Eh. Maybe in magnitude of the people who were affected by it. But that's only because the Oilers were a pro team. The UH faithful who saw that are probably still going to therapy... As for the Oilers-Bills game.. I was in a car headed back to Beaumont (which was home) after a week long hunting trip with my family out in some Ranch NW of Victoria. It was a trip that felt like it would take forever, but as the Oilers spanked up on the Bills it made the car ride seem to go faster. The second half of the football game was the longest two hours of my life. I've never heard my mom and dad curse so much.. after the game was over, the entire car was silent for the entire 2 hours left on the way home. It was creepy.
I was 12 at the time and a new fan to "american football" and liked the Oilers alot. My bros and I were so excited at halftime, but were devasted and couldn't believe what was happening. I still follow the Titans, and to me, the "Music City Miracle" was a bit of revenge for that. I still can't believe that happened. That was an awesome sports moment to me.
Funny, I remember EVERY SINGLE detail of that fateful day... I was driving to my girlfriends house to watch the game with her and her family. I missed the whole 1st quarter but I listened on the radio and remember thinking "GOOD GOD, this isn't even fair!" every time we scored. At halftime, up 28-3, I called my Dad and we were both so happy we were yelling "can you believe this???" I said to him that it wasn't over yet, but when we got that INT for a TD at the start of the 3rd quarter to go up 35-3, Russ Small said something like "the lights are on here at Rich Stadium but they might as well be off" or something like that, and I finally relaxed...... The first time the Bills scored to get within 35-10, I had a funny feeling in my stomach. I told myself not to worry. Each time they scored, I just knew we were dead. VERY depressing. When we lined up to kick that FG to go up 41-38, I thought "OK, we're still going to win." Of course, that FG was blocked..... After the game, I was so depressed that I wouldn't even talk to my girlfriend. We went to see Planes Trains and Automobiles at the theatre. To this day, that movie reminds me of that day, even though I love that movie.
For those of you who like to cut yourself, the "choke" is now being shown on ESPN classic until 2:30 pm
Every freaking time time game comes on ESPN classic, I get sick. Just watching Warren Moon play brings back such excitement, then I remember Jack Pardee and I get ill. I have to say a few things: 1 - Don BeBe was out of bounds. He was so out of bounds he got a sip of Gatorade, dried off his face, and then came back in bounds for the most ridiculous catch / no call in NFL history 2 - Andre Reed fumbled. Most forget that he fell down, got back up and started to run, only to have the ball knocked away and the Oilers recovered. The refs whistled the play dead. 3 - OT Pass interference. The last Moon INT was a total joke as ERnest Givens was gang tackled before Moon got the pass off. Anyhow, I have to go back to mourning the Astros not winning an F-in game in the World Series.
Wow, it's been a while. The Oilers did not have to win that game. They were already in the playoffs. If we won that last game, we were facing the Bills. Had we lost that game, we would have played someone else. I even recall their interviewing Givins after the game and asking him if he thought winning the Buffalo game was wise considering they were the defending AFC champs. I recall going to the Firehouse Saloon to watch this game. After the game, we went to a Stop and Go, and I threw everyone's Oiler caps on the roof of the store. Then we went to the Outback pub. Afterwards we went to The Colorado and hooked up with a couple of strippers. Mine was super-hot. We took them to my place and I made out with her. Then we went to Club Some and watched the strippers make out with each other on the dance floor. After that, we went back to their hotel where I had one of the greatest sexual encounters of my life. I would have given that all up just for an Oiler win. That loss single-handedly led to The Oilers moving to Tennessee.
