It's interesting how a lot of the advice people are citing are from their dads and it makes me wonder how many of them listened to that advice when they were younger. As I get older I find that I understand a lot more what my dad was telling me when I was a kid and wish that I hadn't been such a dumb self-absorbed kid so his advice could've helped me earlier.

Here are somethings that he said that I find now to be very helpful. You have to work hard and be disciplined in life because you can't always count on luck. When luck does present itself you should be prepared to take advantage of it ("Success" is when preparation meets opportunity). You should always be able to plan a few moves ahead no matter what you do.

In addition to my dad though I have gotten some great advice from some other sources particularly from Martial Arts. Martial Arts isn't about mastering your opponent, your weapon or your art but about mastering yourself. The highest level of success in martial arts is where your actions become unthinking and are appropriate to the circumstance. In my club we call this getting rid of "too many mind" and what it means is that you have to train yourself to the point where when the opening presents itself you can execute the technique without conscious thoughts of the individual action. This would be like being able to hit a 94 MPH fastball since if you had to think about each motion of your body to swing an put the ball into play it would be too late. This is also what is meant by Zen, and in a Zen state all actions are done that way.

Buddhism has taught me that moderation in all things is good and that regret is an illusion that causes suffering. Also that we should embrace both the good and bad in life and look for the possibility of both in all beings.

Professionally one of my first bosses told me to "Never get sued and never trust contractors." which I find more true as my career advances.

Finally the best advice I got from friends was "Womens is evil".
