I like Panic! at the Disco, Death Cab For Cutie, The Postal Service, Dallas Green / City of Colour, Band of Horses, Story of the Year, etc. but I wouldn't consider myself emo at all. I don't dress "emo-ish", and I might be able to pick most of those band's lead singers out of a lineup. That's as far as it goes. I just like the way the music sounds.
Many people i know are emo. i however am not. and the only way i know them is because they were classmates back in high school. 1. they (guys as well) wear very tight skinny pants 2. have really long hair hanging in front of their face 3. paint their nails black 4. are really immature 5. go to local rock shows a lot 6. probably on drugs 7. generally outcasts 8. emotional (i dont understand this for guys, its like what gonna happen to men if this generation continues. i hate when guys are all emotional for any woman they meet. youre a f_ing man...take it like a man) 9. they skate or spend a lot of time at the skate park 10. they listen to all the emo music. 11. they wear skinny pants!!! i dont know but i think its kinda gay
God....emo sucks so much ass......my ex loved Coheed and Cambria....that band is absolute ****....the guy sounds like a little girl! How can people like this crap???
no, it makes you gay. emo is just a bunch of whiney suburban white kids who want to look tough and "punk" with lots of tattoos, black t-shirts, black nail polish and if they are really going for it, eyeliner - but really just write songs about how they like a girl but the girl doesnt like them and why doesnt this girl like them and it hurts that the girl they like doesnt like them. basically, not very punk rock material from a lyric standpoint. "mall punk" is another term for it. fall out boy - good charlotte - dashboard confessional - ect. "i got this jacket at hot topic" the term "emo" has been around since the mid-80's though - its just that its been bastardized over the last few years. rites of spring was the first band that i think the term "emo" was applied to. a couple of the dudes in this band went on to form fugazi. at the drive in would probably me a more recent band that got the "emo" tag, but didnt suck ass.
I enjoy Death Cab for Cutie and Dashboard Confessional. Should I start cutting myself? Thanks in advance. Man, it's awesome to be an adult and be able to enjoy any music you like without worrying about what it says about you socially. Can I sit at the cool table, though?
i heard someone use the term "emo" to describe someone, e.g." he's so emo"...i thought it was something along the lines of calling someone a tool
Anyone else think it funny that someone called dullknife is posting about cutting? Emo always makes me think about Joplin: "I don't understand... how come you're gone? I don't understand why half the world is still crying. And the other half of the world is still crying too, man, and I can't get it together." Except she was a lot more manly about it. I think I'm going to go listen to some Janice Joplin right now. She kicks ass.
emo - emo tional sad sad generation this is Godless and won't listen to sound instruction Lots of parents at fault on this one. It's amazing how everything is accepted as normal nowadays.
I like a couple Death Cab for Cutie songs too. But I know I'm not EMO. I didn't even know if that group is referred as a EMO group. I thought they were more like a new school Pet Shop Boys or Erasure. LOL.
Dashboard Confessional and Jimmy Eat World is 2 of my favorite bands, but don't consider myself emo....
And I find it kinda funny I find it kinda sad The dreams in which I'm dying Are the best I've ever had I find it hard to tell you I find it hard to take When people run in circles It's a very, very mad world mad world
I love how you posted a screwed up interpretation to fit your agenda. I will say they're screwed in the head somewhere, whether it be because of something in their upbringing, something current, or because they aren't given the attention they need and so they act it out in this manner. I will also say that alot of those people if not all, are lacking a real spiritual life.
Emo kids are just looking for attention. They say they are obsessed with "good" music, but they listen to nothing more than crap new age wanna be "emo" rock. People have already listed the bands. Emo's can be picked out for certain behaviors, such as:
1. The guys have medium length parted hair that covers part of their face 2. The girls have crazy messy hair (that is quite often pretty sexy) 3. The guys wear unusually tight pants 4. Most are either gay, bi, or have at least messed around with the same sex 5. The messing around is usually to look for attention 6. They like going to see local bands, and support even the worst bands 7. They are extremely immature (you can't miss the immaturity) 8. Most try and smoke weed, but also do ecstasy and a wide array of drugs 9. Most claim to "cut", but very few actually do (another plea for attention) 10. Jimmy Eat World is actually a very good band 11. They usually shop around the stores "Hot Topic" and "Spencer's" 12. The hair color of such individuals changes quite frequently 13. They don't always wear all black (this is a common misconception) 14. Alot are quite often atheist 15. Most aren't actually depressed 16. Most try to be anti-conformists (by conforming to emo ideals hahaha) 17. Alot of them are subject to harrassment from many of their peers

As for your nieces, don't worry about them. They will be fine. It is a phase that usually blows over. Just get them more involved with girls who are more "normal". While acting "emo" is not a harmful behavior, it quite often leads to being friends with people who are involved in harmful activities such as drugs. That is actually a realistic risk that is there, it should not be ignored. Not to worry you, but a good number of these kids do have some sort of police record. They enjoy doing some very "stupid" things, which baffle me. But, again don't worry because most of these problems don't arise until a later age, with the said beginning at around 14 or 15. Your nieces should be fine by then.

Panic at the Disco! sucks....No offense but they just aren't talented enough to make it big. I do really like Jimmy Eat World. Try listening to Pain, Hear You Me, The Middle, Bleed American, Work. These are pretty good songs IMO.
Good day....Sorry for going on a rant
