How a duly elected government official acts doesn’t matter. Only the will of the people (technically the EC) do.

There would have been no impeachment if there was no 2018 election. Blame the will of the people in 2018.

Trump won WV by 40 points. He would not have survived and is not doing the right thing but the save me thing. He is taking what he think is a compromised middle ground to survive a dem challenge and winning re-election based on the hope that some GOP senators already went this route - saying trump did what he was impeached for but not voting for witness and will be voting for acquittal.

I don't remember any specific date clauses in the Constitution that govern when a President can be impeached...or when they can nominate Supreme Court Justices for that matter (speaking of ACTUALLY subverting the will of the voters). The government doesn't shut down in the 4th year of a presidency.

We are witnessing Senators acting for themselves and not as impartial jurors. Imagine if jurors in the US court systems risk losing their jobs based on how they voted in deliberation. With polarization at max and facts as illegitimate, the impeachment trial by the Senate is broken. It is essentially a reflection of the most current will of the people in each States and not of upholding their oath to support and defend the Constitution.

How is this helpful to Trump?

I don't understand the logic, he gets off either way.

I disagree and i hate Trump, you can say he did something wrong and not think Impeachment is the right move, I don't agree but its a logical argument.

Also the fact that we all know he will not get impeached so censure is something better than nothing. IMO.

Do you think a more liberal democrat would win over him?

Because censure won't happen either, so he gets to spin that. And the people who want to vote to acquit can say they supported censure (knowing it won't pass), so they get an easy out.

It's not hard to be more liberal than him - he is a conservative in many ways.

Doug Jones will vote to convict. That leaves Joe Manchin and possibly Kysten Sinema as the two possible acquit votes from "Democrats."

So Collins took in a large donation just before the trial - seems dirty money is buying her vote.
