I don't like those guys either. But most of the Yao fans who've come to the site are objective people and will easily admit to Yao's failings. The problem with the YOF bashing is that it's insulting to the Yao fans that do care about the Rockets and know about basketball.

Continue doing what your doing, just don't throw YOF around gratuitously. :)

As to m-cable's original thread. I will defend Yao. But I've only defended him against ridiculous claims like from Juugie. The whole term YOF is ridiculous because you cannot define it and however you define it is insulting to someone. The term needs to die.

    You are absolutely correct.

I frequent the lakersground forums(my brother is a huge laker fan) and the similarities are scary. Id say the rockets fans here talk about yao the same way lakersground does with Kobe(with the needing to trade shaq for Kobecentric players, and crap like that).

If this place ever got as bad as lakersground i dont know wat id do.

I was an Olajuwon and Drexler fan during the end of Phi Slamma Jamma and became a Rox fan when Drem was drafted.

I average over 5 posts per day, and the only reason it is that low is because I spent 6 months lurking.

WHo the hell is DREM? And why isn't he still playing...? ;)

This thread is no less important than the Battle of the CHUCKs thread, where we decided that Nevitt was better than Jones.

But seriously, folks... we'll all be here all week... try the veal...

    Hey yipengzhao...

I'm from Missouri too (you wouldn't have guessed from my monikor) and I can relate to not having a sport's team to root for. Central and southern Missouri (where I'm from) is sort of a limbo area for sports. When I was growing up, most people were bulls fans which drove me crazy since I hated the bulls (I thought that they had the refs in their pockets and too many fans were bandwagon people). But there wasn't really any other teams around. So instead of becoming another team's fan, I just ended up being an anti-bull's fan. And since I lived in a small town of 150 people, that meant that it was 1 against 149 come game time!

But getting back to the thread topic, I don't really see any catagory that fits me. I just moved to Houston three years ago and yes, I did start watching the rockets because of Yao Ming (because one of my friends hyped him up so much when he was drafted). But after watching just a few games, I quickly became a rockets fan instead of just a Yao fan. This team has quite a cast of characters, from Steve's emotional play to Mo's goofiness to Cato's hard knox attitude. If Yao left this team, I would still watch the rockets play. But, I would also watch whatever team Yao, Steve, or Cat went to too (meaning my wife would probably divorce me if the rockets get split up :p). So I really can't choose any of the options from this list...

Isn't it simple? A YOF cheers for Yao's stat line regardless of outcome. And, if Yao left the team, a YOF would no longer root for the Rockets. I don't have any problem with fans cheering for Yao, or Yao as a favorite player. I think he's a great player as well and love his dry sense of humor. But Rocket's fans (like me) do not like those who cheer for Yao in spite in the Rockets.

Believe me they exist. I met one on the basketball courts of California... He wants Yao to leave as a free agent and come to Golden State where there's a larger "Chinese community."

    Now that's a YOF!

right i agree with that assessment. i just don't like how a lot of people who don't deserve it are grouped into that category. and also how it's become a term where elitists use it to discredit other people.

most yao fans don't cheer in spite of the rockets. i know who your talking about though... like Bobliu.

I have been a staunch Rockets Fan for 23 years and at present my favourite players are Yao Ming and Nachbar.
So what! Its just entertaining ourselves while we prepare to go to the afterlife.

I hope I got the quote working right? It's the first time I tried on this board. Anyway, I grew up near West Plains in south central Missouri but I went to college at Rolla. Columbia is a pretty cool place. I had a couple of friends up there for a while and they said it was a lot more exciting than Rolla. I wish I had gone to college there or in Springfield instead. Rolla has got to be the most boring college town on earth...

Too bad you were a bull's fan back then. But since we're both rocket's fans now I guess its okay :). I gotta get to work now but it's great to know there's another show-me state rocket's fan on this board.

I have to say it is a very bad definition of Yao only fan though you have mentioned by yourself.

Everyone has a reason to root for a team, right? If you are born in Houston or live in houston, it is very natural to support a local team. However, for any fans outside Texas area, how can he be a rockets fan? I believe, most of them love a team because of a player, most likely a star player. In the champtionship years, many fans love rockets because of dream, you call them dream-only fan? If so, it is simple to divide fan bases as local fan and otherwise.

I said that because I did join here after yao's draft. But when you love a team, it is not good to be called a whoever-only-fan. I don't know who invent the title like YOF or SOF. In my opinion, if they root for the team, they are rockets fan right now.

There are a lot of knowledges about survey, including word selection. I suggest you make some research before posting a poll.
