I consider early 90's the Golden Age, because thats when all the quality hip hop variety FIRST broke open and expanded (thats what a Golden Age is)

Though I'd say mid-late 90's was my personal era

Fugees was the first hip hop concert I went to. Where I first saw Canibus, just ripping it. All that together with ATLiens irreverent sound, Nas and Wu-Tang's long awaited followups, even Timbaland and Missy Elliot production sound, I thought we entered the "next phase" lol.

Though not all of it positive (all that East-West Coast BS trying to F*** everything up), was just a LOT going on at the time. People didnt even have time to give a crap about Jay-Z "Reasonable Doubt" the so-called underrated classic released then

6'N the morning' police at my door Fresh adidas squerk across the bathroom floor Out the back window I make a escape Don't even get a chance to grab my old school tape Mad with no music but happy 'cause I'm free And the streets to a player is the place to be Gotta knot in my pocket weighin' at least a grand Gold on my neck my pistols close at hand I'm a self-made monster of the city streets Remotely controlled by hard hip hop beats But just livin' in the city is a serious task Didn't know what the cops wanted Didn't have the time to ask.

    Word.

Does anyone else correlate the 90s peaking in terms of crime and hip hop? And the rising crime rate was of course correlated to the Roe v Wade ruling (those aborted would have been hitting their 18-22 in the late 90s when crime drastically dropped).

    Abortion killed hip hop.

So I don't ramble even more, short version bullet point style:

    - Have read the abortion link to lower crime.
    - Definite crime, violence, gritty street life in rap early 90s, noticably less later.
    - Can link abortion to lesser crime. Hard to link abortion to less violent hip hop because:

    - I think Biggie/Tupac deaths was best and WORST of rap. Was symbolic events forcing community to re-examine itself, had to clean things up a little more.
    - Also the gang and mafioso rap themes were running its course on its own. And rap fans from start to finish through the decade just grew older more out of it, more mature with families, jobs, responsibilities to tend to.
    - Internet & technology's made people more lazy and detached. Decent chance the living unaborted would fall in line with the laziness.

(Though along with less crime and less engaging subject matter, can also say with abortion there's some NON-born hip hop TALENT that coulda been had. Maybe the next Tupac coulda came into the world. But can you imagine 30-50 MILLION MORE US CITIZENS LIVING NOW ? MORE people in JAIL too. For the good of hip hop? NO THANKS)

Hmmm, well there were also a plethora of alternative rap groups in the early 90s that didn't rap about crime, and they also faded to oblivion. I think it was more the record companies just decided to go with the lowest common denominator, which the masses were perfectly fine with. Same thing happened to alternative rock in the early 90s.

Basically with rap's popularity rising, there were a few years where record companies were signing every rap group they could find. There wasn't a "formula" yet, so what you got is a whole bunch of diverse rap groups with a fresh and original take. Unfortunately a lot of these great rap album didn't sell as well as expected and over time the record companies eventually narrowed down the "formula" to what we have today.

Breaking my rule of one vid per post, but wanted to get all of these BB tracks in one go -- they average out to about 1990.
