Pretty Accurate IMO It irks me to no end for people to call them MADE UP NAMES Realities is .. . *ALL* names were made up at one point the weight of time have not settled on these 'New' names yet Rocket River
[RQUOTER]just plane sad Rocket River[/RQUOTER]Dude, if you want to talk about planes, start your own thread. We're talking about made up names here... it's plain, I know. Seriously, though, I laugh every time I hear one of these made up names. The argument of "every name was made up at one point in time" only says that there is freedom to name your kid whatever the heck you want, and you don't care how "society" will see it in the future. Suit yourself (while I laugh at the name).
He meant she pretended to be "Clint Black." Or maybe she acted like Lewis Black. Yeah, I think that's it.
My child's name will fall into the Lincoln category, not made up but not used in the last several decades. Names go in cycles. My grandparents had names you hardly hear anymore. Velma, Rayford, Newell, & Polly. Hippies named their kids Sun, Moon, River, etc. In 50 years, names that seem normal now will be odd. Top 10 Names for 2005 & times used. 1 Jacob 25347 2 Emily 23544 3 Michael 23324 4 Joshua 22775 5 Matthew 21045 6 Ethan 21039 7 Andrew 20323 8 Emma 19976 9 Daniel 19776 10 Madison 19240
You understand reality and it isn't changing anytime soon. This article explains something that I do not see as something new. Everyone, no matter who you are, prejudges in some way, shape, or form. If you do something to foster these stereotypes, how do you expect the stereotypes to change? Black people should try to break the negative stereotype just as much as non-blacks should try to break the cycle of pre-judging. It is not just on non-blacks to change the way they think and act. What is to explain? You know, I know, and everyone else knows EXACTLY what that means. Now off to the D&D
Not true. Names of people used to mean something. John means "God is merciful" in Hebrew. That translated to different names in different languages. John has 85 variant forms: Anno, Ean, Eian, Eion, Euan, Evan, Ewan, Ewen, Gian, Giannes, Gianni, Giannis, Giannos, Giovanni, Hannes, Hanno, Hans, Hanschen, Hansel, Hansl, Iain, Ian, Ioannes, Ioannis, Ivan, Ivann, Iwan, Jack, Jackie, Jacky, Jan, Jancsi, Janek, Janko, Janne, Janos, Jean, Heanno, Jeannot, Jehan, Jenkin, Jenkins, Jens, Jian, Jianni, Joannes, Joao, Jock, Jocko, Johan, Johanan, Johann, Johannes, John-Carlo, John-Michael, Johnn, Johon, Johnie, Johnnie, Johnny, John-Patrick, John-Paul, Jon, Jona, Jonnie, Jovan, Jovanney, Jovanney, Jovanni, Jovonni, Juan, Juanito, Juwan, Sean, Seann, Shane, Shaughn, Shaun, Shawn, Vanek, Vanko, Vanya, Yanni, Yanno and Zane. The name just wasn't "made up" becuase they liked the sound of it. I think that's what our white culture doesn't get. But then again who cares what they think. Do what you want.
two REAL names (go ahead and pronounce them out loud): Cole Degges Rob Aiken nice...i know Cole and a friend of mine went to highschool with Rob. we always wanted to get those two together for some breakfast. also, i went to middleschool and highschool with a guy named Tripp Wiggins. it's only interesting considering the era (mid-80s) and the chemicals we were ingesting (ecks and ac!d...)
So you are stating that blacks should assimilate by incorporating only names that the general public approves? Should YAO change his name to John or is the practice only relegated to Black folx? The problem with 'Acting Black' is that it generally is the worse stereotype they can find . .. When someone is 'acting black' . . you see them looking like a glorified walking stereotype Something that like 90% of all black people do not act like [See the Wayons Brothers as walking stereotypes in their movies] They not acting like me .. Denzel . .. Oprah . . Maya . . . Why is it . .that those positive ways to act are never seen as 'acting black' ? Rocket River yea yea yea I will start over to the D&D
I never said there wasn't a REASON they were made up but they were made up just the same Rocket River
I completely agree with you on this RR. I cannot stand it when people saying that another is "acting" a certain race. Why? Because all people of the white race do not act the same and all people of the black race do not act the same, in fact no race has a standard way of acting. Unfortunately you hear "acting black" the most. I remember getting into an argument with a girl who said that most black people in the world act the stereotypical black way. I said that is one of the most idiotic statements I have ever heard because you don't even know most black people you just see a few of them then judge the whole race that way. I also remember seeing on a discussion board for the movie "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" on imdb.com somebody made another idiotic statement saying if they went to a different world they would have any idea what type of film to take that could show others what black people are like.
Am I the only one who thinks this isn't a NAME problem but a RACE and CONFORMITY problem? I've always been someone who encouraged people to give their kids normal names, but I'm guessing that traditional or odd names from ANY culture other than what we consider standard American names will run into problems. I can almost bet that Juan or Dieter or Mohammed are going to get their resumes rejected more often than Robert or John both because their names are not typically "American" and because they are different. That's setting aside the weird, made up names like Apple or Moon Unit.
My wife and I were at the zoo about a year ago, and over heard a woman yelling at her daughter...."Sophista!! Get your ass out of that puddle" Sofista? Are you kidding me? The only thing we could figure was that it was short for "sophisticated". We still laugh our heads off from time to time thinking about it. I think a lot of times your name can have a huge impact on what you do with your life. Black people are not the only ones coming up with "clever" names for their kids by the way. I've wanted to puke when I hear some of the names my fellow honkeys are coming up with now days. Brice, Braden, Brady, Lincoln, Apple,....bla bla bla. Could you get any more ridiculous? What some call clever, I just call stupid........But that's my opinion. When naming a child, you have to think about when they're an adult and how they will be viewed as a result. Think people, think!!!!
It is exactly what it is It is as wrong and basic as saying. . you have long hair so you are dismissed from this job you have an Afro, etc The basics is. . you don't look like us. . you don't have one of our names you don't act like us . . . etc Us and Them . . syndrome. . .when you are US you can sit back and laugh and have a good time when you are THEM .. it ain't funny at all Rocket River
As an aside, the WORST name I ever heard was a student my dad had years ago. Her name was Aquinetta. Her mom literally named her after the hair spray she used every day. I **** you not.
I think you nailed it - check out Levitt's essay in Freakonomics. Here is an excerpt. Amusingly, he mentions someone named "****head" pronounced "Shuh-Teed"; and others named "OrangeJello" and "LemonJello", pronounced "o-RON-gelo" and "Le-MON-gelo" repsectively. Weird. Just remembered another woman who named he daughter "temptress". EDIT: More excerpts here
I have known only 2 Grady's One was on Sanford and Son . .the other was the name my white co worker gave his son . . . It is not a bad name. . .. there are no *bad* names one bad reactions to them Rocket River
