I find the story of the Da Vinci Code interesting. (Saw a documentary about it a while back.) Never read the book, though. I seriously doubt that the protesting groups, powerful as they might be, would be able to get to that many reviewers, however. Regardless of the story, if it is a bad movie, it is a bad movie. Little surprised that a Howard/Hanks combination would be that bad, but hey it happens.
Are the bad reviews because the book has some how ruined the movie? Does that make any sense? Or should I say the hype of the book is killing it? I haven't read the book yet but I do have it sitting on the shelf. I really want to see this movie and I really want to read it but I'm wondering what I should do first. See it then read it or read it then see it?
I think this may be a case of seeing the movie then reading the book. I just have a hunch that the book is better then the movie. I did read LOTR about 10 years before the three movies were released, but I throughly enjoyed seeing Middle Earth come to life.
Personally, I've always read a book before seeing the movie. (I used to read a lot, so it was often just coincidence) As long as you aren't the type who thinks the movie should be 'just like the book', I find this much better. The book is usually the source. I think it gives a better appreciation for the film.
i would read it first. ive found that is always the better route. i would say that watching a two hour movie and knowing what is coming next is better then reading hundreds of pages and knowing what will happen the whole time.
There are quite a few books out but I enjoyed readin Raymond Khourys The Last Templar. In my opinion it was better written and better researched. Its about the same religious conspiracy stuff.
Movie critics aren't there to review literature, if they do, it's by choice, if the story of a movie just really piqued they're interest that much etc. They're there for the sole purpose of reviewing a 'movie'. If the movie failed to get across, it's the movie's fault, not the critic's. If derived from a book, especially a good book, unavoidably a lot of things are going to be left out. It's the MOVIE's responsibility to be able to give the bona fide gist of it's story in a decently comprehensible, stimulating way, without drudging stale platitudes.
Figures that Hollywood would make a movie to capitalize over the mysteries of the life and death of Christ. Did they even consult with his family before doing this? Its too soon.
dont forget about da vinci's family. tom hank's family is getting all the benefits from this thing...
Ok, just saw it. Was it the best movie I've ever seen? No Was it the worst? Not even close Was it Tom Hanks's worst or best performance? Neither Do I believe or disbelieve the story? It is fiction, but I think much of the bible is too so whatever. Did it live up to the hype? What ever does? I did not leave disappointed though. What do I really think? It was a pretty good movie with an intriguing story line with enough fact sprinkled in to make you really ponder it all. I think, after reading the reviews from several sources, that there are a lot of sad people with more of an agenda than they claim this movie has. You could almost make an analogy between them and some of the characters/organizations in the book/movie. Having said all that, I think it was definitely matinee worthy IMVHO.
6.2 at IMDB Which is a good sampling of movie goers. The problem with this movie is many people will put a negative review up, because their pastor told them it was evil, thus skewing the final numbers. IMDB will average a lot of that out. Just like Serenity's loyal fan base made it rank higher than it probably would have..... DD
Great movie, but I think you need to have read the book to fully understand everything that was going on. If Dan Brown had made a book attempting to expose the Islamic faith I'm not sure he would still be alive.
Actually, I've heard the opposite about IMDB. The producers of some movies will send PAs to the site to give perfect scores and artificially inflate a movie's rating...
Sure but expectations cloud your judgement of movies. If these guys heard there was this big "to do" over this book turned movie they may go in expecting something completely different. That affects their overall opinion of the movie.
Just got back from watching it. It was good..not great, but good. A little long, and it drags at times, but kept me involved for most of the movie. I know its fiction and all, but I can see how the catholic church is concerned about this movie..it really lays some thought provoking stuff.
Just got back from the movie. Not the best in the world, but it was worth the price of admission (which was 8.25). Same criticism of most action/mystery books that have been transformed into movies: sometimes a bit too jumpy. I loved the mix of discovery channel meets car chase though. The movie seemed to go over the top trying to get the point across that this is all a myth and you need to believe what you want to believe. I'm a christian, but i didn't really think there was much of anything to get offended about. It was an entertaining book and and entertaining movie. Nobody's taking home any awards for this one, but hey . . . were you expecting tom hanks to walk away from this with another best actor? i think not. go see the movie. you'll like it.
yea i liked it too, definitely go watch it. But its not one of those movies you'll ever watch more than once; the movie was just about figuring out one puzzle after another, it seemed like. It's like they packed so much stuff into the movie so as to perhaps follow the book. (i never read the book).
