Was today the 1st game of the season?
There are 162 games in the season, right?

Just curious, wasn't sure. Since I'm very unfamiliar with baseball, I figured that I'd just check on here to find out. So, I was assuming after reading the comments that I must have missed something and we must be close to 1/2 way through the season.

Those of you who know baseball, please correct me if I'm wrong- it IS the first game of the season, right? And there ARE 161 left in the Major Baseball League? Thanks in advance.

Thats true but we did miss out last year by only 1 1/2 games. So a game like this could definately make a difference.

Yep, the new math if your first game of the season is bad why even bother playing the rest of the games. Good god!

According to Garner: "Sometimes he'll give up 4 in one game, and then save 30 straight."

He had this very yeah-this-happens-but-I've-never-been-more-confident-in-him approach to his comments after the game.

It didn't sound like "Lidge sucks" had ever crossed his mind in his evaluation. It sounded like Garner had another two seasons worth of patience/"faith" with Lidge as the closer and his go-to pitcher in pressure situations..

Garner's a "gut feeling" manager.. and this all looks like an 'I believe in miracles' blindly emotional based decision. That he just believes Lidge is going to turn it around any day now, and return to his former glory aslong as he keeps using him in the 9th without sway or doubt, season after season, until he finally turns it around or he loses his job.

Yeah, the time has come but, I really want the guy to do well. I want to him to become lights out again, and think he will, BUT he is running out of time

Why don't they just send him down to the minors to save some games there? Let him run off 8-10 straight saves there, work out his mechanics issues, and try to dominate again. Granted it is the minors, however doing well there may bring his confidence back

LOL I was waiting for someone to say something like this.... Of course it's 1st game of the season but it's not like his troubles just started yesterday... They started before the first game of LAST season ... Do you not remember earlier last season when Lidge struggled people were saying the same thing??? And half the people on this board were saying give him a chance blah blah blah.. Well how many chances do we give this guy? We have given him more then 1 Full season and two Spring Trainings and 2 vacations to work on his game.... Please get rid of Carr woops I meant Lidge :D

I'll say this....he needs to be on a VERY short leash.

I dont know about the rest of you guys, but i was watching that last inning as if I was expecting something like that to happen....and frankly, they almost scored again and ended it in regulation.

I think he needs a new home, fresh start or whatever....but this isnt a one time thing...its getting old. That wasnt Albert Pujols....or even Hunter Pence....it was Xavier freakin Nady.

What is also getting old is his "i felt good...i made a good pitch....im ok" postgame rant. What the hell else is he gonna say??? You think he is going to say "well, i think my head is basically mush...and i have no idea how get a tough out anymore." ?????

I can picture Roger's face watching that last night and him having major Deja Vu.

Makes you really appreciate how friggin unbelievable Mariano Rivera really is....that he is still able to mow guys down

He has more than 2 pitches, and more importantly movement on his fastball.

Lidge's fastball looks a lot like Astacio's these days !

but even more than that is the fact that Mariano threw the ball away on a pickoff attempt into CF and then gave up a WS winning blooper in Game 7.....and he has never looked back. It takes a special make up to be a closer for longer than a couple seasons.

seriously...and that damn slider has been up way too often for the last 2 1/2 years. Though I'm stlil gonna advocate Lidge closing games a bit longer.. but yeah, 96-98 mph has come down to 92-94.. and the slider has come up..

read through this thread and tell me it doesn't sound just like the stupid-ass threads in the GARM the day after the Rockets lost their first game of the season.

i love posts about what trends will be in the season based on the first game...particularly in baseball where they play 162 of them. "this team better score 5-6 runs a game to win!!"

    good show, hoopsters.
