A better topic of discussion would be (I don't feel like creating a third thread on the topic): What can be done to curtail gang activity and gang violence? http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,981460,00.html http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,981434,00.html Both the above are from the 1994 Time Magazine issue whose front cover is posted in the Hangout thread. Basically it emphasizes how these kids are raised through horrible parenting->grow up to become psychopaths/gang bangers. Short of the government physically displacing these kids from a very early age away from their crack addict parents or forced birth control to prevent 15 yr old girls from having babies (extreme/distopic solution but it would work), there's nothing you can do with the present system to fix this problem. The inner city school systems are broke and can't afford to have after-school programs, not enough teachers that earn the kids respect, etc.
Individualized mentoring and/or counseling, round-the-clock academic and extracurricular opportunities; and some kind of socio-economic diversification of their peer group: to keep them from feeling so isolated and outmatched that they develop these demented support groups.
I don't know about all that. At my university (Prairie View), we're all saying how messed up it was. No one thinks it's "freakin cool".
I think he's referring more to gangs, cartels, dealers fighting for turf, doing deals, killing and murdering, controlling the streets, intimidating, etc.
If they are ****ed up in the head, sure. Kids don't need to be sheltered from this stuff, if their parents are decent.
Nice one dude, where can I get some of that koolaid? What do you think the purposes of gangs are, to sell bootleg DVD players out of the back of a van? The illegal drug industry is a big, big market, and if drugs become legal, the turf wars and violence goes down immensely.
Do you think our recent government has spent more on schooling/education or police/military? You reap what you sow.
You need to watch a documentary I saw on Showtime. If I'm not mistaken, it's called "American Drug War: The Last White Hope". Truly eye-opening documentary. mar1juana user rate among teens and adults is lower in the Netherlands than here. The US needs to focus on prescription drugs and other hard-core drugs. Heck, even alcohol is a way bigger problem. Anyways, I think this video serves as a wake-up call to all parents. Not sure what the parents of this victim could have done to avoid the situation, but as a bystander I would have kept a very safe distance.
Actually, the family wanted people to see this so they can identify the guys that did this to him; if it upsets you, don't watch it, but there are people out there that wants to watch it so they can see who it is and that they might possibly know the people......
