I didn't hear those rumors. Were these rumors prior to him publicly announcing being HIV positive or after?
I'm not sure I understand what that has to do with being gay. Are you implying that only "soft" white people will get down on their knees? Hate to ruin your parade, but black people are gay too. And it's not because they're white inside. It's because they like hugging and kissing men. Has nothing to do with skin color.
I can see your point on the showering. But I wouldn't reduce the problems gay people go through to 'making other people feel uncomfortable.' Unfortunately in this day and age, people who are openly gay still run the risk of violent attacks (depending on where you are), among other things.
Not what I meant. His partying was indeed well known. The rumors of him being "BI" before the HIV revelation is complete news to me. IMO, these so-called rumors came out afterwards, as a result of his HIV.
He may try to cover up his prejudices and homophobia as otherwise, but it's transparent. Everyone's responses to him were pretty funny, but I think it's better off to just have him on your ignore list from now on. There's no point in even listening to someone so ignorant. And just because 'plenty of people share your opinion' only makes it worst. I don't even want to come up with the obvious examples in history. Don't bother replying, I won't see it from now on.
Great, confusing good diction, grammar and proper pronunciation with whiteness. Any wonder why our IQ and standardized test scores, reading proficiency and earning potential are a whole standard deviation lower than Caucasians?
Interesting thread and considering how big of a deal is being made out of this it shows how far our culture has to go towards accepting homosexuality or bi-sexuality. As for heterosexual athletes nervous about showing with gay athletes if you have worked out and showered at a decent sized gym you've probably showered with someone who was gay or bisexual already. I believe statistics say that between 1%-5% of people are gay. Not sure about bi-sexual but I would guess that the numbers of people who have had sexual encouters with the same sex are probably even higher. So by statistics if you've been in a shower with at least 100 different random men you've probably showered with at least one. There certainly might be some tensions with knowingly showering with someone who is gay but that tension is going to be caused by the people who have a problem with gays. I'm not naive enough to think that there aren't straight pro-athletes will have a problem with openly gay teamates but this is one area that familiarity will reduce that.
It's funny you should say that. I was pleased as hell to see there has only been one really blatantly homophobic reaction to this subject (that one being by KAS13) - and no less than a half a dozen people have made fun of him for his homophobia. I mean, this is a sports fan site. Sports hasn't traditionally been any sort of haven for the left minded. Further, it's a sports fan site for a team based in Houston, TX. Houston is known for being one of the more conservative big cities in the country. And still, there is really just KAS13 making homophobic remarks. So yeah, I think it's interesting that you read this thread and think of how far we have to go when I'm looking at the same thread and thinking it's amazing how far we've come. Because quite honestly, bigotry can't be stopped. It will always exist. The best you can hope for is that it won't be socially acceptable. Well, it's clear this BBS, dedicated to a Houston based sports team, doesn't find it socially acceptable. That really says something.
Of course, but that doesn't mean there aren't lessons to be learned. An enlightened one comfortable with his sexuality? The racial hatred was/is real as well. Doesn't mean homophobics are right.
A small but significant % of the population is gay. This isn't limited to effiminate metrosexuals. It's not exactly going out on a limb to say that there are probably several homosexuals in the NBA. And in the NFL, MLB, MLS, and NHL. They're way, way in the closet, but the bigger surprise would be if there were not. This story? Who the hell knows.
i don't know about other sports but it would be fun to play: "who's gay in the nba?" lol first answer.... RUDY G.
Like I said, I'll let you guys have a field day with it. I'm not going to say anything back. Are you going to be at LIVE is the real question. Anyone can run their mouth, let's see if you will hide behind your moniter. The best part about it is if you show you will have no clue who I am, it will be easy to find out who you are. No insults, let's just see what happens on the next get together.
I already TOLD you I'd be there. I'll be the stud waitng for you in the bathroom KAS13. If you're a real man you'll come and then put your money where your mouth is. Until then, hope you don't have to guard any gay guys. I want you to stay fresh....
