It is usually kind of hard at first to make a lot of money. I remember picking up random herbs and flowers (plus any items left by wild animals) in Morrowind to sell at the "market," just to make a few extra gold pieces (or whatever they're called...I forget what Bethesda calls the currency for some reason..septim?). Guild quests are usually pretty good, as are any optional quests like them. If you are a really good thief (maybe with some invisibility spells?), you can steal things and make a lot of money doing that, although I don't know if it is as easy to do in Oblivion than in previous games.

Either way, it will probably take some time before you can really get some cash flow going. :)

edit: Oh yeah, forgot that Oblivion has an Arena, which brentdapmp mentioned. That would be good too assuming you're strong enough I imagine. Although usually, if you're a great warrior, you probably should have no problem with money.

I think I currently have about 150gold. I went into a cave and a dungeon after getting out of the sewer and found some there. I also found some blue crystals that I went to the merchant district and sold them to someone for gold. I hear a great way to earn some cash is to go to the arena and work your way up. I heard after you become grand champion of the arena (which you can do even if you are a level 1) gets you 6,000 gold. I am going to try that tonight.

If you have a high-end PC, then the PC version is better (graphics are just as good or better, although no HDR+AA; mods; higher res; adjustable sliders/graphics settings; faster load times).

However, if your machine is kind of old and would struggle with Oblivion, then the 360 is the way to go.

this is absolutely correct because I have a 40' HDTV and I play the game in 1080i. I also have it hooked up to surround sound which makes for one unbelieveable experience.

and noize do you have the areas around the Imperial city on your map? There are about 6 places around the city I can fast travel to. The arena is one of them. I found a book talking about all of these places and where they were in the city in a cave close to where you come out from the sewer.

True, although I suppose if you have the money, you could have a quad SLI 7900 GTX setup together with a 30" Dell monitor that will play Oblivion in 2560x1600, and then a nice sound system to back it up. :)

Man, that would be like 5-10K right there.

tv's... blah... get a 92-110" projector... now play it... :D That's gonna rock. lol.

It's been a couple of days since I bought the game and tried it out by running around... I kid you not - I'm still trying to figure out what kind of character to play. I'm leaning towards a Dark Elf battlemage.... can use destruction magic, can melee with a sword, or carry a bow (no way any character of mine uses a bow... boooo).

I am kind of trying to figure out what I want to be as well. And I am starting to agree with you on the bow thing. I mean the bow is almost pointless for me to use since it does so little damage. And damnit every time I kill some poor innocent person, even in their house, a guard always shows up and I always stupidly resist arrest and get my ass killed. :(

I found this in GameFaq where it tells you how to get a lot of money quickly. This method work better then the Arena bet and you get a lot more money back. This could a spoiler so don't read any further if you don't want to know.

Theres a guy named Dorian in the Talos plaza district in the Imperial City that you can kill and loot gold infinately.

    1. Break into his house at night and kill him.
    2. Loot his clothing/items first and his gold last. Do not do take all command.
    3. The gold can be looted infinately by pressing A over and over.

I would suggest breaking in then bribing him to his max disposition. I was getting 258 gold per A pressed. Twenty minutes later I had 2 mill easy.

I read this on the gamefaqs forum and many other people are only getting like 8-30 gold.. I guess I was very lucky getting 258 per tap. I don't know if his body stays forever so get your fill before leaving. Make sure to save every few minutes.

    LOL, that's him to a t.

I'm doing the Arena thing and I swear, I put as much money in as I get since I need to restock on some healing potions. I hate buying stuff. It seemed so much easier in Morrowind, plus the actual cost of things was cheaper. I miss the good old days when 35 septims used to get you a standard restore health potion. Now it's like 150 from an apprentice merchant and it doesn't even fill your life bar back up. The economy has just been awful since the emperor was killed.

They only good thing about the Arena, IMHO, is that you get to practice your fighting and level up, though I'm one match away from Gladiator rank and I'm only level 2 right now.

LOL! This is cracking me up... the good old days!

I was doing the Arena thing for money but got tired of it and am now climbing the ranks of the Mages Guild. After that, I hope to get my hands on a nice katana. If y'all know where an elf can find one, hook a Bosmer up.

Oh, and I'm using a Wood Elf Nightblade.

Well, if you stick to the main quest for a bit, you end becoming a Blade and get free run of their armory.

How's your alchemy skill? Not that I'm strongly advocating using a bow (prefer magic+sword combo myself) but perhaps you could poison (or use some other effect like paralyze) your arrows, giving you a pretty good advantage against an enemy. You'll probably have to finish him/her/it off with a close-range weapon though.

BTW, I noticed on other forums that people are just finding out that the game's enemies scale to your level, and some of them didn't seem to like it. Basically, if you are having problems with enemies in a cave at level 3, it probably won't be "easier" at level 14 since the enemies have gotten stronger just like you. Of course, you should probably have much better equipment, more/better spells (if you use magic), better skills, etc., which could make it "easier" depending on how you play (like using coated arrows). I guess this is just a bit of a warning to those playing the game and think that simply leveling up will make the game much easier.

Speaking of scale, check out how the engine scales to lower end PCs:

That's a different kind of "wow" for the graphics. :)

Reminds me of this rude-boy fantasy thriller from years past (I played the analog cassette-tape drive version - it only took about 20 minutes to load)

well RC yesterday I killed my first NPC and I was very happy......until a guard came in the house I killed him in and took me out. I did for the first time put some poision on my blade and it helped some. I picked up a lot of stuff early on in the game and am trying to make as many potions as I can. I am assuming the more you make the more your alchemy skill goes up. So I will have to hunt for some good herbs I can use to poision my enemies.

And anyone who is playing oblivion that way is disgracing this game. This game is so beautiful and to scale it back like that is just blastphemy.
