hey I like the a coach who is straightforward and honest. I hope he keeps on saying what the sensitive babies don't want to hear - the truth. The truth always hurts, but only for awhile...but thats if you are serious about taking responsibility for your circumstances and digging yourself out of the mess YOU and only YOU created. If players can't handle the truth they will never hold themselves accountable and never change the circumstances they created for themselves.
FYI to critics...JVG record as rockets coach: 0!!!!! Tht man is trying a new system with a team that played an entire different scheme around different players. trying to turn apples to oranges and fast. Right now his team is not motivated yet and peope aren't used to their roles.....yet. As Van Gundy said we will play harder this season and with time and patience this team will gel. With Yao and talent around him, we have a core to work with. Notice I say talent around him, because the truth is perhaps the current team members aren't best for the system, but only time and patience will tell. Also its a new year, new coach, new arena, and hopefully a new team and tradition.....a winning one. ROX 4 LIFE
COUNT ME IN!!!! We need 2 let JVG whip this team into shape & 2 let his system have a chance 2 work, it will take time & patience!!
GO JVG!!!! I think if the players are smart enough to buy in, we can be great! While the preseason losses aren't fun, I've seen better and better use of "the system". It seems like they're starting to understand, just a little bit.
JVG was barely here in H-town, I would give him sometime to adjust, I'm sure everything will come together. I'm right behind JVG!!Straight up!
Count me in... seems like the players needed someone to push and teach them fundamental basketball using tough defense and unselfish passing on the offense... JVG is the man for this job... Larry Brown would have been nice... but JVG seems to fit our team.
Van Gundy is probably use to talking this way because of his NY roots. They culturally are more in your face than what we experience in Texas. I like it. The last thing we need is sugar coating the fact that our team looks like crap!
It's still very early in this process, too early to draw any permanent conclusions. I wanted Brown and was disappointed that we let him slip through our fingers. I also thought JVG's reputation was more a product of the hype and hoopla that surrounds NYC teams. I feared that Les, a fan and follower of NY teams, bought into the hype. Nor was I too happy that he brought a long-time enemy like Patrick Ewing with him. Nonetheless, he is our guy now. So I am striving to be open-minded at the outset. I'm sure he had at least some misperceptions about us, just as I may have about him. Given that, I found it very refreshing that JVG would state the obvious -- that not all Rocket players play hard all the time. This has been clear for several years now but no one connected with the team was willing to say so. Instead, they babied and coddled them, and regularly made excuses. It sickened me. Finally, someone has put his foot down and said "You are not going to play unless you play hard all the time." I'm glad. I hope it works. Still, in the back of my mind, I can't help but wonder if JVG will quit us like he quit the Knicks if things get too tough.
I was one of the biggest pro-Rudy fans on this board. AND WE STILL LOVE YOU RUDY! But, JVG is the new coach and he was my first choice. I think he is perfect for the situation here. It will take TIME, but I believe with a bit more tweeking of personnel and with a strong emphasis on fundamentals within a highly structured game, success will come, but not any time soon. We should start seeing real progress by mid-season.
Count me as one who wanted Larry Brown but is also happy with the style of ball that JVG brings. I love defensive, hard nosed basketball because finesse ball is for weenies. We need to take it to the post with a vengeance and torch them when they double. We need to suck it up on defense and keep people in the 70s and 80s like we did early in Rudy's tenure (Rudyball anyone?). It was ugly, but it got the job done and, need I remind anyone that in all sports, defense wins championships. We are not just building for the playoffs, we are building for a title and I think that we have the cornerstones already. Now, with JVG, we have a coach that won't take any excuses or crap from anyone. He will stress defense and running a structured offense designed to get easy baskets as much as possible. I support Van Gundy!
Are you sure about that? last time I checked, a famous center mopped the floor with an MVP for 45 points in his own house... using something called "finesse". We have that with YAO again. Be careful what you wish for. I agree with you, though, on the rest. (originally stated by Ronnie Courtney, two-time state championship coach of WILLOWRIDGE). AMEN to that.
Actually, I thought that Hakeem was as much power as finesse. He was able to fake people out of their socks, but was also strong enough to bull his way to the hoop against all but the biggest opponents. I see Yao the same way, especially after he bulked up a bit this summer. Besides, I was talking about the guard oriented offense when I talked about being "for weenies" and it seems clear to me that we will be dumping it into the post this year. I was unclear, inside-out is the way we should play, guard oriented is for weenies.
Wrong thread, dude, there is already a JVG haters thread out there. http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66247
