bloop, you dont have to be a guard to be a play creator. A play creator is a player who can create for others. Hakeem, shaq, moses, ewing, duncan, were play creators. The team threw the ball to them and they created a shot for themselves or a teammate. Yes the 20-10 looks nice, but there are alot of games when yao let his lack of offensive output bother other elements of his game. More times than not, a low scoring game by yao is coupled with a low rebound and lack of blocks and that shouldnt happen with a center. In the playoffs against physicality, he hasnt been as good. The playoffs are when you're suppose to play your best ball. The last playoffs, he was up and down and that shouldnt be the case. All players have strong/weak points and yao is no different. This team as constructed need yao the defender more than they need yao the offensive player I highly doubt we will see the old offense when they tried every which way to get yao the ball and start from there. He will spend alot of time at the elbow and off the blocks.
This was my biggest beef with Yao. Duncan might have a ten point night and shoot 3/13 from the floor but he probably backed that up with 16 rebounds and five blocks. Yao has a 3/13 night and you can expect 6 rebounds and one block to go with it. Not acceptable.
So apparently a guy like Pau Gasol who made the Lakers into contenders is just a role player? LOL if Pau Gasol is a role player then I don't know what Yao is. Like I said, only rabid Yao fans will argue Yao Ming is the better player, and only rabid yao ming fans will pick Yao over Gasol objectively (without Rocket loyalty getting into it). Thank you for just proving my point. Even if its healed there's bound to be effects. Its extremely rare that an athlete who suffers a major injury gets back to 100%, guys who come back are usually a step slow. STAT lost that beyond amazing quickness he had, he just became above average even though his injury had already "healed". Was Grant Hill still MJ-lite when he "recovered" from his injury? How about Antonio Mcdyes? The assumption most people have is he'll be back to his 20-10 days just because his foot has been proclaimed as "healed". What I'm saying is expect Yao's performance to be worse this year, and its not just based on assumptions, its based on past history of players who recover from major injuries, especially in the year they recovered. LOL indeed, next time you're arguing with someone you might want to double-check you're quoting the right person. I never said anything about 25%, and as I said I expect Yao to be a major part of our team, just that Scola and co. will be taking larger parts of the offense and we won't be relying on Yao like what happened with Hakeem.
To be fair to Yao Ming, part of his performance belong in the intangibles department. Although his rebs are low, his battling for position allows our pf to get rebs more easily. Not only that most of the work he does on defense doesn't show in the stats. My only problem with him is that people automatically assume that all-star level production from him despite his nth injury. That's just not realistic. IMHO he can be the best overall player on a championship team ala Billups, however he won't be overwhelmingly better than his teammates like LBJ on the cavs.
As said, no one really knows. Looking at Z, a full recovery is possible, but Yao is not Z and there is no guarantee that Yao will be able to move on the foot the way Z could. Nor was Z ever as good as Yao is/was. Personally, I'm hoping to see some decent help defense and flashes of offensive dominance from Yao. If he gets 12 and 6 in 20 minutes, I'll be happy. Boost him up to 30 in the playoffs. I see Yao as somewhat of an all or none guy. His skills aren't tied that much to athleticism, but on effort. In other words, if he has the athleticism to be on the court, then he'll be at his best...there's not much in between. If Yao gets another foot injury though, I think he'll be done. Personally, I can accept whatever happens...accept if we were to sign him to a big contract that is way over his value....whatever his value might me.
Ouch, check your logic bud. If the top 5 players were all SGs and SFs, how would they all make the All NBA 1st team?
By my logic and the nba, all nba first teamer are the 5 best at their positions. If he were top 5,he would have been the center unless there was a better center, right. If he wouldve been top, he would probably finish top 5 in mvp votes also, correct? Its not to say yao isnt a good basketball player,he is,just not elite level regardless of the injuries
Roslolian, I totally agree with you on this... There is no guarantee with Yao at this point and it just kills me that people have him in the starting line-up and All-star game without knowing if the man can actually even run up and down the court. I said this last season and I will say it again.. This is like deja vu with Bill Walton and Andrew Toney. I wish Yao the best and I hope he recovers, but I still don't think he will be even close the player he once was. There's one thing to shoot set shots and there another thing to shoot and play doing real time game situations. T_Man.
Thanks Pryuen, I think we all forgot about Yao Ming with all this Carmelo talk.. No. nobody forgot about him dude. He hasn't played since the last time Brett Favre retired and we can speculate all day if he's going to be good or not. 'hey don't forget about Yao' isn't really news about Yao.
This posting really brought out the leading Yao Ming Haters! Didn't it? So I thought I would straighten out all the warped minds and ask kindly for fresh open thinking. Remember, firstly,we are Houston Rockets fans . Secondly, we should support our team & it's players as much as possible. Thirdly, we need to be fully aware of the Yao Ming possibilities:- a) Yao Ming may never fully recover. b) Yao Ming may eventually recover & regain his status. c) Yao Ming may recover, then have a career ending injury. BROTHERS and SISTERS WE JUST DON'T KNOW. So all the guessing is only guessing, on both sides of the coin I hope everyone will take a deep breath and patiently await the return of Yao Ming, giving him the chance to find his level, what ever it might be.
I really hope Yao can get back to the player he once was but I really don't see that happened. Two reasons. 1 When he was healthy it was kind of hard for him to avg. 20-10 the 20 points wasn't that hard for him but the 10 rebs. always seen pretty tough because Yao wasn't a great rebounder. Now that he's coming back from being injury it will be even tougher. 2 Yao won't be seeing a lot of playing time like he use to. I see Yao playing around 25-30 mins. which I don't think will be enough time for Yao to avg. 20-10.
Yaos came back to elite form 2 dif. Times from very serious injuries. I think there is know reason that atleast by allstar break when he is conditioned with his stamina. That he will be able to play 30 min a game and if u look at yao mpg in his career you will see that he only played about 33 mpg. Yaos game does not depend on athletic ability so if his stamina is good and he can run up and down the court he will be the same yao we know frankly I think its crazy to not think that too imo.
