Well, you just need to get a little less sensitive then. Go put on a skirt.

DaDakota, I'm sure you're OK with the term n***** then?

    Yeah, you dumb crackers!!

    :p

The African-American man is right, but that doesn't make those individuals any less ignorant for doing so.

OT - Another Brother, do you ever perform in Austin? I'd like to come see you perform sometime if you do.

You know another brother, it's like calling you that "funny black man". "He's so funny, just like that other funny black man, Chris something. You know the one that whines a lot in that movie with that Chinaman?"

I don't know who you are, but it sounds like I already made a impression of you, doesn't it? It's just demeaning to certain people while other people might have other bigger issues to deal with....

Your impression of me is based on what?

A Chris Tucker parallel? People call me a funny black man all the time, and it's doesn't bother me at all. So thanks for reestablishing my point.
You or no one other than me has walked in my shoes therefore you have no idea what I deem offensive.

On the other hand, I didn't question the validity of Asians and their problem with the word, I merely thought the framework of the complaint was too extreme.

Any more impressions, oh invisible one?

I think he was joking gr8-1, but I admit that that reads bad for me too. It would be a pretty out of character comment for him to make if he was serious though.

Since the mountain formerly named Chinaman’s Peak in an hour’s drive from my house, I might as well fill in some of the details. The name was considered offensive and was changed several years ago to Ha Ling Peak, the name of the man who is said to have climbed it, although there is some uncertainly about this.

    http://www.peakfinder.com/peakfinder.ASP?PeakName=Ha+Ling+Peak

I assume that he climbed the back:

but you can also climb the face:

    :eek::eek:

(Those are roads and trees at the bottom, btw. Not a recommended activity for those who are afraid of heights. ;))

this is really off on a tangent, but wouldn't gook be used to refer to koreans? as in Korean the countries name is Hangook or Dae Han Min Gook. It actually took me by surprise because I'd always known that term was derogetory, and then I'm watching all these world cup games with south korean fans carrying giant banners saying "Dae Han Min Gook"

Obviously the NinjaPimp was reaaaally bored..or this was looked for because of a similiar question brought up in GARM the other day.

for the record...I cant believe that AB caught flack for this one..he just wanted to know an answer to a perfectly reasonable question. Not everyone knows for sure what is offensive to others.
    We only learn by asking.

The term G**k has innocent beginnings, in the Korean war when South Koreans were trying to seek refuge in America, they would ask American soldiers to take them to Megook. Megook is the Korean word for America. GI's were understandable confused, hearing megook think me, gook or I am a g**k. That's how that slang got started.
All I can tell you is when someone says G**k or Ch**c towards my wife that would be the equivalent of me saying N***er to a black person. Needless to say when that happens, it's on like donkey kong and somebody is gonna get their ass whooped.

I asked my friend this morning and he told me that it is offensive. But he also told me that AB is a comedian, and that some people should just lighten up. I will keep calling my friend the 'C' word, 'G' word......only because that sumbitch will keep calling me spic.:D

Man, 3 pages before I even found the thread. I feel like I'm too late for the party. But, I'll give you my much belated opinion anyway. It seems to me that "Chinaman" is in much the same position as words like "negro" or "colored" -- words that were once common and considered acceptable but are no longer so. So, I'd say that calling the Chinese "Chinaman" is less offensive than calling them "chinks", just as calling a black man a "negro" is less offensive than calling him a "******." But none of them are acceptable today. Apparently, calling the French "frogs" is still ok though (right T_J?). Apologies all around for the liberal use of racial slurs; I'm trusting the censor-software to take care of the worst of them (I hope it comes through because I can't edit!).

There seems to be a lot of posts in here that I didn't feel like reading (typical), but my personal experience with 'racism' comes from moving to Alabama. No, it's not bad at all, but I had my opinions when I first arrived 5 years ago.

My first day of school in 'bama (private preppy 'hick', 99% white K-12) some person comes up to me and says 'I hunt N******'.

Well yeah that kind of shocked me. And then, when he found out I was Jewish.....lol

Man, I had swastikas written all over my stuff, was called Kyke this, Jew that. Ahh what a fantastic experience.

I took offense to it until maybe 3 years ago when I realized they weren't making fun of my religion, but mainly seeing how I would react. Now 'Jew' is pretty much what I go by and I turned out KO.

Now to the topic of China***; I guess I don't see what's wrong with it when worded. I know the origins of it and know it's offensive. I guess I would just see it as 'Jew' (as in 'Man, I Jewed that guy for a great price') instead of, say, 'Wandering Jew'.

I mean I call my Italian friend a dago, guido, goomba, guinea, wog, and wop and he doesn't seem to mind.
