The new content is pretty cool. I haven't lost a horse yet, from damage, so I don't know if I will pay money to buy him some armor, but I like that Bethesda is continuing to put out content for the game. I am moving on at a snail's pace rarely using quick travel, and exploring as much land as I possibly can. The game has really lived up to the expectations I had for it.
Can you name your horses? Sadly that will go a long way to determine whether or not I will buy this game.
I'm level 7 and still haven't done anything... LOL! I still haven't even closed that portal at the beginning of the game. Wow... I'll probably be playing this game for months at this rate. Talk about huge.
Ok, Now that I am taking some time off it looks like this is a must buy. So, PC or X-box 360, which is the better interface?
I've played about 30 hours and am at level 10. At level 7 you're probably strong enough to close the portal when you get around to it. I did it at around level 4 or 5, but it was tough, lots of loads. I don't remember what level I was at when I beat Morrowind, must have been like 30 or 40 though... so at that rate I've still got a LOOOONG ways to go.
Levels in Oblivion don't matter as much I don't think... I believe the monsters you encounter level with you. If you go into the portal at lvl 3 or something, you'll find monsters around that strength... if you go in at lvl 10, you'll get those. Or are you saying there's something level-specific about closing the portal? In which case, my mistake. BTW, it's not that I don't want to go in there and try closing the portal, it's just that there's sooooo much other crap that keeps popping up to do. I think I'm going to try doing the Mage Guild recommendations first. It took me forever to get rid of being a vampire... crap talk about a pain in the arse. Great ability enhancements as a vampire, but not being able to run around in daylight sucked. BTW, I've finally found the biggest disappointment so far in Oblivion for me : NO LEVITATION!!! In Morrowind you could levitate in the air and pummel enemies that would melee you... you could basically fly from point to point with leviation. It doesn't seem as if if it's included in Oblivion. Sadness.
Are you sure about this? Because after you close the gate, there's a follow-on quest, in which at first the monsters pwned me. But then five levels later I was able to do it.
I'm pretty sure he's right, unless, like DoD said, there are some level specific monsters you're encountering. When you level up, so do the monsters (or newer, tougher monsters will show up). I've read stories about some people who tried a quest at say level 4-5 and decided to level up since it was pretty tough; much to their surprise, it actually got harder (in their opinions) when they tried the quest again at level 10 or so because the monsters had leveled up too. The focus should probably be more on your skill levels and your equipment more so than your actual level. I imagine that along with leveling up, you got some better equipment and increased the right skills that allowed the battles to become easier to you. Plus, you might have also found out better ways to do damage (like poison arrows or something similar). BTW, I might finally get a chance to check out the game at the end of next week. I'm looking forward to that chance, although it won't be for long.
I can confirm this. There are quite a few specific caves or quests that have fixed-strength bad guys, but the random creatures do level. Around the Oblivion gates I've gone from Imps, to flaming guys, to Minotaurs, and now to Daedroth. And if you remember the Daedroth from Morrowind, between then and now they've been visiting Balco with Berry.
Okay I believe that... maybe I've just learned to fight better. I've found that the 3rd person perspective is easier to fight with than the first person.
It depends for me... I like running around in 3rd person, but in a dungeon it's always first person and when I know I'll need to target from a distance it's first person. But if it's something whimpy that I don't mind melee'ing with knowing I'll survive easily, I can do 3rd person fighting. I'm a customized battlemage type.
I'm a custom "paladin" class that's with what I like to think is a fairly diverse skill set (blade, heavy armor, block, security, sneak, restoration, and conjuration [I believe]). Gives you good melee, some sneakiness, and a little bit of magic for healing and summoning. I'm still having fun doing the side quests. Finished up the Dark Brotherhood series. Probably go back and finish up the mage quests before moving on to the Fighters and Thieves Guild quests. Then I'll think about moving on to Kvetch and doing the main quest. For those of you who do the Dark Brotherhood quests, a piece of advice. Do NOT go to sleep on the slab in the sanctuary. You'll get vampired. It's handy to have for a few stat boosts and a couple of fun little skills, but it gets annoying when the sunlight starts hurting you and traders ignore you. And getting the cure is a pain as well. The quest takes forever and some of the ingredients you need are real difficult to obtain.
I am the same page. I didn't close the first gate until level 11. I gained 3 levels worth while I was in there and finally slept when I came out. I am level 18 now, and I haven't been to another gate yet, though I have seen a couple.
You can't name your horse, unfortunately. If you didn't like Morrowind you might not like this one. It is more focused than morrowind, but there are a lot of books(though you don't have to read any of them, I don't think.) Even though it does seem more tight knit, there is a lot of running around that you can do. You could quck travel most places if you wanted, but you would miss more than half the game content that way. Wait until it is on sale, or if you have a 360 you can rent it and test it out.
Went north to Bruma for the first time today...damn it looks cool when you hit the mountains. The 'winter' setting is nice.
I like that no matter what your starting character is, with a little bit of practice, they can do pretty much anything.
Yeah, I kinda just started the quests and got carried away. As for security and sneak, well, I knew that I'd have to bust open chests and ambush the real hard enemies so that was my little concession to practicality.
I was just messing with you. My custom "Dreamknite" has mostly paladin abilities too, but I added security for the same reason.
