Wow, two of the best fighters in featherweights/bantamweights suffer heartbreaking defeats. First, Donaire lost and now Mares got KO'ed. It looks like Rigondeaux is the #1 fighter in that division.
Haha, man, I told the wife and friends, I'm watching boxing tonight (last night obviously), so we were chillin' in the living room. They were chatting it up, and this happened. You know how it goes, I did my best Roy Jones Jr. impersonation, "OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH!" Wife says, "could you be any louder?" Me, "Yes, yes I can. And I know you aren't saying I'm loud." (She's a loud talker haha) You know watching it live, I thought it was a good stoppage, but after watching the replay, in which Mares was getting rocked, I saw he was still throwing some semi-meaningful punches. The fan in me wanted to keep watching more, but yeah...good stoppage.
You know, that's what GB/TR get for not coming together and getting that fight done. Now, their two biggest draws at that division both suffer major defeats. One gets stopped, the other gets schooled for 12 rds. Really like Mares though. You have to respect a guy that isnt afraid to go down swinging. Might not be the best strategy but it sure is nice to watch. You know, I loved what Mares said after the fight. He said he wasn't here to get an amazing record and stay undefeated. He wants to fight the best and the toughest fights. That my friends, is what boxing is all about.
Seems like the most logical step from here though. Next Golovkin fight has been set for Nov 2nd. Still hoping for a Martinez fight next year.
