Hayes has proven time and time again that hes the best rocket defender. Im sure Joey D will step up this year too, i think its a case of; Is Anderson better than Hayes and Dorsey on the defensive end? I very much doubt that he will be at least for a while. So there for we havn't made any upgrade at all!!

Does anyone get my point or am I just rambling! :)

right now we are in dire need of offensive powers.
I can only pray that the defense won't suffer but its not nr. 1 priority with our scorers out.

Nah. I don't think many have high expectations from him. I mean, no one expects him to be an All-Star or anything.

As long as he does the basics required of a big man and be "servicaeable". How much is enough is a different question.

True. He just has to play his role and try to compliment Scola's game in the low post. On Defense, the important thing is to rebound so the team can run. he would not be expected to score that much but if He does it will be a bonus.

aussie rocket, I think that most people on this BBS do not expect Andersen to be quite the player that Scola was coming over (especially in light of the informed opinions of you and others). But I, for one, would like to hear more of the positives on how you think his game translates to the NBA. If it's nothing more than a "15-20 min (max) backup level" guy, then so be it.

By no means am I expecting him to step right in and become Mehmet Okur. But I would hope that Andersen would be able to add another dimension to the Rockets' offense that it did not otherwise have. I think everyone is focusing on what David Andersen can provide in a vacuum. But that is not how basketball works, and it's not how Morey is viewing this acquisition.

Simply having Andersen stand out between the free throw line and the three-point line--doing NOTHING ELSE--will make the Rockets a better offensive team. His ability to hit mid- to long-range jumpers from the center position will open up the lane for Scola to operate or for Brooks to penetrate. Of course, he'll be a bit of a defensive liability, but I would hope that his deficiencies on that end would not totally overwhelm the benefits he brings on the offensive end.

Again, I'm not looking at Andersen as even a quality NBA starter. But I would think that he would be able to play "fifth starter's minutes" and add SOMETHING to the Rockets. His acquisition, long-term, was intended to be a backup PF/C. Let's just hope that he can be somewhat serviceable as a bottom tier starting C for a year.

Alright, since you americans are taking so much notice of what us Aussies are saying on this guy. Aussie Rocket has pretty much nailed the nail on the head. David Anderson will be a decent offensive player, but one theory i'm putting out there is, lets say Dwight is guarding him and Anderson wants to step out to the perimeter and knock down some threes... Dwight could come down and dunk all he wants, but if Anderson hits a 3 mathamatically we're up by 1 ;)
Anyway back to reality. I was kind of suprised when i saw the rockets got an Aussie on the team. Anderson has a solid jumper and i think will get some attention as the the season goes on and could work the pick and pop with AB that will be an upside, another upside is WE FINALLY HAVE ANOTHER 7' FOOTER! (who can kinda play) a downside is obviously his defense. He is going to create a mismatch (for the other team). I know i was beating around the bush but yeah DA will be a solid fit into Rick Adelmans system. Aussie rocket pretty much said it all! just thought i'd put my two bobs worth in (have my say in aussie slang) im just letting everyone know don't be dissapointed if he doesnt turn out to be a decent player!!! i know us Rockets fans always end up dissapointed!! But dont worry the pain is still felt over here in the LAND DOWN UNDER!!!

    +1

This team pushed the Lakers to 7 without TMac and Yao (well at least the later 1/2 of the series). I think most expectations for this season are low with the current roster however I still think they will still be a fun team to watch this year. I'm optimistically thinking around 43 wins (over 500) even with the current state of the team (please no more injuries). But I'm sure we will also have our share of poundings by other teams. Andersen is a bonus player, not a rebuild around the guy player. Our pre-Andersen roster had Hayes or Scola starting. I think the beginning of the season will still have one of them as the starter but it will be nice bringing someone else off the bench besides an undersized F to play C. And while I think Andersen may start in around 20 games later in the season - assuming he earns it - I don't see him as our next season starting C. Sure he might get lit up by Howard and others this year, but I don't think we are planing on a 2010 title (unless Yao and Tracy come back in time for a full force run which is highly doubtful). This will be a learning and growing experience for our role players. We just have to survive this season and give some good playing time and experience to some other players - ie do the best we can until Yao - our starting C - gets back.

Tell me you aren't that naïve. Would you not take a paycut to work for a Fortune 50 company, knowing that in 4 years, you'll be up for a job review/evaluation and have the opportunity to double/triple/quadruple your base salary from that company or one of its competitors? Or would you stay at your present, steady, unspectacular company during the prime of your life knowing all the while that they will NEVER be able to fully compensate you as well as you may be entitled to?

Sometimes in life you have to take a step back to leap forward.

verse, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. Andersen is getting paid more, in base salary alone, over in Europe. Plus, I assume that his team covers all his living expenses, house, car, etc.; plus, his taxes are likely covered by the team as well. All in all, he will NEVER make as much money in the NBA as he will in Europe. That is, unless he honestly thinks that he'll take the league by storm and become an above MLE salary-level player. Which is highly doubtful. Both in fact and even in his own mind.

As a close to 7'er with a jumpshot he will always make more than he is worth in the NBA - even with less than average defense.

His next contract will probably be MLE money (or close to it) on that fact alone.

I don't think the Rockets have extremely high expectations of Anderson. The point was to prevent having a gaping hole at the Center position. And I think the plan is to emphasize Adelman's offensive scheme more, without a particular player that it has to "flow" through. This is, potentially, what will be enjoyable/exciting for next season... a change of pace (hopefully) and looking to see "who" might blossom into something more than "they've" had the chance to be, now that there is no one obvious "go-to-guy". At least, that's what I'm looking forward to. With lowered expectations, I think one can enjoy the season -- and with less stress. (Of course, there may always be the argument -- "Tastes great." "Less filling".)

I have not seen much of Andersen. He may be a solid player and exactly what we need while Yao is out and nice backup for when he returns but I have some concerns with some of the main points of Andersen supporters.

    1. Andersen adds much needed size.
If Andersen is the poor man's Dirk or Bargnani that people suggest then I don't see how relevant his size is. If he is in fact a jump shooting big man, we've seen that these types of "bigs" struggle to use their size on smaller players (Mcgrady/Stephen Jackson defended Dirk well, Hayes on Okur, etc.). Many have also suggested that he's a poor defender/shot blocker and that he'll be used more to space the floor for Scola. If you're a poor defender and post player then you aren't using size for much other than space on a shot. Depending on how well he rebounds, you'll get better production from playing small with a wing along side Scola.

    2. His defense isn't an issue because we have Hayes.
If Andersen is a starter, he will play a lot of minutes next to Scola. Scola is now are best player and he will be playing even more minutes than he did last year so it isn't likely that we'll see Andersen play the majority of his minutes with Hayes unless he's out of the starting lineup. I'm not sure if we can maintain our stellar defense with a Scola/Andersen frontline. Without our defense what are we?

    3. If Andersen is a solid scorer and poor in other areas he is better for us than a player who is a solid rebounder and defender but a poor scorer.
This point just doesn't make sense to me. With Yao out we lose almost all of our post defense/shot blocking/intimidation. Only one person can score the ball at a time. I have no problem with the way that Brooks, Scola, Lowry, Battier, and Landry moved the ball around for scoring in the Lakers series. I understand, we don't have an offensive juggernaut but I'd rather maintain our great defense than risk it for marginal offensive upgrades. If Andersen is a sieve on D then whatever he brings on offense will be a net zero because there's no way Scola is defending the post on his own. We would get dominated in the post.

Of course, all of my views are based upon the general consensus of Andersen's skill set. If he comes out and plays like another Scola, I'm all for this move.

In one of the videos posted he hinted towards getting a better contract after he proves himself at the end of this one. If he sees this as a move to get more money in the future, I wouldn't consider it greed. If he does his job well and someone is willing to pay more for his services, he deserves it.

I'm sure Daryl Morey comes up with his Contract numbers based on the players' efficiency according to their given position and gives points accordingly. And depending on how many points a player gets, that's how much money they get.

If he was negotiating T-Mac's contract, T-Mac wouldnt have gotten more than $17-18/yr due to his injury-prone body.
