Tmac was always a plus defender.. had some lazy D in Orlando towards the end of his time there. JVG got him motivated defensively again and got him more on the team defense page
Patrick Ewing's baseline fadeaway jumper was unstoppable. Dwight is nowhere near the vacinity of Ewing offensively.
JVG isn't a very good offensive coach, but as long as he could somehow reign in Harden's ISO crap, that might be good enough. Offense isn't this team's problem most nights(3-point shooting notwithstanding). They're not playing good defense. And if there's one area JVG would immediately turn things around, it's on that end of the floor. I'd prefer George Karl, but Jeff Van Gundy would still be a major upgrade over McFail.
God, I hated JVG as a coach. Terrible terrible offense. If you are going to hire someone, go get George Karl.
Perfect example of someone letting they're personal likeability of a player/coach cloud how stupid their idea is. JVG coaching will be have scoring 80's points a game with our possessions per game dropping by 30. We would get destroyed against teams with multiple options like the Clippers. Simply put, JVG is a fantastic defensive coach who knows nothing of offense. Terrible thread FYI Jeremy Lin wouldn't last 5 games playin under JVG
terrible post.. you're accusing me of having personal bias in this post. I have nothing against McHale.. he's a bad coach. that's it.
JVG was a great coach. He got the most out of his players. He helped Yao become a dominant force inside. He motivated T-mac to play with more heart than the guy ever played with on both ends of the court. He did all he could with that cast of scrubs around those guys. If he had a healthy Sura and Howard he would have gotten past the first round for sure. That team just had way too many crappy players on it. Your offense is going to look bad when you don't have a power forward, your starting small forward is Battier, and your starting pg is Rafer Alston.
Yeah, JVG would be great... but Harden and Howard would throw a temper tantrum... it would ruin the "fun"
Clutchfans hated JVG, just as they will hate any future coach. Fire Van Gundy http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=114563&highlight=fire+gundy http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=138282&highlight=fire+gundy http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=105388&highlight=fire+gundy http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=87744&highlight=fire+gundy http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=87787&highlight=fire+gundy
i'm not an alarmist; so my support for rehiring JVG is not related to the few games we've played this season. As luke warm as i am about McHale, he did a great job last year. ...but JVG would have this team playing the best defense in the league. And since we don't really have any semblance of an organized offense, his coaching philosophy would blend in well with what we are already doing. Love that man!
tmac got jvg fired, he guaranteed 'its on me' but didn't deliver. they wanted a more motion based team where the offense isn't two players so they went to rick. the jvg teams had some boring basketball.
