The Beatles used quite a few different instruments. I think they'd have lots of firsts like first Rock song to use violins.
The first Heavy Metal band I remember is the MC5 in 1968, the were contemporaries of The Stooges, both from Detroit and Blue Cheer from Cali. Check em out. (that's right, Heavy Metal before you were even born)
Damn DD, everytime there is a thread on rap or the hip-hop culture you always post in it and then you go and post this. You must know the hip-hop culture very well?
I love reading about the history of hip-hop. A lot of it stems from the fact I grew up in neighborhoods right about when we were moving from playing Michael Jackson's old school stuff like "Off the Wall" album and into Sugar Hill Gang. I still remember hearing that song for the first time and tripping out... the full version seemed like the hip hop version of Don McLean's "American Pie" - it just kept going and going and going. lol. I was never into the stuff like The Roots (except for Rahzel - ridiculous beatboxing skills), Tribe (well, I sort of was), De La Soul, etc., but the old school stuff like LL Cool J, Whodini, Run DMC, Ice T, Public Enemy, NWA, etc. was stuff we'd play all day long and in our cars. It just brings back memories of the old neighborhood... As a tribute to old school beatboxing : Kenny Muhammad aka "The Human Orchestra" If you wait about a minute or two into it, you see him beatboxing with.... The first rap song had to be... "The Devil went down to Georgia" by the Charlie Daniels Band. ...chicken in the bread pan picking out dough.
Seriously, that song has always been a favorite of mine because I used to piss people off by saying, "You can call it country, but that's hillbilly rap music". Love that song. And to be honest, I think it came out a few months before Sugar Hill Gang, but I'm not sure...

Not technically "rap" but Gil Scot Heron had some pretty incendiary poetry with musical backing in his day. Frank Zappa had this rap on his "Freak Out" album in 1965 that is still relevant today 40 years later.
