No one in Germany thought that Hitler would take over either, he had less than 35% support, same as Trump.

Hitler had a hardcore base of support like Trump and like Trump had a large group of more apathetic mostly small business owners fearing communism who didn't care for the esoteric Nazi race science stuff but wasn't a deal breaker for them. We have a lot of posters here who fit that later mold.

I've seen the same comments listed here after Trump's first election and even made many of them in frustration. I can't say much was learned though it helped with the coping I guess.

Nook's point about no widespread disaster like the depression is interesting. During the GFC, we saw unseen levels of unemployment and homelessness. Bipartisan outrage against the culprits was at all time highs. Obama ran up the worst budget deficits at the time by ramping up unemployment benefits and also one other thing. Bush rolled out a newfangled tool where you could now receive food stamps on a credit card. 1 in 4 Americans requested SNAP assistance at the height of GFC. It was the same proportion to Americans lining up for bread lines during the depression.

The pain was silently held by individuals and families. Ccould you imagine if people were lined up for bread like an old Black Friday event? Wouldn't that get people talking and relating to each other's pain without a 256 character limit designed for attention or outrage seeking?

There was an event that brought people together though, Occupy Wallstreet. Was there really support for it by the Obama admin or was it silently sandbagged to make it implode under it's own weight? Maybe if there were breadlines across every city in the nation, the outcome would've been different and we'd have more crooks in jail.

That's one story of how digitization has abstracted our human experience and dulled our capacity to bond.

There's other unlearned lessons for the cope wagon, but I'm hungry and no one has time to read a book

Obviously, the Dems did a horrible job in messaging, even though I think what they said was true, it didn't resonate with the middle class. It is so ironic that trump was able to use the "government is corrupt and it's the fault of the libs", line to his base and they bought it yet they have a grifter now in charge. The public tuned out the rhetoric of, "trump is Hitler and will wreck Democracy" even though its happening in front of their eyes. As sick as trump is, Joe Six Pack sees him as a savior to them and will simply never waver, because if they do they have to admit they were hoodwinked.

I do appreciate what Fetterman said recently, we can't freak out every time trump does something, after a while that's all we do. James Carville had good advice and said something like, "let trump punch himself out" and IF there is havoc then the right will have to own it. The Dems need to focus on the Economy which is the main driver, voters who can't afford things will vote for the party that is not inflicting the daily pain and if I was a betting man I would say we have a rough few months and then we will look at a recession, only then or something similar will people really focus on what's going on. I see what's happening with musk and I am devastated by the carnage, but the people voted for trump and we have to sit back and watch it unfold in real time. Most voters don't care right now because it's not directly affecting them, when the average person feels the pain they will wake up..........but most don't care about Ukraine or any other country needing our help, its a "what have you done for ME" mentality. The American voters have changed and its not like when my grandpa has Civic pride and Pride in the USA as being the big brother who would not let allies be bullied

There is a lot of truth in that. It wasn't that long ago in the south when sheriffs, police, and the law were right there under those white hoods with the rest of the cross burners. Their like minded kids are still alive and are raising like minded kids with hate spewing mindsets now too, without the hoods.
