Sports should be color blind but it's not and that's just how things are.

People say oh black qb can't win or they use code words for white guys like he is a hussle player or a smart player those mean he is slow and white.

Back to the topic the Rockets have enjoyed success the Astros have had very little but they are on a nice run the Oilers when I was growing up won alot but never in the playoffs so lets hope the Texans change things!

Call it the way I see it and I can say when the arena referendum came up I saw a mentallity of houston speak out that I was not proud of.

Granted this town does support teams when they are winning regardless of the teams ethnic makeup, but at the same time, I don't see many caucasian fans proud to wear their cowboy hats to rockets games.

The chronicle knows this town good and it when it comes to selling papers they should target as many crowds as possible.

Dare I say they believe only certain groups of people buy their paper due to the records of subscriptions that they sell?

Among the three major franchises, Rockets are third on the depth chart. A distant third. And that's because, if you want to compare attendance in regards to capacity, the Dynamo are more of an attraction than the Rockets.

true, but sports is a "what have you done for me lately" type business. rockets last year were just plain horrible without the big 2.

The Rockets have not made it out of the first round since the 97 season right?

What do people expect? The Rockets are one of the worst basketball teams going back a decade now.

i agree on the notion that football seems to be more popular. i guess americans are more interested in that type of contact sport as opposed to bb.

I'll try to keep this short. When it comes to fan support, enthusiasm and dedication, winning is NOT everything. In Miami, a 9-7 season by the 'Fins generates ten times more talk and support than the Marlins winning the World Series. The only time it doesn't is during the World Series itself and maybe the next week after. In Cleveland, unless LeBron leads them to several championships, there is zero chance people there will care more about the Cavs than the Browns. In Philadelphia, even if the Sixers won three straight championships, it would still be an E-A-G-L-E-S Eagles! town. The Patriots have some longtime, dedicated fans, but the Bosox winning one World Series generated more raw emotions than the Pats over the last 10 years. Boston will be a Sox town until the world ends. I could list other cities but the point is made.

Fans are always attacted to a winner, but the biggest winner in a city doesn't necessarily get the most support. Far from it in many places. The fact is in most cities the local NFL team usually dominates the attention. There are exceptions but they are few. The NFL is riding higher than it ever has while MLB and the NBA are puddling along. Last season's playoffs were a big boost for basketball but the NBA still remains #3.

Sports is primarily all about "what have you done for me lately" with the exception of a few teams that maintain huge fanbases no matter what they do. Houston may be a football town, but it's first and foremeost a fairweather town. You saw it last year with the Texans; people did stop showing up. When the Rockets were successful in the early to mid nineties the Astros were having trouble drawing folks to the dome. Now the Astros have been successful and the Rockets are having a hard time. And if the Texans don't have an upturn I imagine you'll see an attendance drop there too. And I'm as passionate fan as they come; and I was a Rockets fan first. But even my allegiances have changed somewhat as the Astros have become more successful over the years and the Rockets have been losing, and I think more importantly have lost any sense of identity (with such a huge turnover rate of personnel). (I was probably more a baseball fan at heart anyways though). And I really think it's somewhat of a misleading argument to claim the Rockets are the most successful team in town considering it's been a decade since they won and since the Comets, Aeros, UH, Rice, Dynamo and Comets have all technically won more titles than them.

Success doesn't necessarily translate to popularity.

Regardless, you can count on undying Texans coverage throughout the year on SR610. ...and the Texans were aweful.

I guess I've been pretty lucky, being old enough to remember the Oilers coming to Houston, and having a father who was a sports fan, and took me to the games from the start. We never had season tickets, but we went when we were able, and it was a pretty cheap ticket. I remember when the Colt 45's started our MLB franchise, went to the games with Dad in the mosquito pit, Colt Stadium, as the hole was dug for the Dome, and it rose up to blow everyone away. Another cheap ticket. I remember the Rockets coming to town with Elvin Hayes, a guy I'd followed at UH, and great days those were for the basketball program there, and the game in the Dome against John Wooden's great UCLA team and Lew Alcindor, a game that put Houston on the map in the sports world. Elvin only played for one season in Houston, but getting the NBA team was exciting, and Moses eventually made the team pretty good, with some help.

Houston fans are an odd bunch, myself included, I guess. It's true that we get excited about new teams, but if they don't win, eventually, and the novelty wears off, attendance becomes a problem. When a team starts winning, the fans come around, sooner or later. It's hard for me to name a favorite Houston sports team, or was before the Oilers left. I'll always roots for the Astros, but the Rockets have first claim to my loyalty. Maybe not when the Oilers were in town, but they do now.

Does Houston really have a team named the Texans? Why is that? Was McNair confused as to which state the team is located in? You'd think the owner would know. Oh, well... I'll get into them eventually, I'm sure. Maybe when they start winning. ;)

"What have the Texans done for us lately?"

Win or lose, they made my Sundays more enjoyable. I actually have something to look forward to come Monday! Take out last year and give me an answer to that.

they had the #1 pick. anything that creates a sense of excitement will draw fans. rockets were without their stars and didnt play well, traded their top pick, didnt sign anyone worth mentioning, its gonna take wins to draw a crowd this year.

Lately would be last yr though. For the record...the Texans losing is not a enjoyable Sunday. I enjoyed beating the Cowboys....I didnt enjoy all the other losses. Ive HATED our offensive game plans since the beginning. Its been boring and predictable. Rockets > Texans by a big margin

This is an international city. The Rockets COULD own this town. THE big problem with the Rockets is the owner.

Les is a horrible owner. He can't market his team at all. His management team has produced horrible results. The two trophies were handed to him by Hakeem and the Pattersons. All thanks to Hakeem, but no thanks to Les, please sell as soon as possible, you are an embarassment to this city, the sport, the league, and the culture.

No the problem is the team just sux right now.

I think their marketing has been pretty good in recent years from "Be Big" to "Live It. Every Day. Every Game." ....course they could do a better job in drawing fans to TC; Astros totally kick ass in that area.

not in terms of "gameday experience." it's not even close. J.D. Powers & Associates ranked the Texans as the best gameday experience in all of pro sports about 2 years ago. for a team that didn't sniff the playoffs.
