That is odd in football. I don't know of anyone who's collapsed like this. AFAIK, he's had no major injuries to blame for his dropoff. The coaching staff stayed the same. The defensive scheme stayed the same. I don't know what the reason could be.

In baseball it seems like sudden dropoffs like this are more common.

I'm gonna ask a question I haven't seen answered in an insightful way yet this year by anyone. Football-wise, why the dropoff?

Maybe he can move back to TE.

It is weird how little he's done. But the good news is that the texans can resign him for cheaper if it comes to that because I do think he can be a productive player

This. I'd rather be able to resign him for cheap than have to spend a high draft pick replacing him. Although if he finishes up the year strong, I could see some team taking a chance and overpaying him.

Barwin is sucking in a contract year and we're still winning.

This is a god-send. We already know he can play.

He's gonna resign cheap and we can use that draft pick elsewhere.

Actually he is a Detroit fan, which considering their sports history might explain the drop. I mean he had a promising rookie season coming in on passing downs at DE, looked great the first game of his second year only to get injured for the rest of it in the same game. Third year, played great at both LB positions and now he's struggling. Sounds like a Detroit sports product to me.

But in all honesty, he hasn't had the best season creating pressure but coverage wise, he is our best linebacker. Which is a problem because he drops off into coverage now more because we need him to, although his lack of production and Mercilus actual production in the same spot, does paint a picture that doesn't make him look good.

I'd actually would like to see him return next season (with either himself or Reed coming off the bench) to shore up our OLBs but given the likelihood of another cap crunch scenario and other more productive players also having contract issues that might not work out.

at this point i almost think it's part of an elaborate ruse of his to ensure he gets to stay in houston. the dude loves this city and has become quite the ambassador for htown. i'd like to think that he's purposely playing poorly so that we can afford to keep him.

    ya, that's the ticket.

The question is . . . does he return o form
    or
Is this the Conner Barwin he will be for the rest of his career?

Doubtful he resigns unless he wants to sit on the bench. My guess is it will be Mercilus and Reed as starters next season.

Some other team will likely be willing to pay a little more than the Texans hoping that Barwin can return to his 11 sack form from the previous season.

Antonio Smith is doing fine, in fact not that I wouldn't want Cody upgraded, but I am fine with the front 3 overall. It is the OLB that are suppose to be doing the pressure. And we aren't getting anything there. ..it is frustrating. Because this is the same system that Demarcus Ware flourished in at OLB with sacks, and it's tough to understand

I wouldn't be suprised if down the road we hear about a pending PED case that's being appealled.

Kind of like Cushings ordeal, except Cush didn't have the huge dropoff. More like Shawne Merriman.

The secondary is bad enough, and a pathetic pass rush makes them that much worse. Barwin is not doing anything, at least not sackwise. Brooks Reed is not that much better, if he is better at all. The rookie Mercilus got lucky and got some unblocked sacks. I'm not sure about him either. The Texans will probably be one and done in the playoffs, and then back to mediocre. I hope I am wrong, but that's what it looks like to me.
