Here is my problem with chuck coach seems to force the offense thru chuck like he is yao when he should just get his points thru the natural flow of the offense and offensive rebounds. He is not a go to offensive player and it seems like every time chuck is in we go him like he is.
The Rockets don't really run plays for Chuck. But its a read-and-react offense, meaning you take what the defense gives you and every player is an option. When Chuck gets a touch in the low post, its because the defense is overplaying others and/or he has a mismatch (e.g. being guarding by Westbrook). Chuck also gets more touches in the high post than he ever did under JVG, because that's just how the Rockets start a lot of their sets. Again, if the defense overplays on the pass and there is an opening to the basket, Chuck will occasionally try to drive it in and make a play. He's isn't particularly good at it, but the Rockets believe its important that he makes himself a threat just to keep the defense honest.
I'll bet Chuck would be a total badass in the D-league, where he'd probably be more offense-minded. Three years ago, he'd average 15 rebounds there, but nowadays he'd get 20-25 points to go with them. Glad he's on our team.
Look, its great that has improved as much as he has but all it does is hide the fact that the team cannot win big with him as the starting center in the NBA and Rick Adelman should never put him and Battier in a situation where they have to create their own shot on offense.
FT shooting is one skill that can be improved through practice. I still cannot believe that a professional player can't make over 70% of his FTs. Yes, I am looking at you, Shaq.
Argggg..... Due to Yao's injury, we will have Chuck Hayes as the Starting Center for the rest of the season and maybe beyond. I like Chuck Hayes, but at 6'6", he is too short for an NBA center. He provides almost zero shot blocking abilities....
Actually, what will happen is with Yao gone the Rockets will look to acquire a real defense-minded center. Waiting for Yao's return is no longer an option. Chuck was always seen as a stop-gap -- not a real replacement.
We almost beat the Lakers with Chuck Hayes starting at center and no superstars. A prime Tmac or similarly talented wing could have taken us all the way that year. Chuck Hayes pulls his weight and is not the problem on this team. The problem with this team is that Shane Battier may well be the worst starting SF in the NBA, and Kevin Martin is a one-dimensional player who can't play defense or create for others. It's absolutely pathetic that he can't even put up 3 rebounds or 3 assists per game. Even Steve Nash can grab 3 rpg. Even Tmac's crippled corpse in 17mpg posts almost as many rebounds and assists as K-brick does getting starter minutes, and Tmac actually gets more steals and blocks.
