Forgetting mystic quest, chocobo dungeon, ehrgeiz, and saga games? I do agree we got a lil spoiled with all the quality that came out of the ps period. I still haven't been dissappointed by a numbered ff yet, though I haven't played 2, 3 or 11(never will play that). For now and in the future. FF5, FF6, FF3, DragonQuest Heroes: Rocket Slime, Kingdom hearts: chain of memories. Then there's 5 DQ games new to the US, FFTA2 and the FF4 remake. And that's just Squeenix games. There's also the N games, capcom stuff, and a new Tales game in the works.
I took a look at their releases, and I guess you're right. It's just that with the passage of time, I tend to forget a lot of titles that weren't truly memorable. Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics were two games I played for a few hours before putting them away until I found buyers. Never could get into them, but I do remember them being very favorably thought of. Parasite Eve I should've remembered, since I did through the whole game. Yeah, it's sad to see Square becoming much less "adventurous" in terms of game development, and instead trying to milk money with ports and "sequels" like FFX-2. I think it started with the whole FF:Spirit Within debacle. Heard that lost Square a ton of money. After that, their devotion of resources towards titles that start with FF became almost total. But I do have favorable impression of the new Enix games.
Watching the FF6 episode totally FREAKED ME OUT. It's like going back to a town I lived in but haven't been back in a more than a decade.... I'm getting OLD! OLD! AHHHHHHH!!!!
As I said, there was a good chance I'd like any Square game, although it wasn't 100%. Those were probably by far the worse games to come out of Square during the 90s, and I actually still found a little bit of enjoyment in some of those games. Maybe because I was the target audience for Mystic Quest when it came out though. Yeah, I haven't been disappointed either. Also, haven't played 2 or 3 IIRC, nor will I ever play 11. Most of those games you listed at first are GBA games, aren't they? I think just FF3 and Rocket Slime are DS games, and they got average-to-above-average reviews IIRC. The future lineup you mentioned looks nice though, as I said earlier. I just thought it was strange to cite Square-Enix's strong support of the DS (and not GBA) using released games as a reason to buy a DS. As you sort of pointed out, I'd rather get one based on some of the great games already released by other publishers. Of course, I guess if you never had a GBA, Square-Enix's GBA releases would also be a good reason to get a DS. Yeah, I think I saw something about them losing well over $100M with the film. For reference, that could have funded maybe 5 360/PS3 games of pretty high quality (not even going to try to say how many PS2 games they could have made). Along with the normal reasons for shying away from creating great new IPs, this definitely didn't help.
*shrug*, I loved Advent Children and FF12, which are two of the most recent Final Fantasies they've done
I have positive memories of the game since it was the one of the first FF games I played. I can't remember if I played it before FF4 or not, but I played them around the same time...I thought they were directly related since I saw "Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest" and "Final Fantasy II" right next to each other in the game store (didn't play the original FF until much later). Anyway, I thought most of my positive memories about the game were due to nostalgia, but maybe some of it was genuine as well (I really enjoyed the soundtrack too, for example).

FYI, Gametrailers never got permission from Square to do this (though they tried), and they did have to skip over some things to avoid complications.
Yeah... nice how they handled the whole Spoiler "death of Aerith". FF7 was pretty great. I would still love to go back and play that game again.
The Final Fantasy series is definitely my favorite of all time. I started with #1, moved on to #2 (these are the #'s in the US), and pretty much stopped at 3. I played Mystic Quest a bit, but didn't get into it as much as these others. I tried to get into 7 and Tactics but it was just too much graphic for me, I guess I'm old school. I actually took #1 to work and installed Nesticle on my cpu and beat it with 4 white mages. Yes I had a lot of time on my hands! Pugs
Everytime I watch these types of videos (Gametrailers, AVGN, Video game retrospectives, etc) I'm amazed at just how much music they use from Overclocked Remix. Man that site has come a long way.
Good video, bring back a lot of memories. FF7 is easily my favorite game of all-time and the music is the best. Hey RC, have you ever heard any of the FF Piano music? You should check it out if you haven't, some good stuff...
I've heard versions of FF music on the piano, although I don't think I've heard any of the songs from the various Piano Collections albums (which is what I'm assuming you were referring to). I'll definitely try to check it out in the future.
I acknowledge you as an expert on gaming. And I'm a huge fan of the FF series. Which leads me to ask? Which one was your favorite?
Surprising answer. I enjoyed the hell out of FF7, but found FF6 lacking, at least in story-line. I found FF3 (the japan version) to be much more intriguing than any of the others. Of course, I'm on FF VIII, now, so I've not been trough the entire montage, but I do enjoy them.
I did enjoy the storyline of FF7 more than FF6, although I do feel as though the storyline of FF6 is better than most FF games (partly because it seems more "realistic" if that makes sense). What I did enjoy about FF6 though was the amount of character development they put into the game. As the FF6 segment from the earlier video showed, each character had at least one part of the game dedicated to fleshing out their individual storyline (except for the 3 optional characters of course), although I can't remember if each of them were mandatory or just optional (thinking a lot of it was optional since most/all of Shadow's storyline required sleeping at Inns with him in the party...hell, his whole storyline can't even be experienced in one playthrough IIRC). This made it very easy for me to care a lot about most of the characters in the game. In FF7, while I did care a lot about Cloud, Aerith, Sephiroth (had to care enough about them for that one scene to have any impact), and, to a degree, Tifa, I didn't particularly care for Barret, Cid, Cait Sith, Red XIII, Vincent, or Yuffie (although the last two were secret characters IIRC, so that is somewhat understandable). I also enjoyed the music in FF6 a bit more than FF7, and, for some reason, the music in a game usually has a large influence in how I rate a game. My all-time favorite games are also the games with the best soundtracks IMO.
A bit off topic, but I just wanted to pop in and say that it is ridiculous and hypocritical for somebody to hate on the Harry Potter series (it's for kids... you're a loser... blah blah, etc..) and at the same time be a fan of Final Fantasy. That is all. Personally, I am a big fan of both.
One word: Quidditch, or whatever the hell it was. It made the entire series seem r****ded. I still haven't seen any of the LOTR seies due to how r****ded I found the first Harry Potter movie.
