I've known a lot of Hispanics in my time, most seem just like me. A few can speak Spanish, others can't. The first two generations of my family born in Texas spoke German, my grandparents dropped it completely though when they became adults right at the start of WWII. Not wanting to seem "too German" and the fact that most Lutheran churches stopped preaching German in services helped them not even be able to really speak it due to not using the language by the time I was born. I expect a lot more Americans to be bilingual in the future, like most Europeans are. I don't really think that is a bad thing. Why not just teach two languages in all schools. What is so frightening about bilingual children?
I don't understand this. Its ok to say America becoming less white is a good thing, but if i said American becoming less black, or any other race, i would be hammered for racism??
Because it would be racist. Whites are in the majority. They have always had the power, and have frequently used it poorly. In the history of white rule we have had the genocide of Indian tribes, slavery, oppression of blacks and other minorities, education discrimination, job discrimination, disregard for health care for blacks and other minorities, etc. The list goes on and on. However if we look at contributions to society and culture over that time, from music to fashion, a huge percentage has come from the U.S. minority populations. So when you say that becoming less black would be a good thing, there is all the oppression, efforts by whites to keep blacks down adding weight to that statement. Where as saying that becoming less white has none of that history. Minorities have never held enough power to oppress whites, keep them out of the best education, jobs, etc. They have never had the power to put the interests of the minority communities in the forefront on television, magazines, newspapers, or films. They have never had the power to make the laws that are most important to helping the minority communities. America becoming less white, would expose people who live in mostly white only neighborhoods to a ton of new people, and ideas that they've previously been scared of. There are reasons why it would be good, for the U.S. to be less white. There would be no benefit except to please racists if were to become less black.
No, racism is racism, no matter who it's directed toward. In every single generalization you posted, someone could come up with a corollary toward another race. If you are judging people based on their race and making negative statements about a race, that is racism.
Well said. My biggest problem with demographics is not what color, religion, or ethnicity someone is, but whether they came here legally. I really don't think that's too much to expect. My mother-in-law came through Ellis Island in the late '30's, and still spoke Dutch until she passed away. There are people all over the world trying to immigrate here legally who have to wait for years. I know Latinos who's families have been here for generations that don't like illegal immigration, either. And I don't want some kind of "wall." Make employers insure that their employees have work visas, and fine those who hire people that don't. Have a mechanism for people who come from across our borders for jobs to do it legally. I'm going to Mexico for 2 weeks in June, and had to get a damn passport! (the US government's fault, lol) D&D. No Walls!
some expert analysis by the first poster like someone else said, its not about color, its about legality. The immigrant issue is huge and unfortunately its probably beyond repair.
Jorge, you may very well be correct. Careful, given your background which we all understand. Your tone is farily neutral on this issue on this post. Keep up the good effort. Dad

I wasn't judging anyone based on their race. I was talking about the history of race in this country. I was explaining why saying it might be good if the country was less black, had a different significance than saying it would be good if it was less white. To ignore all of the history and trying to equate the two statements is to be intentionally ignorant of matters that have gone on, and do go on today.
From the article: "people of Hispanic origin may be of any race" ie. Hispanics are pretty much included in "white". Hence the term non-Hispanic whites.
You my friend, are racist. I could come up with lots of racist retorts, like "blacks are the ones that sold themselves into slavery blah blah blah", but in the end, it doesn't matter what happened. Get over it. Move on. Everyone get along. The laws protect nearly everyone now. Another common racist retord: Minorities are the majority in prision In the end, call it what you want. If you single out a race, its racist...regardless which way you twist it. All races have done bad things. What matters is what you do.
I think we are at two different points when it comes to understanding the history of slavery and race in this nation. Best of luck to you.
