Low balling isn't the problem. Players go elsewhere for similar or a little bit more money because they don't want to deal with being treated like assets by moneyball and because Houston isn't the greatest city to live in. Much better places out there, much bigger markets. This is just a fact.
This board is awesome! Everyone wanted Asik last year, this year is "I can't believe we are overpaying this trash". Last year "How could Morey let Lin go?", this year "I can't believe we are trying to get Lin"
Hey genius: Name the GMs in the league who DON'T treat players like 'assets'. While you're at it, how about you define exactly what it IS to 'treat players like assets', and why it is so bad.
Hold on. Really? Morey doesn't adopt a 'hardline stance' and offer low contracts because he's just a b*stard - he does it to avoid overpaying. People on this board act like the only consequence of overpaying is that Uncle Les takes home a little less each year, and that's just not true. It has nothing to do with cheapskatery and everything to do with maintaining flexibility to make moves. Signing players to contracts their production doesn't justify is the fastest and most common way to guarantee your team will suffer through years of irrelevance. The alternative to the hardballing you decry is to sign players to contracts they don't deserve.
Exactly -- it's the OFF-season. I'll judge Morey by the roster on opening day, not while he's still shuffling pieces and making deals.
So offering Lin ~$30m wasnt overpaying ??.... sounded like desperation to me. The deal with Dragic was reasonably close to what Phx offered .... If we were talking about significantly more per , I get it but that isnt the case. From what I understand , the real stumbling block was a 4th year that Morey wouldnt give Dragic .... Ive been a big defender of Morey .... but this offseason has been absolutely nuts , I have no clue what he's up to. I see no direction .... they havent gotten better , not sure if they have gotten worse either. I realize the start of the season is still months away .... but that doesnt change the recent events.
