The same inept play calling that gave Arian Foster the ball only 15 times when he was averaging 7 yards a carry vs. the Colts. Kubiak's play calling and/or game management costs this team 2-3 wins per year. It is inexcusable, especially 5 years in.
their defense was better for the second half of the season (which is where they won) but early on, they were also on a historical bad pace. the problem really hasnt varied that much. If the Texans can play decent defense they have a good chance to win.
this... A big problem imo is the inability of the coaching staff to adjust on the fly....its almost like they come into games very robotically and dont know how to "reprogram" themselves once the game has started
Don't see how you come to that conclusion. Their offense has been much better after second half adjustments.
do u think they make adjustments with the hopes of keeping the game close or winning? Also, halftime is not the ONLY time you are allowed to make adjustments.....hell, some teams seem to make them inbetween series' and change the gameplan within minutes
One thing in particular that Kubes does A LOT is running 5 yard pass plays on 3rd down and long. He too often calls 3rd down plays in capable of getting a 1st down
Why in his 5 years here, has Kubiak still not improved with his clock management? Using your first timeout on offense with 3+ minutes left??? AND 3rd and 19!
2-3 wins is a bit much. the colts was a debacle and a horrible scheme. But Kube's (for better or worse) isnt the one play calling/managing the defense and that's where this teams biggest fault is this year. I understand that he has schemed badly at times and has had shaky game management but he still manages to field one of the better offenses in the league. Yes they stall at times but all offenses do at some point. I just find it difficult to be blaming Kube's game management for these losses when the most obvious and glaring issue is the defense.
Frank Bush made adjustments during the 2nd half. He blitzed the hell out of vick in the 3rd, knocked him his ass and held him in check. Then in the 4th, he went back to what failed miserably in the first half.
I'm not pro-Kubiak by any stretch; but I see/read this a lot and it's unfortunately an empty claim, IMO. More accurate to say his playcalling cost his team *a chance* to *potentially* win 2-3 games this year. (Which I would disagree with, too – I think there’s one game – the Colt Monday Nighter - where his playcalling was indefensible.) You can't just assume better playcalling would produce favorable results. Maybe running Foster more against the Colts leads to him getting hurt; or he puts the ball on the ground. Or maybe the Colts find a way to adjust and stop him. You can't just assume they would have won a game against one of the NFL's all-time historically great regular season teams on the road. And, again – I’m not defending Kubiak, in terms of arguing he should keep his job: But I think a lot of fans are so insular, so hyper-focused on their own team that they’re unaware of how often *other* head coaches – even good head coaches – make mistakes. With better defensive personnel and coaches, I think the Texans are alone in first place in the division. I think had some of the players (on both sides) stepped up and made plays, they would have made the playoffs last year and would be on pace to make them again this year. I think Kubiak, in terms of in-game coaching, does a lot more right than wrong. He’s not perfect; he’ll have games where he absolutely is outcoached. But he’s had games where he’s absolutely outcoached his opponent, too. Kubiak the general manager is where I think he’s more often failed, and failed pretty consistently.
Damnit this is too true. It's like he watches the Pats and tries to copy that now. With the routes they're running, you can't just expect the YAC like he does. All these short dumps and WR screens, and Schaub still misthrows or has to make the receiver adjust to catch. This is where I miss Kyle Shanahan the most.
Well....they Easgles only touched the ball 2 times in the 3rd quarter.....the first drive ended in a nice pick down the sideline by Allen.....the second drive that started in the 3rd quarter ended in a TD...so while they did not let the Eagles score in the 3rd qtr, it wasnt necessarily due to a great job of adjusting on defense....the credit goes more to the offense for controlling the ball/clock
This blew my mind, not sure why he stopped. Vick was getting hit to the point where he was getting up slower and slower each time but all of a sudden he stopped. Lets take out the Schaub INT at the end of the 1st half ,because that put the "D" in a horrible spot, the defense gave up only 17 points to the Eagles through 3 qtrs.
I'm all ears. I think the critical "drive" last night where Foster had zero touches, for example, is indefensible. Why does inexplicably abandon the run??
http://www.nfl.com/videos/houston-texans/09000d5d81c9a110/Eagles-defense-4th-down-failed video here, the ball bounces off Walter's arm, are you still gonna tell me that was not catchable?
Last year, in the 2nd half of the season, they lost games 20-17, 20-17, and 23-18. Even when their defense was better (not great, but better), they were still finding ways to lose. (on a side note, despite the better defense, in the second half of the season, they went 4-4. In the first half, they went 5-3.) I agree that the defense is the problem, but it seems like when they fix that problem, something different just crops up.
