I'm not sure what the Shanghai Shake is but the Dream shake was when he had his back to the basket at the block and faked toward the center/lane and then spun baseline for the fade away. The Dream Shake worked so well (besides being so much quicker than everyone else) because his normal move that direction was the jump hook shot. Is this what others remember as the Dream Shake?
the dream shake was nothing but fadeaway a shot. he would either fake left or right and fadeway to which ever opposite side.
The six of you that voted for the SS must be under the age of 15. Or you just never saw the dream play.
at least it isnt as bad as previous offseasons where people tried to argue that yao was better than hakeem
Those threads are the worst. The righteous outrage on one side versus the blinded rationalization on the other makes for pages and pages of doo-doo flinging. And we already got a forum for that kind of stuff.
are you not paying attention. neither of those moves are the dream shake. Hakeem scored half of his nightly 28 pts off the dream shake. the dream shake is the move brent and micha described not the move on the video above.
As the infamous LHutz would say... Huh, what?! Think before you post, it could lead to the loss of a loved one (your dignity).
dream shake wasn't really a specific move, it was that whole lean, fake, spin, hesitate, fade combination ... that gif is the dream shake, also where he dribbles into the paint on ewing then spins for a tomahawk, also where he dribbles hard to the right, spins to the key and fades , also when he...... that was the beauty of the dream shake, if it was one move he couldn't have made 10 FGs a game off of it.... the dream shake created turnarounds, fadeaways, hook shots, layups, doubleteams, dunks, and best of all "YESSS....and the foul" (even marv albert had to show excitement when dream put on a show) people want one move ... how often can you do one move??? does jordan have a single move?? no, it was just the dream shake, that part of his arsenal that he pulled out when he needed to get creative and find ways to score against the defense....all about moves and countermoves, keeping the defense off balance if anyone voted for the Shanghai Shake, i wish you were old enough to watch hakeem between 1992 and 1997 ... heck even between 85 and 92 you would have realized he's better than any front court player now...
Could he also have alternated between fadeaway and hook shot? I remember the move in the gif (in the first post) only without the second pump fake, he'd just present the ball one way, spin the other and then drop the baby hook (thats always been the dream shake in my head). I always thought that the move in the gif was a alternate version of the shake for when the defender had it figured out. My favourite hakeem move of all time was his spin off Ewing in the 94 finals - so graceful. You know where he drives right then spins off Ewing for the baseline dunk...simpy awesome.
What was the play in Yao's video, was it the game versus Indiana where he faked out Jermaine O'Neal and two other Pacers? The fact that Yao can even do those moves, at 310+ lbs is ridiculous. In the highlight videos you can seem him beating much more mobile players on spin-moves, faking them out of their shoes, or turning them the wrong direction. He'll never have the speed, quickness or explosiveness of Hakeem but he can be very effective offensively (except off the dribble). He's got a lot of advantages in today's NBA - height, good range on his jumper, high field goal percentage, high free throw percentage, and the skill to use either hand to score.
I think his lateral quickness is okay except when he's out on the perimeter trapping opposing guards. He does a credible job when matched up one-on-one with power forwards. Even Amare, who might be the most athletically gifted power forward, struggles to beat Yao down low.
