Chills and goosebumps. That's gotta be every musician's dream -- to hear a crowd singing a song that he/she wrote. I can't imagine that feeling, having 70,000+ people singing YOUR song. Wow. Abe Laboriel, Jr.! I love that man. Tasty, tasty player. Gotta love that. His dad was a badass bass player too (as you undoubtedly know Jeff).
Holy ****! Abe shaved his head? His father is maybe the most well-respected session bass player in the history of LA. Abe Jr. has played on TONS of records and even co-wrote the last kd lang studio record. Listen to the cool drum part on Vanessa Carlton's A Thousand Miles. He's da bomb.
That's Abe Laboriel Jr. He's been touring with Paul for the last few years. Studio master. Amazingly fluid player. He actually studied with Jeff Porcaro and Alex Acuña. If you've ever heard that song A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton, he played on that song and album. I bought the album just for the drumming. As far as halftime is concerned, I loved it. Like someone else said, it wasn't a typical halftime show. It was just a concert. Substance over style. I just wish Hey Jude would have gone on longer. I love it when Paul starts screaming towards the end of that song. Wish he would have extended the outro longer. One of the greatest 'outros' in rock history IMO. Never gets old. Believe it or not, I've always like Paul's Wings material better than his Beatles material. EDIT: Damn, I took too long to submit my post. It's already old news.
Great post. Also anyone interested should check out "Ram," which is essentially Paul's second attempt at replicating "Pet Sounds," and he played nearly every instrument himself.
That's a 15" rack tom, 18" floor tom and a (gasp) 28" bass drum! He says he's a big guy so he needs big drums.
What do you drum guys think of Macca's own playing? I think he's a pretty solid player, he's got a strange style because he plays a right-handed set.
I liked the halftime show. Only two Beatles left, enjoy them live while you can. Ringo's All-Star Band next year?????
Loved the show - the fact that i could hear the words was great - the video platform was cool - and the pyrotechnics was brilliant. i'm only 20, but i somewhat remember some indiana jones halftime show - not sure how old i was - but i thought it was really cool at the time - anybody remember? was it a good one or lame - i mean, a kids perspective of the show can be somewhat skewed when somebody cool like indiana jones gets involved. but hey...it has to be better than michael jackson with all those children, forget what year that was - but now that i think about it...pretty sick stuff.
Yeah, there was a GREAT article on him in Modern Drummer a year or so ago. If you're interested, I'll try to dig up what issue it was in. I can't speak for everyone, but I dig it. Paul actually played drums on quite a few tracks from "The White Album" because Ringo was feeling unloved (and then realized he could be replaced and came back). I know that George Martin, in a book about teh making of "Sgt. Pepper's" said that Paul was easily the best musician in the band and probably could outplay everyone else on their original instruments. I have nothing but love for the Walrus.
paul is an amazing musician. he plays everything and plays it well. didn't he write his own symphony a few years back? i don't know much about bass playing skill or where he ranks as a bass player but he plays some freaking great lines, that i can listen to over and over. "something", "i want you", and "rain", those are my favorites. i loved the half-time show, the whole thing was awesome, especially how the walk ways were made to be one big ass screen. just a great show by a living legend.
One song from McCartney blew away every song last year from P-Dodo's crotchgrab, Kid Schlock's flag-rap, Justin Timberlake's "I wish I had Soul" routine, and Janet Jackson's desperate grab for attention. This is what happens when you book talented musicians as opposed to lip-synching posers.
Well, you couldn't have said that any better. I totally agree. There isn't much left in terms of good music coming out of bands still together. Rock N Roll still has a pulse, but all these stupid, whining punk wannabe bands in addition to all the little popsters are doing their best to end that pulse.
