Maxine Waters tasked with investigating disgraced FTX founder, but unearthed video throws up red flags

The House Financial Services Committee announced Wednesday that it will hold a hearing next month to dig into the catastrophic collapse of crypto exchange FTX and the company’s founder, former billionaire soy boy, Sam Bankman-Fried, known simply as “SBF,” will be hauled before Congress.

As the chairwoman of that committee, it falls to Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) to lead the investigation with Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.).

Now, to be fair, anytime Waters opens her mouth, it’s likely that controversy will soon follow, but when video of the aging Rep. blowing a kiss to the guy she’s meant to investigate resurfaces, it’s enough to send Twitter into a full-scale meltdown.

In December 2021, Waters called a hearing in which the chief executives of six cryptocurrency companies gave testimony before her committee. Among them was SBF, and it appears that she and the FTX founder hit it off.

Following the five-hour event, SBF took to Twitter and thanked both Waters and Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) for the “productive” meeting.

“I came in expecting some hostility and grandstanding, but instead found the discussion to be by and large productive and helpful,” he said. “I’m excited to keep engaging with lawmakers and regulators to refine the regulatory landscape.”

As independent journalist Jordan Schachtel noted, Waters and McHenry “are the two lawmakers responsible for the investigation.”

Schachtel posted pictures of Waters and SBF posing together, showing how chummy things apparently got in December.

That air kiss — the one that is now calling into question Waters’ ability to impartially investigate the busted scam artist — came the same day as SBF’s gushing gratitude.

    “Incredible,” Schachtel tweeted.

And that’s about the kindest word Twitter has for the aging lawmaker.

“Maxine Waters chairing the investigation into FTX is like Eric Swalwell chairing an investigation into Chinese spies,” one user tweeted.

“PUTTING MAXINE WATERS IN CHARGE OF THE FTX INVESTIGATION IS LIKE PUTTING A FOX IN CHARGE OF THE HEN HOUSE. SHE WILL TRY TO COVER UP THE KICKBACKS TO CONGRESS FROM FTX,” another exclaimed in all caps.

“Maxine Waters is chairing the investigation into FTX,” said a third. “This makes as much sense as Katie Hobbs presiding over the vote counting in her own race for governor.”

All tweets aside, to hear Waters tell it, she’s really, really upset over SBF’s malfeasance, despite the millions he donated to the Democrat Party.

“The fall of FTX has posed tremendous harm to over one million users, many of whom were everyday people who invested their hard-earned savings into the FTX cryptocurrency exchange, only to watch it all disappear within a matter of seconds,” she said, according to The Hill. “Unfortunately, this event is just one out of many examples of cryptocurrency platforms that have collapsed just this past year.”

LOL...he gave basically the same amount of money to Republicans and Democrats. Money in the "light" was to Democrats, the "Dark" money was to Republicans. LOL.

That's what he claims (re: Republicans). Given that he is one of the worst fraudsters the world has ever seen (and all the money he so "generously" handed out was basically stolen), what makes his statement credible?

It's not just what he said. It's in the indictment that the DOJ unsealed today. He used bogus corporations and crypto to funnel money to republican super pacs because by his own words was "afraid of the media knowing he donated to Republicans and would hurt his good boy reputation."

It's amazing how dumb so many Maga folks are. Like literally get off the internet and go do some reading. All you right wingers want to do is gin up baseless conspiracies. Get a damn life seriously.

The man bamboozled the whole crypto scene with lie after lie after lie. Like literally everything he says is a lie. And you still want to believe him.
There is no conspiracy. The guy just lies about everything and if he can't back it up, it's best to ignore it. Otherwise people get caught in stupid debates about him donating to Republicans. Let the courts do their work and discover the best truth that can be found with this clown.
This is really a stupid conversation.

Agreed. People are so hung up on the minute details of news cycles that they cling onto the emotional bits grooved deep in their minds through focused media conditioning/cognitive chunking (culture wars->partisan scorekeeping->absolute good vs absolute evil...no compromises!) and the real damaging details flow out of their heads like a sieve.

For example, the Twitter Files was tantamount to a massive leak in what's still a black box of a global social networking corporation (moderation policy run more by flawed humans than cold analytical machines than industry wide claims by PR), but if something like the Panama Papers doesn't move the needle, then people are more prone to go all or nothing on the topic.

Doesn't matter if you have a liberal or conservative mind. No one is immune to it but if you're aware of it, it does open a little crack from time to time.
