1) Cast a soul trap spell 2) Enchant a weapon with soul trap (I think this is a waste, btw) 3) Get Umbra which has Soultrap built in
Thanks for the suggestions. And I do always keep my armor in top shape and I am a lvl 65 in heavy armor so I don't know why I am dying so much.
How fast are you guys leveling up? I feel like I am leveling up extremely slowly. I am about 35 hours in and am a lvl 12. I have thought a couple of times about starting over and creating a new character since I have some major skills I wish were minor.
I was leveling up pretty slowly at first simply because I wanted to run around and get a feel for the whole environment. I really didn't care about leveling as much as having fun just running around. I just started leveling up faster, but not by much. I still have barely done anything on the main quest. All I've done is close the first oblivion gate. Still haven't done much after that. I'm level 18 with over 80 hrs of play... lol. Don't worry about how long it's taking you as much as if you're enjoying playing the character you've created. Recreate your character if you have to (yeah, it's a pain). It's best you do that now before you get really deep into it. What type of character are you playing again?
Mmm... sweet destruction... I just created this interesting spell : Drain Health 100 pts for 1 sec on target Weakness to Fire 100% for 1 sec on target Weakness to Frost 100% for 1 sec on target Weakness to Shock 100% for 1 sec on target Frost Damage 25 pts for 1 sec on target Fire Damage 25 pts for 1 sec on target Shock Damage 25 pts for 1 sec on target Dungeon crawling just got a bit easier... I think I'll strengthen it. One cast of this is only 89 magicka. Right now I'm wearing unenchanted armor so I can raise my armorer skill, so I don't have any INT, WIS, STR bonuses that I usually do, so I can only cast this 2 times before having to wait to regen magicka. With the enchanted armor, I may be able to fire this off 3-5 times, I think. I've killed 4 bandits in and around dungeons so far with this... each has only taken 1 cast. Muhaha...
Just cleared out Sercen with that spell... about 5 or 6 bandits. I didn't get hit once. Only the Bandit Ringleader took more than 1 cast of the spell to die and a 2nd cast dropped him.
I am a nord and think I messed up putting speechcraft, blunt, blade without any magika as my major skills. I literally can't cast any spells more than a 10pt frost damage one I bought. Hey Dr is there any way to enchant armor and other things other than using soul gems that have soul's in them? And how did you create those spells you just talked about? And where is this Umbra woman I keep hearing about?
Couple of things Brent, I've read a few character guides and most suggest that you don't really need blunt and blade unless you are going for straight melee with no magicka. Another tip for if you restart. Save your game right before you exit the sewers into the wilderness. Then you'll have a place to recreate characters whenever you want, without having to go all the way through the tutorials (was this posted here before? I'm not searching through the thread to find out).
1) Nords are best-suited to warrior/fighter type players. You need to think about how you want to play the game when you choose the race and skills. If you want to cast a lot of spells as you major offensive firepower, then a Nord probably isn't a good choice - a breton or one of the elves would be. If you want to fight with a sword or axe all the time, then a Nord, Orc, or Redguard is a good choice. If you want to do a little of each effectively, then a dark elf is probably your best choice (that's what I am). 2) Speechcraft is probably not that necessary a skill. You can always wear an item that brings your speechcraft up... or bribe them or something. 3) Having both blunt and blade is a waste. Just get blade or just get blunt (I like Blade myself). 4) That's the only consistent way to enchant items that I know about. The other way would be to use the Sigil Stones you get by shutting down Oblivion Gates. 5) I created the spell in the Arcane University in the Imperial City. To have access to this, you need to do the Mages Guild quests to get recommendations from something like 7 people in 7 different Mages Guilds.
thanks for the tips castor and yes I believe I will go home and restart with a new character. 35 HOURS IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you are very correct Dr I made some bad mistakes when creating my character. I guess that is what I get for making this my first RPG.
Don't worry about it... have you completed many quests? If not, it's no big deal. Read about how people are creating characters on the 'Net before you create your own. But like I said, figure out how you want to play first... a pure fighter, a pure mage, or a combination. Then build your character accordingly. Find out which races have which skills, strengths, and weaknesses.
So you don't have to go all the way through the mage guild quests to get access to this. I just got the 7 recommendations the last time I played and I didn't explore anything after that. Does this also give you access to the enchating shrine or is that the reward for completely finishing the quest line?
You get the 7 recommendations, which gives you access to the Academy. And that's it - you can make your own spells and enchant your weapons. I've only done 1 more Mages Guild quest beyond that. I'm telling you, I was serious when I said I think I'll still be playing this game in another few months. lol.
I have completed over 30 quests. But maybe you can help me out. I want to be a good blade combat fighter/mage and I think I will choose Dark Elf this time. What 7 major skills do you have and are there any you wish you would not have chosen?
I'm a Dark Elf custom class : I chose Blade, Alteration, Conjuration, Destruction, Mysticism, Restoration, Light Armor. My regret is light armor... I should've probably gone with Heavy Armor. If you're going to be going into melee, light armor will get eaten up. When I level up, I usually put points into Strength, Willpower, and Intelligence. Every so often, I'll put some into Endurance, but that's it... I don't know if I've put anything into any other attribute when leveling up. BTW, you've completed more quests than I have, I think. I think I've done 26.
Hmm... from reading around, it appears Weakness to [X] + [X] damage is not a good solution. Weakness to Fire will make them weak to fire, but the fire won't have any effect until the next spell is cast... so combining them in 1 spell isn't that great if you can only cast the spell once from what I can see... hmm... gotta look into this.
I found a shortblade that does frost damage and also weakness to frost. I thought they worked together but since it's a blade, I can hit them again and it casts another frost damage effect.
Yup.. on a blade it's not bad because you can whack away repeatedly at the monster. I'm thinking of a good way to go about this with a spell though. I want to test out what Weakness to say Fire + Weakness to Magic + a Fire spell will do...
Holy crap... here's something I just read : At level 93 skill in destruction : A) 100 Weakness to Magic on touch for 3 seconds (5 magicka cost) B) 100 Weakness to Magic, Fire, Frost, Shock on touch for 3 seconds (14 magicka cost) C) 8 fire, frost, and shock on touch for 8 seconds (41 magicka cost) Cast spell A, then spell A again, then spell B, then spell C... result : 3072 Damage for 65 magicka!! The last spell's effect is magnified 16 times by the first 3 you cast! Of course the difficulty comes in... can you sit still and cast those 4 spells within 3 secs of each other while getting beat on...
