How about the good ole APPLES AND ORANGES The Struggle of Black People and The Sruggle of Homosexuals have very little in common and as far as degrees .. . it is the difference between a kitchen burning and a Volcano Rocket River
Very little in common? How so? Both have been killed, barred from aspects of society, vilified, assosciated with negative imagery, etc. Merely practicing homosexuality was punishable by death in most Judeo-Christian nations for well over a thousand years. Being homosexual was a punishable offense in this country long after it was illegal to be black. The word 'gay' is synonomous to many with being 'bad' or 'wrong' when there are no commonly used expressions which denote racial distinction as equivalent with negativity.
How many times in the history of mankind have 2 gay people had intercourse where the ultimate purpose is to express their love for each other? And how is that different from an infertile couple making love who happen to be married? It really amazes me how you start these threads and then can act "surprised" by the reaction. Hey, it's a change of pace from discussing exactly how Bush qualifies as the Worst President in American History. Whatever floats your boat.
What's the point of gay marriages? You definitely won't have a child, so you don't have to worry about a (I don't know how else to say this) "b*stard" child. So why not just do whatever you want and avoid the controversy and NOT get married? Unless you WANT controversy, in which case your motive for getting married would have to be questioned right? Also, I've always wondered what gays have to say about their religion. I'm sure the majority practice some sort of religion, whatever it may be, and I'm sure Christianity and Islam forbid homosexuality, and while I'm not sure about Juddaism, I think they do too. How does all this work into the picture?
(1) Mrs. B-Bob and I do not plan to have kids at all, so there ya go. Why any interest in marriage? Rights, rights, and rights, and protections... a million bits of paper work versus one more powerful piece of paperwork, to say nothing of being "legitimized" and recognized by the society around you. (2) The religion question is interesting. Plenty of Christian congregations welcome homosexual members and even homosexual couples. At least that's true in some cities. If you definied relationships by the section of the Bible that supposedly forbids homosexual sex, you would have to kill all divorced people and you would have to marry your brother's widow if he died, and give her children -- otherwise, suffer the penalty of losing one shoe! Understandably, some congregations take certain phrases in the Bible and try to see the teachings of Christ in a larger context. I'm not saying that's right, but I'm saying it exists.
Your a teacher, right? What grade? Not a comment on your post, merely that you have previously reminded me a bit of my friend, who is a teacher, and who, as previously mentioned, is married without intending on children. I seem to recall you're a secondary teacher, though, and my friend teaches 4th and 5th.
13-17. And the 18th or 19th in my research lab. Kudos to your friend, by the way, in terms of profession. K-12 teachers are incredibly brave, and they can truly do some good. I can help at times, but I don't think us college types have nearly the same positive influence. edit: my inner 4th grade teacher want's to correct the "your" to "you're." Cheerio.
And the bretheren to brethren. Etc. etc. Anyway, B-Bob, just out of curiosity, why don't you want to have children? I do want to have children at some point...
Lol! I can't believe you have been a prof all this time, and it didn't register. I knew you were in education, but got my wires crossed somewhere and thought you were secondary. Personally, I could never teach primary, and doubt I could handle secondary school. Nowhere near the requisite patience, and was never a dilligent student myself, so the hypocrisy required would overwhelm me. I agree that they make a more lasting and deeper difference, on the whole, than we ever will. I come from a family of teachers, and have always been amazed at their workload. Of course, they don't have to publish... What field of study?
YOU CAUGHT A TYPO!!!! Today's T_J Award goes deservingly to SJC. Does anyone else notice that they become more alike as time passes? I'll agree that the starting points seem miles apart, but the distance is closing fast...
I haven't got tenure, but am thankfully beyond the T.A. days. Reminds me, B_Bob, do you have tenure? Also, is Bob Finn a HS teacher perchance? I used to get you two mixed up...
The questions, the questions! Kalgon, happy hour, take me away! This thread is seriously derailed, but perhaps the topic's been covered (again). SJC, I have a narrow urethra. No, actually, I would only be having kids because everyone else does it. I like them okay, and I enjoy seeing my friends' kids, but I don't have that passion for them. Lucky for me, I found a good egg who's foxy and feels the same way I do. No, not MacBeth. Mrs. B-Bob I mean. MacB, physics.
Well, according to T_J, I am one of these scumbags who needs to hone his "proofing and editing skills" (aka lawyers) .
Classic! What does it mean if you are past the T.A. days, but don't have tenure? What is the job title?
BTW, I missed this last time. Thanks for catching another typo. Whew. Don't know what I'd do without you. While we're on the subject, see if my typing is improving: Pedantic. There. How was that?
