Yep, like "LA's The Place!" Place for riots, place for earthquakes, place for Crips, place for Bloods.....
I (heart) NY Cleveland Rocks etc. the difference is we're captializing on an event big time to do it. but how many other cities can say they've built 3 amazing sports palaces in 4 years...many of the sports media haven't seen them, or their proximity to each other. certainly they haven't in relation to the light rail system. there is "new stuff" to show off...i'd be disappointed if we didn't. you only have so many opportunities to get the kind of media attention a city gets while hosting a super bowl.
RMTex, try driving from the Galleria from 610 to I-10 West to Fry Rd. one of these days. It's an absolute clusterf*ck, bumper to bumper the entire way. It's too bad too, because the Ikea is right in the middle of the mess. MacBeth, Toronto is a very clean city, and has some damn hot Indian chicks. No disputing that. siddiqui, I echo your sentiments about the cheap haircuts. I still get mine cut from Hair By Tony's on HWY6 @ Bellaire when I go home to visit.
Austin is an exception, not the rule. You know that, you used to live here, right? However, take a drive down the road to Round Rock, and you won't see much of a difference from Sugar Land, unfortunately.
Not all the time. My girlfriend works at Fry Rd. and we live near River Oaks/Montrose. Her commute rarely takes her more than 25 minutes each way. Meanwhile, I can't remember the last time I've driven on I35 through downtown Austin without it slowing to a crawl for traffic, no matter what time of day. Mopac's becoming the same way. And I don't anymore. I was more than happy to get out of that overrated town.
I moved out of Austin around 97. The traffic started to get like Houston's except without the loop. It seemed like most of the outskirts on the western side were going to be paved over like the northern side. What happened? How about 2244, I used to ride my bike out there to 71/620. Walmart was about to move into Bee Caves, near that outdoor concert hall.
I started this thread to point out a stupid column mailed in by Simers by picking an easy target and an overly done topic. But I will NOT tolerate bashing of Austin, TX... the greatest city in the world!
You've obviously never lived in New York City. It's a s**thole, albeit an expensive one at that. A-freaking-men. LA sucks. I'm praying Players Inc. moves the NFL Rookie Shoot to Orlando this year (where it used to be held ) after suffering through 2 miserable experiences in LA.
Thats the place. But last time I went, the old guy I always got my hair cut by wasn't there, Instead there was a new young asian guy, and he messed up my hair bad, And the whole time all he was shouting was. "I ****', "I Lo ****", "****, Yu Dauo, I ****" I dont know Why I remember, but I couldnt stop laughing when he was talking. And it is damn true, Toronto has mad hot indian girsl,,,,
Austin's traffic is a beast in and of itself. Luckily, I neither live nor work near downtown. The upper/lower system of I-35 is probably the poorest designed highway I've ever seen. Before they extended the 10 foot onramps, the lower deck was a death trap to anyone who dared enter between Dean Keeton and 51st St. My brother lives on the Upper East Side, and loves it. But he's makes decent money so I guess he can enjoy the city a bit. I live off 360 and Courtyard (near 2222). It's still an excellent place to bike. Strict zoning have kept the area intact, aside from some flashy office buildings. There's no Wal-Mart in Bee Caves, so that must have been rejected. Rule #1 at Tony's. Only let Michael or the first guy on the left cut your hair. Don't let the females or the newbies come near it. You'll end up with a bald fade that ends up at the top of your head, which doesn't really fade at all.
While we're piling on, I figured I'd mention this. He makes this implication that LA residents are somehow too financially scrupulous and wise to spend as much money as Houston did on their own sports arenas. This is in the state that is hemorrhaging so bad that their governor is looking for a secret, third way to make ends meet without cutting expenses or raising taxes. It hurts a bit to be criticized by nice cities, especially ones that are not starting with fantastic geography. San Francisco, for example, is so naturally blessed that their input is not worth much. It is disappointing to trail a place like Chicago who built something out of nothing. But, this is Los Angeles. What a joke.
Indian gilrs? Hmmm...didn't know it was that particular. Toronto is considered to have one of the hottest contingents of women ( Maxim rated it the best party city, and the city with the hottest girls, for example). I attribute a lot of that to it's incredible cultural diversity and intermingling.
I know you were joking, but related; A few years back I saw an A&E thingie on the Top Ten Cities to live in in the US, and I think Madison, Waisc. won, and other cities I remember finishing high up were Annapolis, Md., and Austin, Texas. I'm trying to recall others...I think somehwere in the Pac NW was up there, like Portland or something similar...and I also think that Durham, Chappel Hill or another N.C. college town finished pretty high. Will look it up, if anyone's interested...
Yep. After that, half of California moved to Austin, and it has been a shell of it's former self ever since!
Was wrong... 1. Burlington, VT 2. Chapel Hill, NC 3. Austin, TX 4. Annapolis, MD 5. Madison, WI 6. Charlottesville, VA 7. Eugene, OR 8. Portland, ME 9. Maryville, TN 10. Fort Collins, CO What's Burlington like? Never heard much about it....
This "penis envy" you possess over not attending the University of Texas or living in the city of Austin is starting to get out of hand.
