I was thinking of how I would design a large scale game called Ghost Wars that used "live" as a way to create a monstrous inhabitable environment that closely resembled the the world map as we know it.

The world map hosted by X-Box would have plots of open land waiting to be registered to a ghost. When you buy the game you get a plot of land to build, develop, and inhabit. There would also be open plots of land to fight over that would represent Commercial parts of the world like New YorK City, rivers, and monuments.

When you buy the game you build your land/home using the design software and it's rules, design a ghost to inhabit your land and home, create a story and a plot using a friendly tool, and then register your pre determined piece of land online. Your ghost would then enter a sim environment if you choose to play alone. Or...

Your ghost may travel to different parts of the world map by connecting through x-box live and making the voyage, taking planes, taking boats, and walking to other peoples plots of land.

When you arrive at another landowner's haunted house or land, you could play his game and solve the mystery he set up. Finding his ghost would be a large part of the mystery. If you do solve his haunted house you get bonus points toward building your characters abilities. You may purchase ghost horses for example. You may also challenge him to a battle in his house. But even if you win, he still maintains his plot of land. You are listed as having conquered it and gain some character points.

When you travel to comercial plots of land you have the ability to inhabit it or fight for it. So your ghost may want to inhabit the Statue of Liberty. Of course, you may have to fight for that plot of land using x-box live. The Winner gets the land. Commercial pieces of land will have a permanent design and set of rules. But there will be some options available to the owners of such land.

There would also be open plots of land for large scale ghost battles or Civil Wars. The Gettyburgh field would be one of them for example. To limit fighting, these battles will use an online algorithym to determine when they will be scheduled and who can fight. But users can instigate battles by forming alliances and by ghost movement.

Home owning ghosts can never lose their property. But perhaps as these large scale battles occur they may lose chracter points if not partcipating in defense of their homeland. Ghosts who lose will face consequences. The ghosts who win the large scale battle will randomly divided the commercial parts land won.

This is my big brain idea. It seems to me with x-box live it is totally possible. And basically, the users design the game so creating a large world is possible. The Designers profit by providing the architecture and the new rules each year, and updating the options available for a land owner.

There would be up to 2000 possible ghosts selections, but for a small fee, you could send your picture and a design team will create a ghost that looks just like you.

Ok. That's all I've got right now. Who wants to build it?

Here’s my report on the pre-show, show, and postshow. Most of it is just my thoughts that happen to make it out of my head and into the computer. Also, I had a report on who one, but my internet's been acting up, so instead of acting like I'm breaking the news, you can just go here for news on who won what.

Stan Lee was with some women from the Rumble Roses game. I guess he’d doing quite well for himself. ;)

HK-47 accepted an award for KOTOR, using his usual meatbags line

Dave Navarro did a little skit as Jedi Kid, or whatever his name is.

Anna Nicole Smith dressed up as hot game characters. Looks good again, sort of, as opposed to her 6 months ago.

There was a mini-roast of Tony Hawk. Only thing that sells out faster than TH games is Tony Hawk himself. Nick and Jessica have more street cred than him. Preston Lacey, the big dude from Jackass, gave him some love…literally. Ally Mcbeal called and wanted her upper body back.

THUG 2 was shown, looked pretty cool. Pretty much all the Tony Hawk games look cool, IMO, though. Some kind of guy in a wheel chair seems to be a big part of the game.

Stan Lee honors Hideo Kojima with the legend award. (MGS series)

MGS 3 sneak peak. Looks awesome. The clip showed a little more of what looks like the story of it as opposed to most of the forest pics and videos we see, or at least I’ve seen. Looks very interesting.

Look at SC3: looked like some old clips, but some may be new. Looked cool. (popular saying by me)

Glimpse of POP2: Man, another awesome game. Looks cool flipping in the air while slicing up enemies. Looks much “darker” than the 1st one.

Chronic Future performed, probably the only performance I like, but that may be due to the fact I heard them play their song like a thousand times during MVP Baseball.

More talk from HK-47 followed by some performance with lasers and lights and stuff after KOTOR was made GOTY.

Credits rolled with Anna Nicole Smith flashing the crowd.

Frankly, I saw way too much of Dave Navarro’s pierced nipples.

The post-show follows it up. YEA! TechTV people! Too bad they seem a little more robotic than usual, IMO, though they Adam still seems as weird as ever.

Oddworld Stranger was shown. Has Oddworld elements, but not like the others in the series. It is some kind of western in the oddworld world.

Looks like THIS is the real show for new game info.

HL 2 should be done in August, be out in fall. Caught the guys who stole the code with help of gamers.

Adam Sessler talks about Doom 3, but who cares now that is out.

Hideo says MGS 3 could be the last he makes himself, but he may produce others and help, or something like that.

Pyschonauts shown. Still searching for a publisher, was with Microsoft. Supposed to be published for Majesco (???) Early in 2005, is should be out.

Close look at Splinter Cell 3. co-op sounds cool. Play against NPCs, not others. Out by Christmas for PC and XBOX.

Try to get help from Hollywood for next-gen with direction and innovation, etc. Showed Dark Sector, which should be for next-gen consoles. Small developers may have problems.

Halo 2 match for a bet between Adam Sessler and some G4 guy. Adad lost and had to yell “PSP is going to own you” at the Nintendo area. He got beat up.

    Well, that’s about it.

I kind of wrote this during the show, but then changes some pieces but left others, so if it sounds weird, sorry. If you missed it, it looks like it is replaying on G4TechTV. You can probably still catch it some time, probably like how MTV does with their awards shows.

Wow, thanks. I had seen some video and pictures of the PSP and games running on it, but I hadn't seen that one, and that was probably one of the best I've seen. Although I don't understand any Japanese, it looked like it had the PSP's dimensions and weight. Too bad I don't know how mouch 260 grams weighs. I liked how he seemed to demonstrate how the disks are put in and how he showed several things off, including the game. ;)

BTW, since that was showing GT4: Mobile, how about some news about GT4: Mobile?

    http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/08/06/news_6104345.html

Looks like PSP games shouldn't be too expensive since he acted like they couldn't have big budgets for the games and expect much profit at the price for the games. Considering they look to be around the PS2's graphic quality, that should be pretty nice.

Kind of funny that he said it would be a port considering I remember Sony saying they didn't want any direct ports for the PSP, wanting some originality in their PSP games. But I guess when the GT guys call and say they want to make GT4 for the PSP, Sony decided to let that one slide. :)

On the PSP's graphics, there are several pictures on the internet that show how it looks. I saw one comparing Armored Core for the PS2 and then on the PSP and they were indistinguishable. If you want to see some pictures, you can go
here for some pictures on certain PSP games. Here's an example, although I'm sure the video already probably showed how great the graphics are:

Is GTA:SA coming out on Xbox anytime? My friend plays his roommates Xbox and I have a PS2, though I think my buddy will break down and buy a PS2 if GTA isn't coming out on Xbox anytime soon (seeing that he is also a die-hard Gran Turismo fan).

I just don't want him always borrowing my PS2

And as a sidenote, I've never really played GTA:VC. Just little bits from when my roommates played it. I'm def gonna have to pick it up as a lil diversion when I get back to college until GTA:SA comes out.

I think my friends and I may just fail out of school this semester! Madden, GTA, Metal Gear3, Halo2, and GT4 all coming out this semester...jeeesus! - Having my buddies' house already filled with my 4 friends that live there + myself + Halo2 = no time for homework :D

Well, like lots of people I'm eagerly awaiting Halo 2 on November 9th (and still trying to figure out ilovebees.com). Also looking out for Fable and KotOR 2: The Sith Lords (it's about time XBOX got some hopefully good RPGs).

Mainly though right now is I got in on the beta for Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War. There are a few bugs that I've sent in (probably having to do with driver compatibility) but right now the game is AWESOME! If you've played Warhammer 40K tabletop before you know what it's like. DoW is a RTS game involving the Space Marines (the "good guys" if you will) Chaos Marines (take a guess who they are), orks (big green orcs with guns) and Eldar (think "Space Elves"). Each race has different strengths, weaknesses, and upgrades. So far I love it and await the final version on September 16 (as of right now anyway).

BTW DaDa, while I have our resident game design expert here, what do game designers look for most in an open beta test? Gameplay errors, graphics glitches, etc. are all important I know but what are they most concerned about? Just wondering what I should look for with special interest.

Everything I've seen says GTA:SA will be a PS2 exclusive. I think Rockstar just had GTA:3 and VC released on the XBOX because of a loophole in their contract with Sony, but I think Sony fixed that now. Even if they didn't, it would probably be similiar in the time frame and GTA:SA probably wouldn't come out until mid-to-late next year, IMO, which could possibly very soon to the lauch of the successor of the XBOX. So I guess he'll probably have to get his own PS2. :)

Here's a rather long report where some people at IGN rate the PSP and DS based on what is known right now.

    1. Riddick is good - certainly some of the best looking graphics on the XBOX - but to me it got a little bland. Such a solid engine, I realized, is wasted on nothing but prison-esque landscapes. A shame.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad game...but I think a lot of its praise came from the fact that everyone went in expecting absolute crap.

    2. RE4 was never scheduled for PS2, I don't think. At least not anytime in the last 2 years. Just Gamecube.

    And it looks friggin' awesome.

    3. Doom 3 is simply incredible. Far Cry was my shooter of the year before this, but now slips to second. (And probably 3rd once HL2 comes out). I understand the 'waiting for the console version', completely, but it makes me sad that some people won't get to see games like this the way they are intended; in the glory of a good PC.

    It's just that good.

    4. Don't expect GTA:SA on the XBOX anytime soon, if at all. It's definitely PS2 exclusive for the time being.

    5. GOOD GAMES OUT NOW YOU MAY HAVE OVERLOOKED:

The already mentioned PSI OPS for both PS2 and XBOX
TALES OF SYMPHONIA for Gamecube, an excellent RPG

    I love this thread. :D

Yeah, I decided to get Doom 3 the other day, although I was worried if how well it would run on my system. It ran ok though, and with some tweaks I found online, I went from like averaging 16-20 FPS in the FPS demo to at least 30 FPS, although usually a little more. (running pretty much on Medium although I wanted 1024 x 768) I don't play it as much as I should because I'm not good at playing games that scare the crap out of you, so I only really play it when I am in the right mood. I think eventually I reach a poing where I be playing it nonstop.

On TOS, I saw it was on the GC and was really jealous since I loved playing the series on the PS1. Luckily for me, they are going to release it for the PS2 as well as on the PSP. I also heard they are making another one called Tales of Rebirth for the PS2 also. I'm pretty happy about that. Although I will still have to be jealous about RE4...man does that look awesome.

I read those a couple days and it is interesting, but a lot of it should be taken with a grain of salt. I'm barely learning about all the terminology and components involved with consoles, but other guys who live for this stuff said those guys didn't know what they were talking about. A lot of errors in their works, not to mention they're XBOX fanboys which comes across in their reports. (EX:this seems way too low, or something like that) Of course, go to a PS3 or Revolution fansite and read reports about next-gen and you'll see a little fanboyism (is that a word) as well.

It is a good read if you have no idea about the next-gen consoles though. It just has some problems here and there.

I probably should have put this sooner, since I saw it a few days ago, but better late than never.

I present to you the logo for the PS3:

Hmm...looks familiar. Yeah, it pretty much is the PS2 logo with the 2 replaced with a 3. This was found at a site for trademarks and stuff. Looks like they filed it all way back in December of 1999 and it got approved last month.

I guess they went with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" route. Seeing as how the PS2 logo is nice, as is the also strangely familiar logos of the PSP and PSX, this isn't too bad of an idea, although I'm sure some of us wanted something new. It could still be in different colors since this was black and white.

Here's a link to the site it is found on where you can read all about it:

Shenmue Online has been announced for the PC. I doubt this gets released outside of Korea and Japan, I just can't see this MMORPG being popular in the states.

I can of want to bring the Blu-ray/HD-DVD talk into here, although what I'm about to say is sort of off-topic. (going off-topic in my own thread...and a general thread at that). I guess I could say Blu-ray will be in PS3, so it is related to gaming. :p

Well anyways, something occurred to me today while I was thinking about the amount of space Blu-ray could use and how to utilize it. I realized that with at least 25 GB per disc, and possibly 200 GB, they may be able to fit the season's of sports teams on these discs along with maybe a few special features. I'd probably expect it to be more possible with the NFL with its 16 games plus playoffs as opposed to the amount of games in the NBA, NHL, and of course, MLB. I also don't know exactly how much a game would take up on a disc. However, it is MUCH more possible with this technology than it was with DVD or with HD-DVD, IMO. Imagine that after a month into the offseason, the NFL releases BR discs for each team's full season. I know I would enjoy watching every play, frame by frame, checking out things I missed when I originally watched the game. Watching tendencies that players have and things they are good at and not good at. Then watching how it changes game to game. And of course, watching frame by frame of terrible calls that the referees made/missed. This is just if they recorded onto the discs exactly as it was on the TV. They could always add some different camera angles, interviews, extra commentary on the season, etc.

For HDTV owners, they could put those games that were in HDTV put them on a disc, but that may be difficult to do for every team since there are not the same amount for each team and recording in HDTV takes up much more than a normal game. Maybe they could also release a special HDTV disc that has all the games that season that was recorded in HDTV. I'm not all that familiar with it since I don't have one, so there are maybe other possibilities as well.

Of course, this would be AWESOME with the NBA. Imagine a guy saying, "When did T-Mac ever play defense?" Well, you could bust out you Houston Rocket's BR season disc and check out the game against the Lakers where for the 20 minutes and 24 seconds that T-Mac guarded Kobe, he shot 3-14 and got blocked twice, and Kobe could not guard the pick and roll between TMac and Yao when they ran in 9 times in the 4th quarter. And then you quickly switch to the playoff game where Yao battled Shaq in the Finals, using his lower body to get great position during the 1st quarter with 5:30 to go and he dunked on Shaq. Armchair quarterbacks/coaches would be dreaming to have the ability to do this.

Just something to talk about...and um...you could do this by sticking the disc in your PS3, which is a GAMING console....so...I'm on-topic.:D

i was gonna say that the soundtrack to "GTA: VC" was one of the best elements of the game... it enhanced gameplay a lot. that "japanese boy" song is so catchy. not sure if San Andreas <-- is that right? i don't remember, but anyway, i hope the next one can duplicate the success of VC.

I believe it's been announced (or suggested) that the soundtrack for GTA:SA is going to consist of early 90's grunge rock and gangsta rap. Really depends on how well they do in getting those licenses.

If you're talking about suceeding in the soundtrack part, I believe Rockstar is trying hard to make this soundtrack as well. This time, they are suppose to put in popular early-90's music since that is when the game takes place. I think I saw something about some of the music in the game, but I seemed to have forgotten about it. All I can remember is some rumor about Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre being on there and I think it was confirmed. I'm guessing they'll do a good job with the soundtrack though.

Just going to do a little news catch-up post.

The following is an excerpt from OPM magazine, I believe, and it talks about developers impressions on the PSP.
Here's a picture from it that shows the PSP's analog stick...though that's not quite what it is.

Now time for news from Square-Enix.

    And also related to Square-Enix...

Hopefully, this means more great RPGs from Square-Enix and it sounds like Mist Walker could produce some nice games since they seem to focus on creativity. Good for us. :)

    Now for some...interesting news

Pretty interesting move. For those that don't know, Cell, which will be used in the PS3, is also supposed to be put into TVs as well as other things. It seems like this may be a move to get closer to making that happening. The PS2 CPU is pretty powerful though. I wonder how much greater of a difference it will make.

In a surprising move, Microsoft said they wouldn't make any DS games. HUGE SURPRISE! :D

One of the games I'm keeping an eye out on, Xenosaga Ep. II, now has a release date of February 2005. I like this series, but they sure seem to take a while getting it here. It seems we'll be on console two or three generations from now by the time they get to Episode 6.

Probably more news out there, but this is probably enough for one post. :p
