funny how they haven't been destroyed by the west's best all season.

does "UNDEFEATED" sound good? as in UNDEFEATED against the spurs, lakers, sacramento & utah.

really? well i guess i'll just pencil in the 76rs defensive squad and the spurs in the finals. not.

i'm willing to bet you'll see milwaukee v los angeles in the finals.

    ****************

you say you'd rather have someone you can count on in the playoffs. can you please give me a name or two or people who #1) are available, #2) are proven to be post season wrecking balls and #3) could REALISTICALLY come to houston this summer or next?

    i can't think of one.

the reason that there are no "proven post season studs" that will be leaving is because once you ARE a "proven post season stud", your team locks you up long term. what teams - like the rockets - end up doing is taking chances on players who have demonstrated ability and attitude in the regular season to carry their team(s), hoping they will develop into those postseason studs that you want.

    huh?

you're assuming that the 2nd round is as far as chris webber will ever go. what if rockets fans had said that about hakeem olajuwon in 84? 85? 86 regular season? how about chicago fans and michael jordan his first 6 years in the nba?

dude, i know what you're saying, and it makes perfect sense in hindsight. problem is, no one has the advantage of using "hindsight" in the present. in short, you ride with the horses that got you there. now, i'm willing to ride with a proven chris webber @ power forward over an unproven drafted power forward who might end up being sam bowie.

    [/b]

the only hype i detect is the hype that defense is the key ingredient to winning a championship. that's bs, and you can read my other thread for why i think so...

the real bottom line is that no one man, be it chris webber, iverson, etc. can win a championship on his own. it takes a team. and i think that if you take a close look at the teammates he has had, you'll find more hype...

Why does everyone insist we will sign Webber outright? I'm almost positive if we get him . .. it will be Sign and Trade
Which means the Cap hit will not be as high
So I think we can still sign Mooch and Picks
    maybe even more.

    I don't think Chris is a HeadCase.

I think we need to look at:
    1. What does Chris bring? improvement at th 4
someone that can abuse/cancel out the other 4s.

    2. What do we have? A D*MN GOOD BACK COURT

all the rockets work this off season is on the front line.

IMO the priorities are SF - C then PF
BUT the upgrade at PF is much better than
we can expect that the other two positions

    Webber can draw double teams
Webber is a low post presences
    Webber can rebound.
    Webber can pass
    Webber can spot up shoot

KT+Moe can do alot of these things but not
all on the court at the same time

I think in the Webber Debate
We need to look at the whole line up
and how it will improve with webber

    Also
    What else is out there?
If not Webber what? Give Hakeem his 10 Mil?
Could the Anti Webber fans please explain to me
If we don't go after webber. . . what should we do?

    Stay as is?
Go after someone else? who? Why?

I won't judge Webber based on his recent performance in the playoffs.

Webber hurt both ankles this season. He lost his conditioning. Is that all attributed to the sore ankles? Or did his state of mind have something to do with it? He was obviously extremely unhappy in Sacramento and finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel: "I resent that I was sent here."

I think if Webber signs here it will be because he can develop the same sort of extremely close friendship that Steve and Cat share. He knows he can play with the same main players for the next seven years or so. He would sign here because he would love showing up for work.

Do I think he's worth (approximately) 112 million dollars? Hell no. Who is? Do I think the combination of Steve/Cat and Webber will generate a lot of local and national interest? Maybe put us back into championship contention? Hell yes.

If CD can pull off something clever---and I think he can---to get a decent center and small forward to go along with the main trio, then all the better.

    Verse,

Man, I am really not the type of person to say, "I told you so", but I really am curious as to what you think of the offensive juggernaut Bucks now that their confidence is shaken and their shots have stopped falling.

You make some good points about Hakeem and Shaq in their early carreers, but I think...especially in Hakeem's case...that they exhibited a real competitive fire...a desire to get better and succeed. I just don't see that from Webber. I don't know, call it a gut reaction.

I mean, I guess we have to spend all of our cap money as soon as possible because it's generally not good to rest on your laurels in professional sports. But, man, I wish there was another option. If we have to get him, fine, I'll root along side everyone else...every bit as vehemently. But I just don't think that we will ever...once the initial thrill (ala Scottie Pippen) is gone...feel good about spending every cent we have on the Chris Webber paper lion.

But if that's what we do, so be it.

    Go C-Webb.....woohoo.

yep, and still put up these #s:

    FG: 42 - 100: 42%

    FT: 75%

    Rebounds: 12.8

    Assists: 3.8

    Points: 26.3

against the diesel. and mvp #s during the season, too.

    definition of ludicrous:

    comparing c webb to pippen.

pippen was always, always, always and complementary player. never was the man, except for 1 season. the rest of his career he was robin to batman.

c webb has always been batman. the caped crusader may have been unhappy, but he always produced. what he needs is robin and friends. i think he, cat, and steve are the trio to rule gotham city.

Verse (and anybody else who thinks that defense doesn't matter),

I have given my opinion on the matter of defense in previous posts. I have given my core reason (basis for my beliefs) in the table presented above.

I would like for the opposing side (Verse et al) to present the basis for their beliefs that defense doesn't matter in regards to winning championships. I have already heard your opinions about this, so spare me those. I wish to see provable facts to support your theories.

Playoff performance is so overrated. There are tons of guys who don't win for years in the playoffs, then explode.

Like Grant Hill's rep... what a load of crap. He's still in his 20's, and has never had THAT much talent beside him, and hasn't won a championship, so he's "not a winner." Hmm... Hakeem never got to the championship without Sampson until he was 33. It took Jordan years, and he had Pippen and Horace Grant when he finally made it. Hill never had htat supporting caste.

    Mango,

You know i am a Defense fan, so does this mean you think Vecsey is right with his quote

"And then there's C-Ya Webb defense, affectionately known around the league (and behind his back during stretches) as C-Webb's man do whatever he pleases."

I like C-Webb, but my gut feeling is his addition without the coupled addition of a Intimidating-Defending-Rebounding Big Fella, we will turn into a Phoenix and never get past the second round.

yea, haven, but webber's a loser.

we read this book in scottie pippen.

remember how dominant scottie was before he came here? how he put up mvp caliber #s? how he single handedly resurrected an entire franchise? then he came here and did a complete nosedive? yea, i do. he was a 30-10-9 man before he got here. then he just sucked.

ok he really did suck [IMG]

but c webb is no s pipp.

Another demonstration of how much offense/defense matters would be to see where championship teams over the last X number of years ranked in terms of (1) scoring and (2) defensive FG% (the best measurement of defense, since fewest points allowed can simply be a product of a slow-paced offense).

I know that the last two champions ranked #1 in defensive FG% (the Lakers last year, and the Spurs the year before).

I don't have time at the moment to run the numbers I've described, but the raw info is easily accessible at http://shell.rmi.net/~doug

    Happy calculating!

(P.S. In the current playoffs, one might note that there were three second-round matchups between high-flying offensive teams and outstanding defensive teams -- SA/Dallas, LA/Sacramento, and Charlotte/Milwaukee. Overall, the defenses have succeeded more often than not in throttling the offenses.)

I find it kind of funny that some folks think we shouldn't go after Webber just because he didn't have a stellar (for him) playoffs.

Let's compare Webber's Number in Round 2 vs MVP Iverson's numbers (games 1-4):

    Webber:
    26.5pts, 12.75reb,42%FG PCT,3.75ast

    Iverson:
    35.75pts,5.25reb,39.2% FG Pct, 5.25ast

Are you telling me that Iverson is an MVP and Webber has no heart? Looks to me like Iverson just shot the ball a whole lot more than Webber and he had the luxury of playing against Toronto instead of LA.

    Swopa,

I might give it a shot tomorrow, because I need to sign off and sleep.

    Smeg,

I know you like "D" and even with Shaq on the bench, the Kings couldn't stop the Lakers on Sunday. Unless the Rockets get a Sure Thing to do the grunt work, the Rockets + Webber are wasting time.

Some people claim that a legit Zone Defense will help the lesser defensive players stay on the court (equalize things). Won't Duncan and Shaq be even more effective on Defense since zones will be legal?

Wanna know what they are saying here in NYC?

Alot of the reporters and media personnel are reporting that they heard Webber constantly complain about how rough it was to guard Shaq and getting past him would put him against Duncan. Not an easy task JUST TO GET TO THE FINALS. Supposedly, he wants to head East (Knicks, of course) to at least hope to get to a final(s) in his career where at least there is a shot at a ring.

Now, of course this could be all a ploy because New York wants Webber. But I really don't think so. Alot of the fans on the radio are actually getting on the "anti-Webber" bandwagon because of his performance. And now with the resignation of the man who basically ran the Knicks for 10 years, the uncertainty is rampant at the MSG. I hear alot of callers stating that they rather sign Antonio Davis to play along Camby, then keep Latrell and Houston. I think that would be a better move, personally. They are also trying to land Payton. They really like what Kurt Thomas is bringing to the table. Trust me when I tell you that if enough fans call and say they don't want Webber, he won't be here.

That being said, I have no doubt that Webber is coming to our team. The hype is just too much for the Rocks to pass.

I would like 2 Antonio Davis types if possible to go with the backcourt. But, I am just a fan way out here so lets see what happens.

It is amazing how many people say this, yet proclaim that SF is our most pressing need. Like even Shawn Marion (the league's best intimidating SF, outright replacing Anthony Mason) helped push Phoenix over the top. NOT!

You guys are schizonphrenic about our needs. We will not target a new SF until we fix our interior intimidator problem, because Rudy and CD know that Cato sucks, and we need to replace him and add yet another big body...that's two PF/Cs we are short! vs a marginal need for a SF.

    Bet me!

    HP,

    Hypocrite my arse
The rockets desperatley need an upgrade at the Sf position and this will be done through the draft, well unless scientists find a way to combine Shandon's defense, Walt's scorign ability and Langhi's unique body size. How else will we upgrade the SF position.

They will be only one person losing their moniker and i will love to see you go around known as SmegsPartner.

Bring the bet on I'm in, so come all you whimps and set up t the plate, their are just to many speacial athletic SF in the draft for Rudy and CD to **** this up.

    Heypee,

Where are we going to find an intimidator in the draft that is going to be able to step in immediately and produce?

It takes any rookie longer to figure out how to defend and rebound in the NBA than to score. As Chuck always said, any knucklehead can score. I'd rather go for the most talented athlete available and hire an Antonio Davis or even Marc Jackson through FA. If that athlete is a small forward, great...we need one.

I think, from what I'm reading above, that New York is starting to get the right idea.

    Gascon & Mango:

i never said it doesn't matter.
i've always said it was overrated.

    big difference.

    re: bucks.

they played good "d". check the score. what faltered was their offense. once again, the overrated defense shows it's ugly head. they kept charlotte under 100 points. by anyone's stats, that's good d. their offense and rebounding yesterday, however, is another story.

    oh and mango,

i'll appease your stat fetish [IMG] sometime today, if i can continue to sneak from the evil boss....

    hold up Mango!!!!!

    i just realized something.

you're pointing out the all-defensive team 1st teamers for those teams and asking me to do the same. however, the nba does not have an "all offensive team". therefore, it's somewhat difficult for me to follow your format.

what i can do, however, is point out the offensive capabilities of that team/individual.

    would that suffice?

    p.s.

i would appreciate a response to my earlier question about the 76ers being a worse team when they added all defense mutombo....
