The best shot is the one not taken (for Rafer, anyway)

I agree with everything in the OP, this trade makes us a better team RIGHT NOW. Even if slightly better, it makes us better and who knows how good Lowry can become with the right teacher.

Exactly. The whole "our season just got sold" talk is preposterous on every level. I doubt we'll be any worse off in the short-term, let alone the long-term.

    great post...

as much as we have to appreciate Rafer for what he has done...

as other said he wasnt starter material...

do you really think a GM for another team... was going to not know what we already knew?

    with all due respect....Rafer sucked...

we were not going to get a CP3 or a Deron Williams type player... in return without giving up more talent...

He may be a bad shooter, but he fought every night. We should appreciate his efforts, shouldn't we?

Sure. I don't have anything against Rafer personally. Appreciate away.

Heck, I appreciated Ryan Bowen's efforts. But that doesn't mean I'd be happy with Bowen as a major part of my rotation.

I can actually see Cook will be on the court situationally by camping in the 3pt line and freeing up the paint. Oh my I kinda like that, a shooting big man.

I seem to recall a lot of people who thought Cook would fit in well here back in his Laker days. Don't know why that changed all of a sudden... he's still the same player, from everything I've seen.

Good Stuff. The free throw difference is disturbing. Rafer hardly gets to the line.

    Great post.

It's a shame that threads like these are actually rare following trade of FREAKING RAFER ALSTON!!!!

I mean, just think about it. No more Rafer's teardrops. No more transition bricks from the 3 point line. No more of scrub PG shooting more than the best center in the game.

At least Lowry knows his game. He sucks at shooting 3s so he doesn't shoot them. He can hit the midrange/long 2 at a decent clip. So we don't really have to worry too much about spreading the floor.

When the "search" capability is back, I really want to do a search for "bag of chips." Because that's what I remember people saying Rafer's value was, over and over and over... and now that he's finally gone, you'd think we'd traded away Lebron James for all the crying about it.

Actually, Shane Battier is the best at passing the ball to Yao in the post....so your argument falls apart already.

Some classics from old threads below:

...so we have a consensus value of "bag of chips." And then everyone cries that we traded him for Lowry and Cook. Wow.

Actually, I wonder if these deserve their own thread... hmmm...

Well.. Rafer averaged 11 shots a game this season...

Yao averages 13. So... now with Tmac and Rafer out, expect more touches to Yao and expect Yao to bump his scoring average up by 6 points

Holy crud, I never realized how many bricks Reefer was putting up. My god, good luck to the magic, cause the opposing teams will guarantee leave him open everytime.

5 Star Post....easily one of the best of the year...

Good number of people before the season and when we were healthy, specifically said these would be the reason that this team wouldn't be able to get to the championship...

    Reasons being:

    - Injuries, healthy, and more injuries

    - Lack of Chemistry or not enough bballs to go around

    - Lack of a consistent, viable point guard

    - Tougher teams in the Western Playoff picture

I liked Rafer, but how could his trade be the reason we can't move further in playoffs...when he was one of reasons, people often pointed to in the first place of us being less successful for a lack of decent, pass-first (or aggressive to the basket) point guard.

I believe we aren't as bad off, because of our coach and his system. Which really isn't based on having a high-assists number point guard. It is more based on team passing and assist than just a point guard collecting a big fraction of them.

    Yes, precisely.

Tonight's game against the Mavs embodies what I was saying in point #7. Brooks WILL make mistakes, but when he's not making mistakes, he's attacking and creating points. What's more, Lowry's the same way: attack, attack, attack, and attack some more. Our PG tandem will wear down and frustrate opposing defenses throughout the game. Rafer can't do that for us. This trade makes us a better team NOW. TODAY.

I wish Rafer well, and I'm sure he'll perform better with the Magic than he did here. But just because he performs better with another team does NOT mean he would've improved had we kept him. Rafer is what he is, and Brooks/Lowry are only getting better.
