I wouldn't mind holding serve until 2014 and seeing our guys continue to develop, if it turns out Morey can't nail his target, whoever the hell that happens to be. I would like to keep Delfino, if that's possible without messing too much with our summer moves or our 2014 caproom. I think we need to see just what Donatas, Robinson, and Jones can do at the 4, that's if one or more aren't included in the deal for that presumptive "target." I'm fine with our starting point, our shooting guard, obviously, Parsons at the 3, and Asik. We could use an athletic wing with length off the bench that's a defensive specialist. We could use a solid backup 5. I'll decide if Beverly is a solution as the backup point by the end of the season. The jury is out on him, IMO. He has a lot to prove and hasn't done it yet, by any means. Hey, we have a terrific young team with a great future, doing a hell of a lot better than we have any right to expect, despite the predictable melodrama whenever there's a loss, or if a coach makes some comment taken out of context. Maybe it's time to let some of our "assets" grow into their roles and capabilities. We're pretty ****ing lucky, people. I think there are a heck of a lot of coaches and GM's in the league that would like to be in McHale's and Morey's shoes right now. Except for the mad slug in the Valley, we've got a great bunch of guys. The Rockets are going to need more quality depth if we're going to keep playing at this pace, and we probably are going to keep playing at this pace for at least the next couple of seasons, in my opinion, so I hope Morey addresses that. All the angst and hair pulling I constantly see in the GARM bemuses me. We should be happy. Before the summer moves, all I could see was a fog of uncertainty. We have a future now, so cheer up!
Filling up the perfect 2nd superstar is not going to be easy. As rockets would want a young player who will grow with the team, but for such players, they are all locked up for the next few years. Any 3rd wheel that is showing potential?
I think it's pretty safe to say DM will not blow the cap space on just any decent mid level free agent. Realistically, DM has only a couple of years to get that 2nd superstar with out giving up major assets in free agency. Chandler will be due a hefty raise in a couple of years and both Lin and Asik will come up on new contracts as well.
Lebron has a player option after next year. He likes playing with good teams. Shoot for the stars and if you don't get the player of your dreams, wait a year. Wade will likely been on his way down seeing a lot of his game depends on his decreasing athletic ability. He'll be 33 by that time. Not old, but certainly an age where you see most decline some.
Def go for Howard (and obviously inquire about CP3 but let's get real), and if we strike out we obtain Gasol. LA will likely amnesty him if they keep Howard so we should be able to claim him (or trade for him with a lowball deal, LA just wants to be rid of his contract). His contract ends the next year, where we can go all in on LeBron/Bosh/whoever.
Dwight or CP3 at the max would be no-brainers, but are unlikely to happen. I would only want a guy like Josh Smith or Paul Millsap if we got a bargain deal. Say $8-10M or so? Potentially there could be some trade targets coming available, you never know when Morey is going to pull some magic. Kevin Love would be great for example. But could be somebody else too maybe? You can't even really know for sure who will be made available, but I'm sure Morey will be prepared to pounce for the right guy. Barring those three overall possibilities panning out, I think doing nothing is a reasonable alternative. Obviously adding LeBron would make us a championship contender after next season, but I actually think Bosh would be a great fit and he would make us title contenders as well if we got him instead. Or maybe Lin, Parsons, D-Mo, or Robinson develops into a budding all-star. Who knows!
How about Al Jefferson for one year at his max, which is probably close to 18 million? Keeps us in the LMA / Love hunt but makes better next year.
I just hate signing a player with max. contract, but he can't fit in the team. Look at the Knicks and Lakers.
I hope people realize we won't get a superstar based on positional need, but we'll get which ever one we can. A superstar pf sounds awesome but I highly doubt Morey is planning his moves/roster around that.
You want to pass on adding a superstar for nothing so Lin and Parsons can learn...huh? I'm glad you're not our GM. If Dwight's available, Morey will offer him a contract in a second, as he should. Jefferson will get much more than $18 million next year.
Patience and continued development of our young players may be the most prudent move. I'm interested to see what our new German Center has as a back-up. I believe DMo can be our starting PF, but T-Rob, T-Jo and White also are intriguing options. Potentially another back-up PG this off-season to compete with Bev (although I love his energy/hustle) and a better back-up center if our current guys don't earn the spots. I really don't want Howard. CP3 would be awesome, but I have a hard time seeing him leaving Grif/Clips. Josh Smith fits well, but not at the MAX. I think Morey potentially works a trade for our 2nd star before he signs a FA.
If u get the chance to get a true superstar u pull the trigger. Borderline ones u can be more selective on depending on their strengths and your system. Who is to say that waiting a year would make us any closer to getting a getting the player we need? What if we waited and love and James don't want to come here. Personally I don't see James coming here and love is certainly not a givin either though it is possible. Who would we get the year after that if we were unsuccessful? Waiting has it's advantages but certainly has enough disadvantages that we need to be looking for best fit constantly.
Because Harden, Lin, Parsons, Dmo are too young. They are too inexperienced. You don't jump from near rookie status to contender in one or two years. Maybe 3 or 4. Look at the championship teams. They are led by vets. MJ won his first at 27 after many years of failure. Same with Kobe. Same with Shaq, Hakeem, Dirk, KG/Pierce, Lebron. Even when Duncan won, he was surrounded by vets. We are the opposite situation - a bunch of pups and you plug ONE vet in there? Not going to work. These kids need time to learn and get pressure tested, in that time, a Howard will decline. Wait a year and you increase our window that much.
Young superstar yes. But let's be honest - Harden was a gift. Teams don't give up 23 olds with superstar potential unless they are forced too. That won't happen in 2013.
