When I was a kid, I always felt a little guilty because I liked the Devil's solo better than Johnny's. I mean it had the funky guitar and bass line going for it. I always felt the Devil played for the song, where as Johnny was just showing off his chops.
YES!!!! You are absolutely right. I have always contended the devil got ripped off in that song. The devil was really the winner. I have always thought the exact same thing.
I think separation of Church and State has to do with not using public funds to promote religion. First of all, that song is not religious because it has the word Devil in it, and second, teaching religious music is not the promotion of religion. Not to give Charlie Daniels too much credit, but half the music that has ever been made has been religious. Not teaching it in music class is akin to not teaching about the Holocaust in history class because the victims were Jews. Besides, if you want to prevent a band from playing Charlie Daniels, you should dig up some of his other songs. I recall one that was about him and his band wandering into a gay bar by accident, and when they realized what they did, they all went into a homophobic rage and beat everyone up.... gotta love those classic hate crime tunes. Someone should start a poll because I think the Devil should have won the dual as well. I just listened to it on my Urban Cowboy soundtrack, which is an awesome CD if you don't have it.
its about like when Lightning Boy and Jack Butler dueled... Jack was just showing off his chops and the Karate Kid was actually playing for the song...altho..he should have gotten disqualified since he had help from Willie Brown to win that. and I agree about the Devil's solo...
