Asik quit on the team for 2 games and is a top 3 defensive center subjected to bench minutes. Too much kool-aid drinking on here regarding Asik. We will be lucky to get 75 cents on the $1.
Young has a player option, which he might take, and Turner and Hawes are both going to be FAs who probably wouldn't stick around. None of these players are good fits, because of this.
Turner would be restricted. Young's player option probably isn't as big a deal now that the Rockets have Harden and Howard.
Lowry got traded cause was a cancer here and now Toronto don't want him. Kevin wanted him gone.! Have you not need rocket fan long?
Was bored last night, and went back and watched the last couple of 76ers games to get an idea about what Young brings to the table. Couple of notes- -The Sixers are unsurprisingly a carbon copy of the Rockets, and Brett Brown can coach... just dont have the talent the Rockets have to score as often in this offensive system. If they are able to bring in even just one super-talented offensive player this year or next, I think they are a playoff team in the East. They just need another talented play-maker probably from the wing. -Thad Young.... hmmm... I hate comparing NBA players but man, he is almost identical to the Terrence Jones we have seen as of late. The differences are he's a little more disciplined on the defensive end, and his range is more around 18 feet than out to the 3 point line (even though I'm not exactly sold on Jones as a long-term 3 point threat just yet). Long story short, I don't see much of an upgrade long term with starting Young and moving Jones to the bench. Only thing this trade would do IMO is add depth, and completely knock the Rockets out of the running for free agency in 2015 with Young's contract. Their only options for upgrading significantly beyond that point would be through trade. -Asik for the Sixers- I think that team already has the potential to be a top flight defensive team with good defense and decent length/athleticism at virtually every position. Having major upgraded rim protection moving forward will help them get out on the break faster. on offense, they would miss Hawes' spacing when he's not on the court, but if they are able to keep him coming off the bench, I think they have a very nice center rotation with those two. Having Asik long term would probably be the most beneficial to Nerlens Noel as I would think they view him as their #1 upside young player who has Anthony Davis like size and athleticism, but slender build. Over time, I foresee this team being a very good defensive team either way, but Asik makes them elite IMO. My major question mark for them is how will they score without an elite offensive player on their team. Turner has been their best playmaker and MCW has had some great rookie moments so we will see. If I'm Hinkie, I do this deal all day every day. If I'm Morey, I probably dont unless I can get a good draft pick in the deal that would help entice a trade later on which would almost certainly be on the docket. This team wouldn't yet be finished. I know that Hinkie is going to be super stingy with his draft picks so I have a hard time seeing this deal getting done.
I think the only real question with Philly is what would it take to get Hawes. Obviously they're looking for a pick. Would they take a young player on a rookie deal for him instead of the pick? They're NOT going to get a lottery pick for Hawes or even close. So is Hawes worth a late 2014 first rounder??? If so, I can see a deal being done with Asik that yields Hawes...that is with Asik going elsewhere for picks and a contract and DMo or possibly our 14 first rounder going to Philly for Hawes.
It may be realistic but it should be Rondo or bust. Thad Young won't make the difference we need to win the ship. Rondo would. My only concern would be that with the serious/intense attitude that Rondo brings to the game.... Will that mesh with the jovial Dwight and chillaxed Harden? Time would tell...
Great points. Loved the analysis. To counter, I would say that I'm not trying to replace Terrence Jones at the 4. I view Thad Young as someone that can be your 4th best player, one that would provide flexibility at the 2,3, or 4. He is basically a quicker/lighter version of Terrence Jones that's more advanced in his skill set. He will be used to guard smaller PFs or SF/SGs. If we can keep Asik, I am ALL FOR IT, since 15 minutes of elite defense at the C spot trumps anything addition that Thad Young can provide. However, if our hand was forced, I don't see a better option out there. Morey is trying to win NOW, so I'm not so worried about adding draft picks, if the player we've adding can be our 4th best player.
Why say no to Rondo? He can't shoot AND needs the ball in his hands. Think about this. How does our team work right now? Harden and Parsons are the primary ball handlers for this team. Harden + Lin are very effective at pick and rolls and we should use this as much as possible. Parsons is basically a point forward and we can run our offense smoothly through this. If you add Rondo in there, you will DECREASE FLOOR SPACING, which is essential to our success. You've seen how having 2 people that can't shoot wouldn't work. Howard + Rondo will limit you a lot offensively more than anything. If you have great spot up shooters, Rondo is a GREAT FIT. We're not that type of team. Even though he is a play maker, I don't see the positives outweighing the negatives. People just don't look at this aspect. You can't just put all this talent together without role players. Look at the nets! Would I go for a Rondo trade? Maybe. But I just don't know if that's the best way to improve our team since he'll create spacing problems for Harden and Parsons.
Nice. Only thing I would question/add is having Thad around would give us a stronger option for the second unit. Whether that be Jones or Thad, its an option we don't currently have for the 2nd unit. Not saying this makes the deal worth doing, especially as you point out that getting a draft pick back is unlikely.
rondo will get the ball out of Harden's hand down the stretch...his playmaking ability will make Dwight avg 24 ppg and will make Harden's life MUCH easier.
Yeah like I mentioned the thing that is most appealing about this deal is the depth and athleticism added to the rotation. I think defensively this team gets better with him and I think he can step over and guard alot of elite SF's as well. I do think there is value in bringing in Young, and he does upgrade the team slightly with added depth, versatility, and athleticism, but it comes at a price... which is lack of flexibility to upgrade bigger and bolder.... that is unless you get a good draft pick in the deal. The Rockets first rounders just wont have that much value in the near future to sweeten a big deal around Lin or Young in the future. If they have big plans on the horizon between now and the Summer of 2015, getting a pick for Asik now is imperative. Keeping Asik at this point just isn't going to happen. Sorry. If you think you've seen Asik upset and mopey so far this season you haven't seen anything yet if the Rockets pass the trade deadline and fail to move him. The Rockets are going to have to cut their losses with him sooner or later. Might as well get value for him while you can. I'm in the boat that as good as Asik would be 100% bought in to the team winning, 95% of a checked out Asik will do more damage than good moving forward. If he's not bought into what they are trying to do here (and by all accounts its a definite NO), he's got to go.
Asik has go to go, he don't even try no more. Plus he's b**** face syndrome is worse. Rondo would be nice if Harden continues to ISO. Other than that we are fine right now.
