I would rather have a team be horrible one year and be damn good another, than have the same average 8-8 9-7 year after year.
In the time it took you to type that post, Ladd Herzeg downed a bottle of gin and donkeypunched a hooker.
That's how bad the Texans are. Compare them to the Oilers and they make fans want to remember the good ol'days of 7 straight playoff appearances. I'd rather have playoff chokers than all the time chokers.
Don't get me wrong, I will always cherish my Oiler memories like when my Dad ran me to the store 10 minutes before the 79 AFC championship game against the steelers because he said I couldn't watch the game unless I had an Oiler hat on. Also: David Williams getting benched for having the gall to attend the birth of his kid Ladd Herzog getting tanked and mooning a wedding party Hugh Campbell Buddy Ryan clocking Kevin Gilbride on national TV No tailgating being allowed at games Chuck Noll lecturing Jerry Glanville about class at midfield after a game against the steelers Buddy Ryan guaranteeing a Superbowl if the Oilers signed Wilbur Marshall Sam Wyche kicking an onside kick against us while up 45-0, then calling Glanville a "phonie" and a "joke" after the 61-7 drubbing. Hugh Campbell Yep, those were the days. Come to think of it, at least it was never boring - like the current franchise...
this is dead on. the oilers were definitely more interesting. the texans have been ridiculously bland.
Over the last 3 years, the last 2 years in particular, the Texans have been pretty exciting to watch. Granted, 9 times out of 10 we end up pissed off at the outcome, but we're left hanging til the end most times. Meanwhile, the disappointment brought by the Oilers is the stuff of legends. The Texans have a ways to go before reaching Oiler level epic failure/heartache.
You've been saying this often, and now that I think about it you're exactly right. I want to care, I really do, I want that vibe, but it's just not there. There's no personality, no swagger, no nothing. Bland vanilla (actually that's a disservice to vanilla, which is delicious) corporate crap. When you have an owner that apparently doesn't care about winning, this is what you get. As an aside: If McNair leads the charge and plays hardline with the players' union during the next collective bargaining session (especially on issues of post-career health, pensions, etc), I may swear off the Texans, and maybe the NFL, for the foreseeable future. Their business practices are disgusting.
nowhere NEAR as exciting as the Oilers of the late 80's/early 90's. the Oilers I identified with. for better or for worse. but that's not really my point. they're just bland.
