Though Battier should of seen that his man was sagging off of him to semi double Yao, and probably should of cleared that corner by running the baseline to create spacing, that plays fault was strickly AB's.

Plain and simple, he panicked. He knew he had to get Yao the ball, and when there was no way to get it there, he got lost.

If he would of zipped a pass Battier in the corner, at least they could of established a post entry from the corner through Battier.

I was more dumbfounded by the the Hayes move also. That play where stucket split the D and ran into an open lane was a terrible decision by Hayes in running too far out to trap leaving the lane wide open.

But I'll take a win any day of the week. Even if it was against a sub 500 team, at our home, without their three best players, and it only took two overtimes.

    Yuck.

We haven't had a lot of success because our best triple threat player is brooks and I'm not sure coach trust him enough to do it. Personally, I would run a 1-4 high and put barry in 1 corner and wafer in the other and yao-artest at the ft line. With about 8 secs, I would sink the Yao and Artest to the baseline and let aaron break his man down.

that play was money! i thought it was under jeff though?

they inbounded to yao who held it up top while francis came left, over the pick and shot the straightaway three. it was shockingly efficient.

Subbing Hayes in for defense is the right move. Hayes just overplayed the help off the pick and Stuckey made a great split move. The execution needs to be there, but the personnel is correct for that situation. Yao has not shown and rotated on D for like at least 3 years. Yao is too slow to do that and/or switch and offenses take advantage of that way too much in critical situations.

I understand that Yao is good at laying back and protecting the lane, but in late game scenarios, you play defense slightly different (like switching on screens) and Yao limits what you can do and puts the Rockets in a position where their best defense against a good offensive play is the Hope-They-Miss defense instead of the Make-Them-Miss defense. So I agree with the substitution, but they just need to work on the execution.

Offensively, I do understand that it's a mess, but you guys need to realize that while the Rockets are getting by with inconsistent but effective offense, they're still a year away in my opinion from running Adleman's system. It's like they go through the motions but they're still not understanding the openings. The lanes are there, the passes are make-able, but players aren't having the foresight, awareness, and confidence to make the play.

The late game problem should be much better by next year. If it isn't, then the personnel really has to change. Lowry seems to be grasping things really fast though.

As for the pick and pop Francis-Yao play. I love it. Maybe it should be Ron Artest running that. Yao is a really wide body and a really good screen setter. At least that will give you a decent look. They also run a lot of Wafer catch and shoots out of time-outs, but he's usually not in end of game lineups. But yeah...I do agree that there are things that can be immediately remedied specifically to end of game offense, because these sets are failing at too high of a rate.

The intent is to switch every pick and roll, no matter which big is involved.

Can't do that with Yao on the floor.

Hayes did overpursue and gave up that drive to stuckey...but give credit where credit is due, that was a pretty spectacular move by Stuckey to split that trap.

The idea with Hayes is to prevent the wide open 3's/jumpers that opposing teams get because of Yao's inability to pursue up out of the paint. Hayes' defensive quickness also allows a switch if our other guy gets really hung up on the screen.

I know it didn't work this time, but honestly i'd rather have an opposing pg try to split a trap with an awkward off-hand dribble through a guy who is a charge taking expert and then have to make a double-clutch-partially blocked-layup over scola then have a wide open 18 foot jumper.

Hayes is too short to play C. If you wanted a stop you put Hayes at pf and Mutombo at C, and sub in Lowry at pg. That way Battier, Artest and Hayes can switch on sf, sg and pf with ease. That's the "different look" you use, not Hayes at C because it leaves the court wide open for slashes inside the paint.

The more I see Adelman "coach", the more I appreciate the time we had JVG here. A lot of us said he didn't know how to coach an offense, but I look at the talent he had then and the talent we have now and it boggles me how JVG could have created an offense at all with Juwan Howard, Chuck Hayes, Ryan Bowen and Rafer Alston, and at least our defense was top notch to compensate for it somewhat. On the other hand, Rick Adelman has been blessed with Carl Landry, Luis Scola, Lowry, Brooks and Artest and Wafer and our offense still looks like crap.

If it weren't for Morey doing such a great job getting such good players, we'd probably be in the lottery right now. Adelman's contract can't expire enough, if you ask me.

Agreed, I throw up when I see no hop Chuck come in the game and get crossed over on a PnR and watch as credit card vertical Scola come over and give up a layup. I would put both Yao and Deke in the game along with Shane, Artest, and Lowry. You may get by Yao but you won't get by Deke.

Let's agree all of that happens and Chuck get's the rebound instead of Yao or Deke. He gets fouled immediately and misses 2 free throws. The smarter coaches, like the teams ahead of us and Jerry Sloan know this and will use this to their advantage in the playoffs.

They always use the same play everytime and cannot execute it. Its get the ball to Yao if you can't, give it to Ron who will stumble around and jack one up.

i've always thought it was rudy. thinking about it, i know we did it against the wizards when jordan was playing for them (cuttino got it on the only time we ran option B on the play which was cuttino running off a pick on the left side of the court) and i'm pretty sure jordan stopped playing in 2002-2003 and that was yao's first year so it would have been rudy.

i remember only the second time we ran it was against miami and brian grant clearly knew the play but he still ended up backing off francis at the last second and let him get off a 3 to tie it. i don't think we ever won anything on those shots, but it worked at least 4 different times to tie the game. francis 3 times and mobley once. i think i even remember the teams being memphis, miami, lakers, and wizards. i don't know why i remember that. i should use that power for good.

Deke would've blocked that layup. At worst, he would get called for a foul where Stuckey might miss a FT or 2.

exactly my man....u just proved the point.........

against a perimeter oriented team that sucks yao out of the paint and is shooting jumpshots at a high clip.....i agree sub hayes.......to stop 3's and jumpers

but last night we got a heavy dose of a drive the lane split the defense offense from the pistons in which at that point your priority as a coach should be to close off the lane.......they werent hittin there jumpers last night, thank goodness, outside of affalo.....

stucky and that bynum kid are penetrators and finishers around the rim exclusively........they cant shoot........and they were doing the same play over and over and over again......lane dive plays to the bucket.....so in that instance u gotta keep yao or a deke in to guard the lane....
