    the term of YOF is used too often.

    Basically, this thread ruled out any possibility that Rox won new fans after Yao was drafted, because they are all classified as YOF.

    This is ridiculous. Whether you are a Rox fan doesn't depend on "when", but "how".

    Well I figured that the number of Rox fans that came on board after Yao, but not because of Yao were very slim so i didn't bother putting that possibility in. Unfortunately, rocket fans in that situation will not be allowed to vote and this poll will (if it hasn't already) become a complete sham due to their loss. Oh well, there goes my job as a sociologist. ;)

    I think there should be a catagory called AYOF (Anit-YOF). These are the people who whenever they sniff a faint scent of YOF in a post, they jump in to bash the poster.

    I've always said that using labels is not always bad. It's just a convenient way to refer to something complex but that everybody understands. But using a generalization when debating an issue is always bad. It's very tempting to think, "If you are in a certain catagory, you must be wrong and I can't possibly agree with you." You can see this phenomenon very clearly in the D&D forum. Unfortunately, basketball discussions become the same as politcal discussions.

    I have been a Rockets fan since the late 70s. I joined this board in the summer of 2002 when Yao was drafted. I was a doubter at that time. I thought we should trade the pick for a good veteran center. When they said they'd take Yao, I looked all over the internet to get more information about this Chinese dude I knew nothing about. And I stumbled into this wonderful bbs. The rest, as they say, was history. :)

    I rather ignore him/her!

    I think the term YOF is used to discriminated and degraded people.

    However, if you wish to know, I am a Yao' s fan. I came here because of Yao.
    I wish the rocket to success and consider myself a new fan.
    This debating has been done several times already.
    I no longer care what your definition of a "true" rocket fan is.

    I'm glad that this poll is proving me wrong, my point was that I hate having fans of the team I love, only be fans of one player and bash the other 11 guys on the team. I hate fans that only want one player to succeed and they don't care about the team. All i want from the Rockets is for them to win, no matter who is on thier team.

    If Yao leaves. . .and then instantly you no longer like the rockets
    then that is what a YAO ONLY FAN is
    they are not ROCKET fans

    The bulls found this out when MJ left
    alot of 'Bulls Fans' were really on MJ only fans
    and
    instantly became WIZARD fans

    Well there was a few purposes for the poll:

    1. Track the numbers of new posters that Yao has brought to the board.

    2. Show amed that new Yao fans do not "dominate the board". Which is true because pre-yao rocketfans that post often still outnumber all the new Yao fans put together.

    3. I also thought it would be interesting to see how many people there are that read the board and don't post much. I usually lurk at the message boards that I frequent and wanted to see how many around here, do the same.

    I wasn't really planning on making this a whole debate on who's a real fan and who isn't a real fan. I just strictly wanted to know how much "new blood" Yao brought to the board, which is why I made the distinction in my original post that I was using the term YOF ONLY to refer to people that wouldn't be a rocket fan if yao wasn't drafted by the rockets.

    Well anyway. I thank everyone for voting. It was just an idle poll that I put up on a lazy sunday afternoon. My curiosity is sated, might as well let this thread die already.
