It was a combination of problems with Pippen. He played poorly, but what ultimately turned many fans against him was his feud with Barkley. It was as though he was blaming another player for his mistakes, which isn't the type of behavior anyone wants to see from a supposed team leader.
Rudy was quoted frustrated and exasperated that he had never worked so hard to get a guy involved, settled, happy as he did with Pip. Was it Barkley or Pippen or their combined synergism which imploded the great Rox 90s and turned it into the horrific 00s? This year, finally after 10 seasons, the Good Guys stand to win a p/o series, perhaps to make some spring time noise.
You people act as if Pippen was still young. He is 41 for crying out loud. I know he has worked out and thinks of himself as pretty fast still, but goodness, he probably lost all his quickness so how do you expect him to be a good perimeter defender?
I guess you haven't being a Rockets fan for that long. Next thing you'll tell me you think Jerr Sloan is a good coach and the Spazz are respectable.
That was a good interview. Mike & Mad Dog did a great job bringing out the best of JVG. JVG sounded excited at times. 610 Sports should use this as a model on how to conduct an interview.
Whaddya say, fellas? How about a couple dozen of us take Scottie out back and see if he's up to it. My guess is that the old groin, teeth, and ribs ain't what they used to be.
Guys, pippen has turned over a new leaf. He's not the insecure, inferiority complex ridden jerkoff he's always been.... Yup, that's the Scottie we know and love all right........
Even though we got rid of Quitten, that trade with Portland sucked, we should have asked for Jermaine O'neal.
Sherlock, The pet peeve is the wearing down of the players because the Coach is not: a) Trying out V-Span b) Playing Snyder c) Shortening the bench way too much during the year.
No, not exactly. I've been a huge fan since the early 90s, but I was too young to care about all that was said in the media at the time. I knew that Pippen didn't deliver for us on the court but a lot of you make it seem like he had a bad attitude off the court while he was here. I don't really remember the whole Pippen vs. Barkley feud.
We tend to hate Scottie Pippen around here because of the issues he's had with Charles Barkley. Charles is no fan of the Houston Rockets. Why on earth would we not want to give Scottie a second chance. That a-- of a man, Charles, can't ruin this for us. It's been years since that happened. Bring on Pip. He is our backup PG if healthy.
Come on Almu, Will's post was pretty funny. Think of the context: JVG wants to test his durability. It's funny. I'm sure Will would cheer for Scottie if we actually signed him. Rocket loyalty runs deep. I hated Charles until he played for us, then loved him, now hate him again. But... I must say I'm glad to see that CB4 beat the ref... that would have been sad to see a HOFer get beat by a 67 yo ref in a foot race.
I think I was like 12 at the time and this is basically what I remembered. Barkley took less money (I think it might even be the minimum) that season so the Rockets can be under cap enough to get Pippen. Pippen had trouble fitting into the offense that was inside out, averaged around 14ppg but still show signs of being a good player and imo, did have an all around game that made a difference night in and night out (kind of like Battier, but with more game). The Rockets limped the regular season due to having such an old roster made a playoffs as a dangerous low seed against the Lakers in the first round. Since I was kind of young myself and almost then years ago, I don't remember all the details exactly, but here's what I disliked. Pippen was the one that ended our season, we were up by 2 with the ball and very little time remaining on the clock, he turned the ball over, Lakers end up winning, and he blamed Cuttino Mobley (the rookie!!!) on the loss. In the offseason, he called Barkley (the guy that took a paycut so he can sign with us) fat, cried and moaned to the media so he can force his way out of town to what was the most talented team in the league (the Blazers). If anyone remember that Blazer team, it was like the Mavs team of today. Completely loaded and deep with a rich owner in Paul Allen. Also we got essentially hosed in that trade because of his public outcry, getting Stacy Augmon (who basically didn't even try during training camp because Blazer told him he would be re-signed by them if he got cut by the Rockets), Kelvin Cato, and 2 other players that were of no significance so I don't remember (maybe Carlos Rogers was one). The details are a little muddy now, but the hate is still there.
We hate Scottie because he was a horrible person that b!tched his way out of the town. The "feud" with Barkley was just the tool he used to get his way to what he thought was going to be his chance of winning the ring w/o Michael.
Great interview, loved it. I must have missed what you are talking about, I thought it was outstanding, thanks for posting it. DD
People hate Snottie Quitten because he is a little b**** that quit the team after only a single season with the Rox (a good season for the team too, 4th in the West), blamed all of his failings on other players (including the Chuckwagon who took the vet minimum of 1 million dollars so Snottie could get his 16 million) and b****ed so loud to the media that the best deal we could get for him was Kelvin Cato, Walt Williams, Stacey Augmon, Ed Gray, Brian Shaw and Carlos Rogers. Three of those guys never played for the Rockets, Cato got a fat extension and then loafed for the rest of his career, and Rogers and the Wizard were mediocre at best. The year before Snottie arrived the Rox played the WC champs tough until Barkley injured his arm. The year before that they got screwed out of a trip to the finals when Clyde was bear-hugged by Malone with no call. After being at that high level Snottie torpedoed the team and they were out of the playoffs for 4 seasons. Last season was the first season that we had a winning percentage equal to that from 1999.
