dude i think were all in the same boat...ive got about 10 active quests, and ive been putting off doing the main quest so i can clear out the active side quests...only i keep finding new quests to do, this slaughterfish quest has been sitting at the bottom of my list since the first time i played...i guess its all part of the fun
Agreed. I haven't finished that quest either. Furthermore, I haven't been to all of the towns. I have only been to Chorral, Imperial City, Kvatch, and the one up north that I can't remember the name of right now, while I'm at work. I'm level 19 right now, and as soon as I sleep I will be level 20. I have done a tiny bit of the main quest. I only have 2 recommendations from the Mage's guild. I haven't done one fighter's guild quest, and I've only done one theive's guild quest. Everything else has been done via side quests, or exploring various forts, and ruins in between towns. It has gotten so full that I have even stopped going in all of those. I make sure they are marked on the map, and I'm keeping a to-do list of all the ones I've seen but haven't explored yet. The game will definitely keep me busy for a long time. Then I am looking forward to some expansions, mods, or even trying the game again with a different character class. By the way, is anyone else having trouble with Dread Zombies? I hate them! They regenerate health super fast, and I often have to use restore/fortify fatigue spells and potions when fighting them. I rarely kill one on my first attempt. I usually have to load up a save, prepare the right potions, and spells, then give it another shot.
It's good to see all of you guys still enjoying the game. It's one of the reasons I've been yapping about and waiting for this game for months. I loved the openness of Morrowind and how you were part of a world rather than a bunch of FedEx linear quests. This game is even bigger than Morrowind from the looks of it. I think Arena dwarfed Oblivion though in terms of landsize... it was waaaaay bigger from what I understand, but I never played it. The best games for me are the ones I don't get bored with after about 2 weeks...and those have been few and far between. Oblivion is an RPG classic.
Has anybody really taken on the main quest yet? I was reading some other boards saying the earlier you do the main quest, the better, since if you level up too high, the leveled creatures you face in the late stages of the main quest are killer. Of course I read another person claiming that if you are a super fast theif like character, you can pretty much run through most of the main quest without fighting at all.
I've heard that, but I believe good weapons, spells, potions, strategy and saves can help you defeat most creatures even at higher level. I could well be wrong in my belief though since I haven't done it yet.
With regards to the main quest being easier early on... it's not exactly a cakewalk for me right now. I'm only lvl 10 or 11 right now I think. Closing the first gate in Kvatch wasn't too bad. But there's a secondary quest after that where you help them reclaim the Kvatch castle or something. You get to take 3 or 4 guards with you to fight your way up to the guard tower. I've been getting owned on the trip. I mean, I could make it up there eventually, but my sidekicks would be dead and it's taking me forever to kill these guys (atronachs, and those triceratop clanfear things, and scamps, with some dremoras thrown in). But I've decided to enchant my armor and get some rings and necklaces with enchantments made. That should help me a ton.... we'll see.
Yeah... there're like 15 or so quests in the main line. I'm on like 12 or 13. Almost done. I figure I'll do the side quests later.
I thought this was a funny mod worth mentioning: INEBRIATION Some screens: http://www.tessource.net/files/images/Inebriation-1.JPG http://www.tessource.net/files/images/Inebriation-2.JPG http://www.tessource.net/files/images/Inebriation-3.JPG I'm a bit surprised that there have been so many great mods made this quickly after the game's release. It will be interesting to see what starts popping up in the next year or so.
I heard about this part before I had leveled up very much. So I got it done with as a level 5 and even then it was hard as hell. I heard that anyting past a lvl 15 is damn near impossible.
I think I read that it gets easier once you start hitting the higher levels (like say around level 30). I thought I read that some people at that level had little to no problems fighting (which led to some new mods being created to make the game more difficult). I guess that's when the default level scaling system starts losing its effect. That was more about the game in general, but I imagine the Kvatch quests wouldn't be much different.
Well I pushed back the main quest until I worked on the subquests (did all the various city quests, all the Dark Brotherhood quests, about 3/4 of the Mage guild, 1/2 the Fighter's guild, just started the Thief guild, and I'm the Arena Champion). I'm level 13, although if I let my character sleep he'd probably be 15 by now. I'm blasting the Oblivion gate at Kvatch right now. The Daedras are punks, and the Clannfears are pretty simple. My equipment is pretty nice (a mix of Orcish and Dwarven armor, a Glass Longsword and bow, and a Silver Longsword for ghosts, lichs, and others or their ilk) but nothing outstanding. Plus, since I'm a Nord Fighter-type, my stats are pretty good (Strength 96, Endurance a buffed 103, everything else around the 50s) for standing up to the Daedra. I don't know how strict mages can play this game since everything charges right at you, leaving you very little room to move and cast spells.
I agree. Any of you guys playing a pure mage class? I have no clue how you'd survive... especially without the levitation spells like in Morrowind. Unless you have spells so powerful you can obliterate people from a distance, that is.
Hey, just got it for 360... one question: How f-ing long does it take to get out of the first dungeon! Good lord I've been down here forever with these suckass rats!
stick with it man, it wont take that long at all...just when i started to get impatient, i made it out of there
On the other hand, I'm a warrior mage type, level 17 but I only have like 120 SP... so you can't cast any cool spells.
It kind of depends on what you mean by "pure mage," but I think it wouldn't be too bad being a mage, although again, I've yet to play Oblivion. Conjure up some allies (and maybe weapons/armor), fortify your attributes while weakening the enemy's status (including poison and paralysis), and use the occasional heal spell when necessary (maybe create a "regen" spell). Granted, it may not be that easy, but then again, pure mages probably don't try to go head on into battle either. They'd probably be using stealth-type techniques (like a thief), using chameleon/invisibility spells to conceal their presence, while also using detect life (and other detect spells) to know where any nearby enemies are (so you don't encounter them head on without planning for it first). I'd rather just be more of a battlemage (or similar class) that uses magic for support though. I have read that the magic system is a bit weak and there are some mods that attempt to make it easier for mages to play the game (stronger magic, longer summons, etc.). There are some interesting spells too; I saw one spell today called "Fairy Fire" IIRC that actually does 0 damage to an enemy, but I think the enemy will "panic" for the duration of the spell (like 60 seconds IIRC). One WIP mod that I saw seemed to conjure up swords that would attack nearby enemies, which seems like a cool idea if it is implemented correctly. I love mods.
RC, by the time you do all that at the beginning the enemy will be on you... that's what I don't get. Your spells to start out are so weak (I guess?) and these guys close in fast and have decent AI (they hide and dodge your attacks). I just was wondering what a pure mage could do with little melee skills. I can understand later in the game where they must have some really powerful spells that can hit, but near the beginning...hmm. I'm a battlemage type and it's tough trying to figure out whether I need more str, int, etc.
