Any band led by Miles Davis Beatles weren't half-bad either Led Zepellin had their moments U2 doesn't totally suck If their namesake wasn't such a tool, DMB might be in the top 100,000.
Chronological (more or less) Greatness: Chuck Berry Elvis THE BEATLES The Kinks The Rolling Stones THE WHO Clapton Hendrix Led Zep Stevie Wonder Springsteen Villiage People (just kidding) The Police SRV REM U2
Whoa there dude, You think All That You Can't Leave Behind is U2's best album? What about the Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby? They need to make more albums like those. They are ground breaking and completely original. ATYCLB was a great album, but it just doesn't belong in the same category as JT and AB. They're working on something new now, I hope they don't get lazy and just make a sequel to ATYCLB because Electrical Storm sounded like it could easily fit on that album. That to me is the mark of a great band, the ability to be innovative and U2 has always done that and hopefully they will continue.
Booker T & The MG's should get a mention in here. They were the house band for Stax records and Steve Cropper and Bookert T. Jones wrote some of the most enduring soul music of the era (which is saying something). They also did session work for Atlantic Records and at the famous studio in Muscle Shoals, AL. They could lock on a groove like no other. I saw them back up Neil Young a few years ago and it was one of the great concerts I ever saw. Another really underated band that deserves more exposure and repect are the Meters. The Meters are the quintessential New Orleans funk band. In the mid-60s Art Neville had a band called the Neville Sound, which featured other Nevilles, too. But somehow the other Nevilles left and Art Neville, George Porter, Zig Modeliste, & Leo Nocentelli became the Meters. They played clubs and did studio work for producer Allen Tousaint, as well. A monumentally great band.
Never cared much for British bands even when I was younger. Most of them were crap live which is the real test for me. 1) The Allman Brothers Band. 2) The Motown Records rhythm section when James Jamerson was on bass. 3) James Brown's band when Clyde Stubblefield was drumming. 4) Doobie Brothers w/ Michael McDonald. Honorable Mention Bruce Hornsby Bonnie Raitt Steely Dan
How about best album cover? I vote for mine! chance OK, I'll admit, I should have put more thought into it than burying my feet behind my house but what can I say? I was getting a sprinkler system put in and you just don't pass up opportunities like that.
Chance, Thought it was funny so I will share.... Speaking of yours, I am not sure if this is the ultimate compliment or if you should be ashamed, but the "Yao Ming - - - " craze has soared to new heights... or maybe lows! Today I could not help but to burst out in laughter. I went into the men's room and some one was whistling the Yao Ming tune. Damn, you have made it big now.
My vote goes to... The Beatles. I like few other individual albums and songs more than my favorite Beatles CD(Abbey Road) and song(Yesterday, which never gets old), but all in all, I don't think anyone compares.
Great calls. Cropper is my guitar hero, I like and listen to other guitarists more than him, but he is who I try to sound like and play like, above any other axe-men/women out there. And the Meters, awesome stuff. A band at the jazz club I frequent here in Chi (Green Mill) covers "Cissy Strut" regularly. I got to meet George Porter last month, and he was a great guy. It should also be noted that they played on Robert Palmer's classic "Sneaking Sally Through the Alley."
Dave Mathews band is so awesome because like...I don't know music at all....like they are so cool. Like Dave Mathews speaks to me....like other bands aren't playing now so they could never be as good as my favorites. Like. If I hear one more thing about dave mathews I will go off. Dave Mathews will be like vanilla ice soon, forgotten. Look at something bigger than a band that has said nothing for your best choice. I'd tell you my best band ever, but I'm to afraid our beloved DMB fans will blast me for my reasoning. Like...oh my god!
LOL Oh, by the way... The Beatles. No other band is as consistently commercially successful, musically innovative, and popular across several generations.
