As a Frenchman, I'd like to give France as much credit as possible, but I have to point out that even 'free' France was occupied by 1943. Nevermind the fact that 'free' France was essentially defeated by Germany and allowed to operate itself before then for the convenience of the Nazis. WWII was an out-and-out loss (and probably the best thing that could have happened for France, but that's a different subject).
