I'm really surprised that more people have not mentioned Pet Sounds. You guys do know that Sgt Pepper's by the Beatles was their response to Pet Sounds. PS was and still is a very innovative album.
By any other metric but Clutchfans, Siamese Dream wouldn't even be on the radar. Strange really, must be a specific demographic.
Indeed. Given that I'm surprised not a single mention of Nine Inch Nails. I figured someone would vote for The downward spiral.
Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain Beatles - Revolver Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Echo & the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain Gram Parsons - Grievous Angel Beach Boys - Pet Sounds Nirvana - Nevermind Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin Radiohead - OK Computer Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground
side two of joshua tree is one of the greatest things ever committed to record. definitely U2's finest moment. white people in their 30's? i like siamese dream, but personally i think gish is the superior record.
Sorry, I don't think I read the rules. Gram Parsons - Grievous Angel- 5 Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain- 4 Echo & the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain - 3 Beatles - Revolver- 2 Bob Dylan - Highway 61 - 1
Even Rolling Stones gave Siamese Dream love when they made their top 500 CDs of all time. Gish is a great record, I love the sound, but Siamese Dream is just amazing from start to finish. The worse song is Sweet Sweet which is still a great song. Aside from that any of it's songs would have been a top hit if they were released as singles; Hummer Mayonaise-(in my opinion greatest Pumpkins song) Silver**** Spaceboy Soma.
You know, one of the interesting things about all this, and a previous poster or two touched on it, is that albums created by the artists should be taken as a whole pill, and that means the specific songs in the specific order that they were placed in the original album. Someone mentioned Pet Sounds, and yes, Sgt. Pepper came out after it, but was not really a 'response' as much as it just happened to be in production when Pet Sounds was released. It definitely did influence the Beatles to really kind of let loose and maybe go a little further with the creative juices than perhaps otherwise, but Sgt. Pepper was going to come out pretty much the way it did, whether Pet Sounds came out or not. That said, Pet Sounds could therefore be considered one of the most 'influential' albums, but it is hardly mentioned among lists of 'greatest' albums. But Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band always is, and rightly so. It is not even just the songs (the only one of which I don't particularly care for is 'She's Leaving Home'), which are all of them, every last one, masterful. It is simply the album taken as a whole; somehow, the entire album as a whole is just magical - listening to one song automatically causes you to be in ready anticipation for the next one. What I find interesting about everyone's lists here is how many different Beatles albums are in peoples' Top 5. All of the Beatles albums have something really good to offer, some more than others, but for me, nothing can top Sgt. Pepper. It truly was the 'sweet spot' for them as a group, after the cheesy cover-band beginnings, and before the drugs and loathing for each other crippled their abilities later on. Someone else mentioned '1', and that CD is actually a very good thing, and a great way to 'get into' the Beatles, as well as a good way to kind of follow their growth and progress over the years. And also 'Love' is kind of an interesting and entertaining CD as well, just because it was done so well, and it definitely shakes things up and presents familiar things in a totally new way. It' clear that making lists like this says at least as much about the musical tastes of the poster as it does about the albums in question, but that's ok, it's fun. Having said that, and taking the poll literally to mean 'what do I think are the *greatest* albums - not necessarily the 'most popular' - that leads to my list.. whee. 5 - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles 4 - Dangerous - Michael Jackson (I know, I know, how can this be ahead of Thriller?? Well, Thriller is definitely great, but Dangerous came along when MJ was at his peak, and I think it is a superior album, that's all.. no disrespect to Thriller) 3 - The Wall - Pink Floyd 2 - MCMXC A.D. - Enigma 1 (a tie, I can't choose here!!) 1/A - Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel 1/B - Graceland - Paul Simon (Both of these albums are greatness in their own way and I honestly can't choose between them.. S&G were a HUG influence, and their songs have stood the test of time like few others, and Graceland as an album is just sublime from beginning to end) Fun idea, fun lists Dan!
If her CD is called Friday, and you want to assign 5 points to that as your favorite, it will go on the list, as the list will always go down to 5 so that one recording from each person's list is represented.
