I forgot that one on my list. The last 20 minutes are about as good as a movie can possibly get with great the directing and score. Have you seen Once upon a time in the West yet? Its a lesser known Leone western that is almost as good and the new DVD makes it look like it was made yesterday. Das Boot, which Summer Song listed is also easily up there. Its very intense and probally the best war movie ever made.
lol, You beat me too it while i was writing my post. As far as IMDB goes i find the list to be farily accurate except for movies that have a lot of hype behind them like the LOTR. They are good movies but not some of the best ever. There are many lesser known movies in the top 50 that are badass.
I'd have to go with the Godfather Part II. It has an awesome story with many layers, awsome acting (screw Goodfellas, this is where DeNiro proves what a great actor he is) and some of the most beautifully filmed scenes in cinema history (the parade in Little Italy is both realistic and surrealistic at the same time). I understand the affection for the story of the Shawshank Redemption, but it does not even come close to the depth and visual beauty of the best films.
Off the top of my head: Pulp Fiction High Fidelity The Killing The Big Lebowski Dr. Strangelove The Godfather The Godfather II Dog Day Afternoon Serpico The Sting American Beauty Rushmore Wonder Boys
Just did some reading about Das Boot. There are three versions.... 1) Original German Mini-series (6 parts, 6 hours long). 2) Theatrical Release (120 minutes). 3) The Director's Cut DVD (209 minutes). Most say (amazon.com) that the 6 hour one is the best. But it's hard to find. Stay away from the Theatrical release. The DVD Directors cut is pretty good. But as you can see, it does have a lot missing the film. If you can, get the German version w/English subtitles. The English Dubbed version takes away from the film.
Supposedly you can find the 6 hr version on VHS but i have never seen it. The directors cut DVD is really great and has the German audio track (Its definatly better in german w/ subs). They remastered the picture and added a 5.1 DD soundtrack which really adds to the intensity of the movie. If you are into home theater there is a superbit version of the directors cut that is available that likely has an even better audio and video.
Never seen it... don't care to... so, "no." SW: Original Trilogy - sci-fi - story line / all from "scratch" Indiana Jones Trilogy - family friendly (enough) action adventure Finding Nemo - best animation / cgi 2001: A Space Oddyssey - breakthrough for special effects Sound of Music - musical / photography Schindler's List - blunt realism and true story Saving Private Ryan - best D-day movie ever Gladiator - reinvented / reintroduced the "epic" to movies have more....
How come the spaghetti westerns, particularly the Leone ones, are listed by their italian names on IMDB? Are they technically Italian cinema. Forget it, I just looked up the release dates and Fistful of Dollars didn't open up until like 2 years later in the US.
Some excellent picks so far. Field of Dreams The Hunt for Red October Pulp Fiction Shawshank Redemption Last of the Mohicans? Great action sequence at the end. How about most underrated movie of all time? Don't laugh, but Babe 2 Pig in the City. Save for one ridiculous scene halfway into the movie it really was a beautiful movie. Sad that no one saw it.
So no one mentioned citizen kane? Anyways here's my list American: Matrix (forget the sequels, this is one of the finest movies ever made) Fight Club Rounders Oceans 11 Waking Life Excalibur Jurassic Park Aladdin Emeperor's New Groove American Pie Young Frankenstein Interview with the Vampire The usual suspects English Snatch The Ali G movie Bend it Like Beckham French Amelie Chinese Once upon a Time in China (1-3) Infernal Affairs (1-3) Hero Being with You Japanese Battle Royal Icchi the Killer
Jurassic Park Matrix: Reloaded Return of the King Godfather I Ferris Bueller's Day Off The Great Outdoors The Burbs Star Wars IV-VI Saving Private Ryan Terminator II Field of Dreams is really good. am i the only one who almost cries when James Earl Jones gives his "baseball is the one constant" speech towards the end? i don't even cry during movies, but that always gets to me for some reason. oh, and then him and his dad playing catch, that also almost makes me cry.
That is a cartoon movie, right? Are you being serious about that one? RM95, I am impressed that you like "The Killing" - along with "Barry Lyndon", it was one of Kubrick's most underrated movies.
You missed Aladdin And yes I am serious about both of these movies. Disney has been able to turn very high quality animated musicals that are much more sophisticated than their "intended audience". Most of the jokes/situations in there you wont even get unless you're like 18. When I watch movies, I like to be open minded. That's why you see my list containing things from independent pictures or foreign films most in the states never even heard of: Rules of Attraction, Amelie (was oscar nominated though I think), Infernal Affairs, Battle Royale, Waking Life, and Bend it like Beckham. Mixed with personal favorites that most wouldn't name: Disney movies, Excalibur, and American Pie. Along with some that most people can accept as favorite movies. On a side note, I wouldn't recommend Battle Royale or Icchi the killer to a group that would watch Emperor's new groove. Infact I wouldn't even recommend Icchi the Killer to anybody. I think the only reason I liked it was because I view the over the top violence as comedy (maybe I'm a little twisted). It's got pretty good cinematography but this movie would make Kill Bill look G rated. I remeber when watching the movie, I was either laughing my but off at the over topness or cringing in a fetal position think how can someone enjoy a movie this sick.
I guess it's sad but of the top 25 I have not seen: Casablanca, Schindler's List , Shichinin no samurai, Citizen Kane, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Dr. Strangelove, Rear Window, The Usual Suspects, Doc Hollywood, Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, Psycho, Lawrence of Arabia, or Il Buono, il brutto, il cattivo. As I continue down the list it gets worse. I bet I haven't seen half of them. When you say best movie of all time what does it mean to you? To me it is very personal and means 'what movie did I find the most entertaining and joyous to watch'. I would have to say that the lotr trilogy is up there. It was simply amazing to watch and soak in.
Oh man I just took a look at the worst movies of all time (the bottom 100) and I have seen almost ALL of them1 Is my taste that bad? The worst, and I mean worst, movie on that list is number 3, Space Mutiny. I saw a Mystery Science Theatre 3000 where they covered this abortion and it is among the funniest thing I have ever seen. If you have not seen this movie, SEE IT. It is a fuggin' RIOT! Chance
