It's early, but David Brooks is a front-runner for embarrassing Twitter take of the month, non Trumpist division

Remember he gets paid 7 figures a year to comment on this type of thing by the Times

I finally listened to what Romney said about why he voted the way he did.

    Good **** Mitt.

Good article. Informative. Unbiased. With quotes.

Ken Starr is known to be a partisan hack. Alexander using Starr's argument that impeachment was partisan and hence invalid is ironic and completely illogical. House is the type of place that votes on party lines because their terms are much shorter and they don't form bi-partisan "gangs" there. Senate is where parties are actually able to hash out bipartisan solutions. Alexander was the linchpin of that bipartisan solution it sounds like. In the end the impeachment was bi-partisan thanks to Romney. (Romney is as much a democrat as Trump is. He is from Utah... @Os Trigonum )

I hope Dems get an uber majority in Congress and presidency and pass an amendment that clearly makes this type of abuse of power an impeachable offense. The best type of censure to these Senators who were swayed by a simple argument of a longer trial, which they were too lazy to do and at the same time unwilling to stop their conference from calling Bidens. They had to avoid the wrath of their leader after all. Bidens had nothing to do with the charges at hand and if Senators wanted to make a reality show out of the trial, that's fine still. It's better than what we have now:

All 100 senators believing that there was quid-pro-quo and only GOP thinking it's not a clear cut abuse of power and delegating the decision to the electorate in 10 months - an ample time for more potential abuses of power. What kind of a democracy is this, where there is a proved effort to disenfranchise half the country and yet no one is punished for it? Nixon would be pretty jealous of Trump right about now.

This is all they can dig up on Romney? That he lost an election to incumbent Barack Obama? LOL at the tense scary music in that silly video... I kept waiting for dramatic hamster to make an appearance.

Trump can do anything he wants, haven't you heard? He can just name-call and insult anyone who isn't in lockstep with everything he says and does and that will keep them all in line. He can even insult their wives. And fathers. They'll still do whatever he wants.

Man, I wish we had more critical thinkers on the Republican side like Mitt Romney. #MyWriteInVote

Trump shouldnt be complaining about a bipartisan vote resulting in his acquittal.

One thing I want to note is that the key defense the Trump lawyers gave in the obstruction article is that the House Dems didn’t wait for the courts to decide on subpoena defiance.

I think this is a clear opening for the Dems to call their bluff and subpoena Mulveany, Bolton, Pompeo/state dept. etc and keep the investigation open until the election.

If the media questions them then they can just refer to the advice of Trumps own counsel.

I also think they should leave open the possibility of more articles. Should they send more... probably not unless something egregious pops up that the Republicans just can’t defend, but the status publicly should be that the House cannot close the investigation until they are able to get either court decisions on docs and witnesses being withheld or they get access to do their due diligence in making sure more criminality is not being hidden.

I also wonder about SCOTUS decisions on Trump vs House cases that’ll come up in the coming weeks. Roberts has to be concerned about his credibility and I expect him to know that decisions to rubber stamp further in Trumps favor will taint the court forever if it’s not already there.

This is some good dealmaking by the GOP Senate:

Listen, stop saying that to make our lives easier, and instead act like an unhinged despot who is immune from any accountability

And in return, you get to be an unhinged despot who is immune from any accountability

    deal?

Look at how the GOP treats Romney and compare it to how the DNC treats people like Sinema and Manchin...

It's always rich hearing they call Democrats partisan when they try to expel anyone that doesn't vote with them.

Mitt votes like 85% (IIRC) with Trump and I guess that just isn't high enough.

What is the Supreme Court going to do if it issues judgments that Trump refuses to abide by? Ask the Senate to impeach? This remedy is foreclosed at least until January, but probably forever with Trump.

The fix is already in. This would only damage what remains of the SCT's credibility further, Roberts knows this.

Don't expect John Roberts to do anything but sit idly by while Rule of Law crumbles further and he "protects" his treasured institution. He either doesn't see what is happening or doesn't care. Hoping I'm wrong but probably not.

Yep. Not that we needed any more evidence of angry lawless despotism.

The RNC convention this summer is going to look a whole lot like an angry dictator’s rally and not very much like a big tent political gathering. Hopefully some people more fully open their eyes when they see it.
